Another story! Well, okay, it's not really a story at the moment, since this is only a brief prologue, but it's an entertaining prologue!.. I think...
Caneden. The City of Magic.
That title's a bit of an underestimation, if you ask me. City of the Supernatural would work better. Of course, if you wanted a really accurate title, you'd call it 'City of the Creatures-That-Would-Like-To-Rip-Your-Face-Off-And-Feast-On-Your-Entrails'. Admittedly, it doesn't quite have the same sort of ring as 'City of Magic' does, but that's life.
Of course, being the sensible, level-headed folks I know you all are, you obviously know there's no such thing as magic or monsters and that horrific face spying on you through the window is probably just someone in a Halloween costume.
Who somehow managed to climb to the 5th floor of your apartment complex.
Whether you like it or not, there are always going to be things in this world that you cannot explain properly. I'm sure you've had a couple of these things happen to you. Bumps in the night. Things moving around. That streak of shadow dashing past a window, on a cold, dark night. Not long ago, I was almost hit by a car which had no driver. Now, I'm certain you've already rationalised these events in your mind and attributed them to things like animals or boilers or the house cooling down, or some crap like that.
Well, chances are that you're completely wrong about most of them. I mean seriously? The house cooling down? Who would buy something like that?
Anyway, my point is that if you took a couple of seconds to think things through, and I mean really think things through, you'd see that there's a lot more to this world than rational, completely explainable events.
No place demonstrates that better than Caneden.
Sure, to any unassuming eyes, this city may seem no different than any others. Shops, attractions, crowds, crime, filth, violence and all the rest. However, if you know what you're looking for, you'll be able to find what makes this city really special.
You see, Caneden is a city of magic and anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see it.
This is a city where immortals, demon men, wizards, vampires (and those who hunt them), mage hitmen, meglomaniacal crime bosses, sly police detectives and competent taxi drivers, all live their (mostly) full lives. A city where even Death himself has been known to walk the streets... You could look upon any street on this city and find at least 2/3 interesting stories to be told. Admittedly, most of them end on some sort of variation of 'Then the monster ate him', but that's life.
But this isn't about the poor fools who accidentally encroach on Goblin territory, or who decide to visit a Vampire's house or those who carelessly handle high explosives (although those are always my favourites). These are stories about the bigger players in this city and how they desperately attempt to extend what little life, or sanity, they have left. Fun times for all.
And why not? After all, this is a city where the unexplained happens everyday. Where metaphorical and literal giants constantly fight for control through mind games and, sometimes, a really good beating. Where even Death isn't the top player around...
This is Caneden.
As for my humble self? Well, I suppose you can just call me 'The Narrator'.
