Chapter 10 - Independence

"Patrol training?" Gus asked quizzically.

"Yes, I need something to do, I mean I can't just sit around and do nothing, surely I could be of some help…?"

"You could, but you're just Shane's patrol assistant, I mean assistants don't really need any training…" Gus said.

"Yes but I'm not Shane's shadow, I need some independence! Please Gus?" I pleaded.

"Okay fine, but don't tell Shane yet, he'll probably be annoyed…"

"Why?" I asked.

"Ah, the thing is with Shane is he likes to be in control. But I'm sure he could learn to live with the idea after some time… Just don't say anything to him yet" Gus finalised.

"Thank you Gus! I won't!" I happily exclaimed. My plan had worked. As soon as I had thought of the idea of patrol training (I had overheard Shane talking about it to one of the army officials one night) I had gone straight to Gus and asked. It gives me something to do, keeps me busy and also keeps me away from Shane. He hadn't bothered to come after me, but who could've blamed him. Although I was annoyed with him, I could feel his absence. I didn't like being cold with him. It felt like something was missing…. Never mind. I trailed back to my room and hung my new clothes up, putting my new underwear in the drawers and my new jackets on the hooks on the back of the door. In the process of organising my shoes, somebody knocked on my door.

"Zoey?" Shane's voice called, muffled by the door.

"It's unlocked" I called back. He entered, looking rather sorry for himself.

"I'm sorry Zoey, I shouldn't of said what I had said" He mumbled, looking down at the cream carpet.

"No. I'm sorry. You're right… I am quite selfish." I said.

"But you're new to all this, it's difficult to adapt…"

"But I will eventually. It just takes time. So I've decided to take up patrol training."

At first, I wasn't quite sure Shane had heard me as he just looked at me weirdly. But then my words penetrated his mind, and he started stammering.

"Zo..Zo..Zoe? Patrol training? That's ridiculous! You have no idea what you're doing! Leading your own patrols can be dangerous! I don't want anything happening to you!" He exclaimed.

"Why? You barely know me Shane."

"You and I both know that's not true" He said, staring deep into my soul. I did know that wasn't true.

"I care about you Zoey. I don't know why. Maybe I don't know you, and it's just some weird coincidence, but I still care about you Zoey."

And I cared about him too. So after a little conversation with Gus, Shane decided that he would be the one to train me, and then we could both be co. patrol leaders. Training stated the next day. I had to be up at six… Hell.
