Words in italics are Sarah's thoughts!
"I love you dear."
Not in the way I want you to.
"I love you too, Therese."
"Can you believe it Sarah? We're graduating in four months!"
"I know. It's way too surreal. Honestly, I have no idea what I want to do."
I just know that I want you to do whatever it winds up being with me.
"Well, whatever it is… I'm sure you'll be happy. I can't imagine you not being happy, Sarah."
That's because I'm always happy around you.
I lean my head on her shoulder and she kisses my hair softly. Everything in me begs her to repeat the gesture.
"We'll always be friends. Right, Therese?"
Because I don't know how to live without you.
"Why wouldn't we be? Who else could handle being my best friend?" She winks at me and I try not to flush.
I love being your best friend, but that's all I'll ever be isn't it?
"You're in a good mood, hon."
She laughs. "I'm excited for life to begin. I'm excited to leave everything behind."
She turns back to her food and I look down at my own.
Please don't leave me behind. Please, Therese. I may not be the most important person in your life and I may never be, but don't leave me.
I throw the rest of my lunch away and distract myself with the gossip going on beside me, but my eyes keep drifting back to her.
