"Stay away from me, James" she said, pushing the boy away from her. Her eyes were red, and dry tears stained her cheeks.
"You know I can't do that Lena." he said, walking toward the girl. She spun, so fast she nearly fell over.
"I can't do this anymore. Pretend I don't care when you flirt with those girls. I told you how I felt, and I was okay with how we planned this out, but it just seems like ever since that night all you do is flaunt a new girl on your arm." the tears became evident again. In 15 years of friendship, it was the only time besides when her father died, he had seen those tears.
"Lena, I" he tried to say something but he couldn't.
"Next time don't ask what my biggest secret is. There's a reason I keep shit to myself James. A reason I don't tell my best friend stuff." She pulled her bag higher on her shoulder and walked toward the door. "Tell the girl I'm sorry I walked in. I didn't know. Oh and here's your key." she placed it on the table.
"Lena, take the key, we'll work it out." he said, reaching forward and grabbing her arm. She pulled back like she was burnt by fire.
"I don't think it's a good idea to see each other for a while. I need to move on, get over myself." She ran out of the apartment before he could say anything else. He picked the key up in his hands, and he felt his eyes get a bit wet. She was his best friend since they were five. He was afraid of admitting he loved her back because he didn't want to hurt her. Now he just lost her.
"Baby" the girl whose name he couldn't remember walked into the kitchen, with only her undergarments on. He was still staring at the door. She placed her hands on his back. "Come back to bed." he let his mind go numb and couldn't remember anything that happened.
The long looks in the super market, or the occasional slip in the class room was the only contact they had. A party here or there. He was going crazy. She was the only person in the world he told everything too. Now there was no one. She was losing her mind. He was the only person who had seen the side of her that she vowed no one else would ever see.
"This party is banging, James" his friend said, picking up yet another beer. He looked lazily over at him.
"You're drinking too much, Kyle." he said, taking the beer from his hand. His friend pouted, but then was distracted by a girl and forgot about the beer.
"Stop being so touchy feely, Will." His head snapped up. He would know that voice anywhere. His eyes searched the room, and he saw her. Her hair was up, and she had put make up on. She was staring up at a guy, his arms wrapped securely around her waist. Without thinking he walked forward and placed a hand on her shoulder. She turned; a big smile on her pink lips, but it fell as soon as their eyes met.
"Great party man." her boyfriend said. He kissed her cheek and then said something about going to get some drinks. Her face flushed red and she pushed him as she walked in the other direction.
"Lena, can we talk." he said, grabbing her arm. She spun and was so close he could smell the perfume on her. It was the one he got her for her birthday last year.
"You had fifteen years to talk. Obviously those years meant nothing to you though. So I am going to find the boy friend that makes me happy and makes me forget about you."
"What do you mean those years meant nothing to me?"
She laughed, but he could see she was holding back the tears. "You didn't come after me. You stayed with her. You choose right there and then. I wasn't important enough. Not even as your friend."
He ran a hand through his hair, and her heart broke. She loved how he did that. "Lena, I could barely process what was happening. I couldn't move from the spot I was in."
"That's what her face book status said the next day. 'Greatest sex I've had in a while'" her voice went up a few octaves.
"You're mad because I slept with her!"
"I use to be upset because I wasn't worth more than good sex. Not anymore. I don't give a shit anymore."
"So you're just going to walk away again."
"Again. I walked away for the last time two months ago. Now I'm just going to leave you alone so you can enjoy your party." her boyfriend came up and put his arm around her.
"You okay babe." he said, kissing her hair.
He watched her walk 5 feet, but he wasn't going to lose her again.
"Lena! I'm not letting you get away again." He yelled, running to catch up with her.
"Back off buddy." her boyfriend said.
"That's my best friend. I'm not losing her again."
"Listen. I know what happened. But she needs her space. I can't let you hurt her like that again."
"I've known her for 15 years. You've known her for a few months. Don't act like you have so much respect for her."
Her boyfriend knocked him out with one punch.
"You are possibly the biggest idiot I've ever had the pleasure of meeting." She said. He opened his eyes and saw her sitting there. She had and ice pack in her hand was applying it to his eye.
"What happened," he said sitting up. The world spun and she pushed him down.
"You provoked my boyfriend, who happened to be an MMA and ex street fighter."
"He sounds dangerous."
"You look stupid."
"I want my best friend back."
"You going to let me walk away again."
"Never." he sat up and pulled her into him. She still smelled like chocolate and roses. He still felt like her favorite pillow. He wanted to say he loved her, but she would run away again. She felt herself falling for him again, but wasn't going to let herself get trapped.
"He cheated on me" she flew into his arms and the tears cascaded down her face. She pulled back and looked at him. "I'm sorry; I had nowhere else to go."
"What are best friends for" he pulled her closer. She fit perfectly into him. She always had fit perfectly in his arms.
"Listen, Lena," he looked down at her.
"I just can't believe I was so stupid. Every relationship I try to get into I end up getting hurt. I can't do it anymore. I need a break." she took a deep breath. "I'm so glad you were smart enough to keep us as just friends." his heart crashed to the floor.
"No" he whispered quietly. She gave him a quizzical look.
"Yes, no. I am not losing you again."
"What are you talking about James?"
"I only said no last time because I was afraid I was going to hurt you. But damn it I have loved you for nearly 2 years now."
"James…" she spoke hesitantly.
"I know the bastard just broke your heart, and you just got out a relationship, but I'll wait. But first I have to do something." he took a deep breath. Tears were forming in her eyes again.
"James, please, don't be lying to me." she whispered. He licked his lips.
"I swear to god I'm not." he gently brushed his lips against hers. She gasped, and pushed herself closer to him, deepening the kiss. His hands wound themselves around her waist, and she tangled hers in his hair. She pulled back and her eyes scanned his face.
"I love you James."
"I love you too, Lena." he pressed his lips against her again. She smiled into the kiss. He was her best friend. She was his best friend. Nothing would ever change that.
