CHAPTER 01

I'LL ENJOY THE LAZINESS

23rd of June

High school.

It had always been a place for drama and whatnot. Who could forget the tired and impatient teachers, the bullies no one could avoid, the half-artificial food and the huge gap between idiots and misunderstood geniuses? It was a cold, harsh jungle in which kids were shoved into, where they were expected to become adults and were most failed miserably. Still, no matter how painful this place was, no one could deny the unforgettable good times, the love, the friends made there. High school was an inevitable path to becoming a better human being.

But no matter what, it's still hell.

And they were glad it was finally over.

Since prom night was nothing more than a convention for girls to feel like princesses and for guys to get laid, the small group left just as soon as the food was consumed. They ended up in a backyard with a makeshift fire, camp chairs and an old cooler filled to the brim with enough alcohol to give them the worst hangover they would ever get: all of that complimented by a gorgeous starry night sky... it was, to say the least, satisfying.

Jeremy Varin tried to ignore the pain caused by the ice on his arm as he tried to reach for his only beer of the night at the bottom of the cooler. He shook off the last bits stuck on his pale skin and lazily walked back to his camping chair close to the fire. For a post-prom party, it was rather small... a five-people-party, to be exact, but in all honesty, Jeremy didn't feel like dancing with other students he never liked on music he could never endure.

He took a moment to contemplate his friends. This was all that was left from these past five years; the only thing worth keeping. On his right was the only girl of the party; Alexis. Her short brown hair and sharp attitude had earned her the 'most boyish girl of the whole damn school' award, not that she minded of course. She had spent her entire teenage years surrounded by guys, and judging by the way she quickly got rid of her high heels, hairpins and jewels, things weren't going to change anytime soon.

"Hey Terry, toss me the marshmallow, would you?" she asked her chair neighbor. Terrence, clearly uncomfortable in his chair, reached for an unopened bag to his feet and threw it in her direction. He then returned to struggling with his blue tie, but quickly gave up and took off his jacket instead. Terry, as they liked to call him, was without a doubt the smoothest of them all; always relaxed and satisfied with his life. Probably the laziest too... He tied his just-a-bit-too-long hair in a short ponytail and, with newfound determination, struggled with his tie once more.

On the other side of the fire facing Jeremy was David, texting his girlfriend. In their little group, David could be easily considered as the pretty boy; the kind of guy who could have been friend with all the popular kids with his easygoing behaviour along with his strong body, but simply decided otherwise.

"David, I think your honeypuff can survive ten minutes without texting you," said Alexis while stuffing marshmallows in her mouth.

"Fuck off," he replied, "I could be getting laid right now."

"Well you just had to ditch us."

"But he didn't," added Terrence.

"Hm, I wonder why," smirked the girl. "David, don't tell me you expected something fun would happen here! We all knew this was going to be boring as hell."

David just grunted, but his voice was silenced under the sound of ripping paper.

Jeremy turned to his left neighbour, Michael, who had been fuelling the fire with math homework and history books for the last twenty minutes. Saying they weren't close would be the biggest lie he could ever tell himself; they met in the first year of high school like the rest of the gang but... something just clicked. What they had was clearly the kind of friendship he'd only come across one in his lifetime, so he might as well savor it while it lasted. Michael had already taken off his vest, his tie and his shoes, leaving him in nothing but his black pants and his white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He turned his dark grey eyes to Jeremy, and after a short pause, handed him a pile of old homework.

"Wanna join me?"

"Sure."

A comfortable silence settled among the small group, complemented by the crackling of fire and the ripping pages. David finally put away his cell phone and observed his quiet companions. They must have felt his eyes on them, because they all stopped whatever they were doing and looked straight back at him.

A few seconds were enough to make them burst into uncontrollable laughter.

"We need to get drunk," chuckled Terrence. They all agreed by taking a gulp of their beer, trying to hold their smiles the best they could in hope they wouldn't choke on the alcohol.

"What we really need is something to do," added Alexis, "we're way too lazy right now."

"I don't know about you," disagreed Michael, "but I'll enjoy the laziness. In two months all we're gonna do is work work work."

The girl giggled. "In your case it's worst, isn't it? When are you two moving again?" she asked as she pointed him and Jeremy.

"5th of August... right?" he wondered, throwing an unsure look at Jeremy. His friend nodded at him, confirming his thoughts.

"What are you talking about, Alex?" interfered David once again. "You're moving in a week."

"Yes, and then I can enjoy my last summer before college for two wonderful months! You guys better be there to help me, by the way."

"Can't you just grow a pair and do it all by yourself like a big girl?" joked David, to which Alexis replied by flinging a marshmallow at him.

Jeremy chuckled, hoping these kinds of parties, as lame as they were, would never stop. Although he knew it would come to an end eventually... soon, maybe. With college around the corner, there was no way things could stay the same for very long. Still... he'd be damned if he wouldn't try to keep this all together.

Just when he finished ripping the last page of Michael's old homework and chucked it in the fire, David raised his beer for everyone to see.

"To college," he cheered, quickly followed by the rest of his friends.

To college.

5th of August

"Ugh, Jerry, please kill me right here right now," begged Alexis.

Well, he would, but then there wouldn't be anyone around to kill him.

Needless to say, none of them could stand the heat for very long. It wasn't a particularly hot day, but with all the moving and going back to get more boxes and the lack of air clim and mostly the fact that his apartment was on the fourth floor... there was just no helping it.

At least the worst was done; his bed, the oh-so-small table and the two chairs were already in place, and since the rest was already there when he rented the place, the only thing left to do was to bring all his boxes upstairs. And unpack them, but that would wait.

Jeremy looked at the only helper left. The poor girl was melting in her shorts and t-shirt, and her tired eyes were begging for a break. He half-heartedly chuckled, feeling exactly the same. "Don't worry, we're done. Just go splash some cold water of your face and we'll join the others." If she had had the energy to beam at him, she would have done it. Instead, she just limped to the tiny bathroom and shoved her whole face in the sink, letting freezing water run in her hair and over her face. She straightened up after a few seconds and forced Jeremy to have his turn in the sink.

He grunted as soon as he saw his face in the dirty mirror. His blond locks were damp with sweat and stuck on his forehead and the back of his neck. His green, tired eyes weren't any better; the dark rings under them were deep enough to make the rest of his thin features look like a living corpse. He stopped the examination right there and splashed water on his face, already feeling better.

Michael's apartment was on the second floor (lucky bastard; the heat was already more bearable on that floor) so it didn't even take half a minute to get there. With the door wide opened, they let themselves in without knocking, taking a moment to examine his friend's new home. It was just as small as Jeremy's, except that he had a couch. The blond haired had expected to find them in the same state he and Alexis were: sweaty, tired, starving... but no, they were all sitting on the couch with the look of people who had been on break for a while. Terrence looked up and noticed them first.

"What with your hair?" he asked. "You two just finished your romantic shower together?"

"Aw, don't be like that; next time we'll invite you," smirked Alexis as she grabbed a chair to sit with them.

Jeremy was about to imitate her, but a feeling stopped him. Like he was being watched. The culprit was quickly found when his eyes met Michael's, who just wouldn't stop staring at him.

"...What?"

"Um... no, n-nothing," the chocolate haired boy stuttered. "We should, uh... get something to eat."

"Way ahead of you," declared David, his cell phone already glued to his ear. "And since I'm calling, I get to choose."

In normal circumstances, they would have argued with him for hours, but at that point, they wanted food shoved down their throats, no matter what kind it was. Knowing David though, it was probably pizza, and it seemed to be fine for everyone.

Jeremy pushed his wet hair back, still feeling not-so-cold-anymore drops down his neck, and grabbed the only chair left to sit down with the rest of them.

"Are you telling I'm alone in every freaking class?"

"That does seem to be the case, David," answered Terrence as he eyed the five different schedules on the floor.

Now that their stomachs were full, that darkness was slowly taking place outside and that the only thing left to do was open a couple of boxes, the small group guessed it was the best moment to check their college schedule to see how often they would get to see each others in class... or in this case, how rarely. David was completely alone, Alexis had literature with Terrence, and Jeremy... well he could consider himself lucky: three classes with Michael. The perks of being in the same program.

David fell against the backrest and let himself sink in the couch, groaning all the way. "Awesome, good start, can I change my schedule?"

"Don't you have to pay for that?" guessed Michael, making his sofa neighbor moan in aggravation once more. "Aw come on, it's not so bad."

"Says who? You get moral support three times a week AND you two live in the same block, so don't you dare go 'come on, it's not so bad' on me."

"David, is that your way of saying you'll miss us?" chuckled Alexis.

"Of course it is," agreed Terrence as he picked his schedule on the ground. "Hey guys, sorry to crash the party, but I need to go now."

"What, already?"

"You're not the only ones moving; I've got packing to do."

"Right behind you," said Alexis as she forced David and his feet and dragged him to the door, closely followed by Terrence. "I still haven't spent a minute with my roommate, I'd better work on that."

"See you guys Friday," added the tallest.

"What's on Friday?" inquired the chocolate haired.

"Party. My parents' house. Don't forget!" Terrence reminded them.

The door closed with the weird click of a handle that needed to be changed, and the two young adults found themselves alone. Alone for real this time; no brothers or sisters or parents around to spy on them while they lazed around all day. Alone in their own apartment. Jeremy glanced at Michael, clearly not feeling the desire to go back upstairs to his new home and realize how on-his-own he really was.

"Wanna unpack some more?" he asked.

Michael didn't move, nor did he respond. He just stared blankly.

"...Video games all night long?"

"Now you're talking."

A/N: I know, I know, not much action in this chapter, but you need the show the context and all... so context it is. But don't worry, friends, things start happening right in the second chapter! I'll try not to make you guys wait for to long.

For those who are reading First Glance remake, yes, I'm working on it, but I have school and stuff to take care of... but don't worry!
