Skipping Into Love.

Monday, June third.

I stared out the window with my head resting on my hand.

We don't have air in the car so we have the windows rolled down.

You probably want to know who I am.

I'm Peggy Jones or P.J.; I'm twenty-seven years old, I have green eyes and darkish brown hair, like the color of chestnuts, and I'm 5'7.

We're driving back through the familiar town I've lived in for only God knows how long.

To my house, where John will be waiting for me to come home.

Mama suddenly turned into a liquor store.

I sighed, rolling my eyes.

I looked over at Mama.

"I'll only be a minute," She rushed to tell me

"Well hurry up Mama," I said harshly

I just want to go home.

I've still got to feed the kids.

Mama got out and rushed into the liquor store.

I let my eyes droop closed as I thought about my life.

I have two kids, one nine and one ten, a husband who times me when I'm gone, and I'm scared to leave him.

Mama screaming out my name broke me from my thoughts.

"Peggy! Peggy! Guess who I ran into!" She exclaimed excitedly

I opened my eyes and grumbled out,

"Come on Mama, let's go."

"Peggy!" She exclaimed when she got to the car window

"Guess who I ran into," She smiled

I looked out of the window to see Tommy Anderson.

I unbuckled my seat belt and got out of the car.

I ran over to Tommy and hugged him.

Tommy hugged me and spun me around.

Tommy Anderson is my first love; he has deep blue eyes like the color of the lake down the road from his house. He has beautiful short brown hair and he's about 6'0.

He's one year older than me, making him twenty-eight.

"Hey P.J.," Tommy greeted, putting me down

"Hey Tommy, how have you been?" I asked

For the first time today, I didn't have to force a smile.

"Pretty good, what about you?" Tommy questioned

"Eh," I shrugged "I've been better,"

"Long day?" Tommy asked

I sighed, nodding my head.

"What's been going on? It's been so long since I've seen you." Tommy looked into my eyes

"A lot has gone on actually, I'm married now," I bit my lip

"Oh," He responded "Do you have kids?"

I nodded.

"Two, a boy and a girl." I explained

"We should meet up sometime," He smiled

"Yeah," I looked up at him

Tommy grabbed my hands.

"Peggy, you know that if there is anything wrong, you can tell me." He told me

I love you. I still do.

"I know," I nodded "We should grab a cup of coffee and catch up,"

"I'd love to; I know a great little café down on Main Street." Tommy smiled at me brightly

Get up some nerve Jones.

"Shall we tonight, I don't have to be home for a little bit." I explained

"Definitely, should we take my truck?" Tommy asked

"Sure," I nodded

"Let me tell my Mama where I'm going real fast okay?" I questioned

"Okay," Tommy winked at me

I ran over to Mama who was in the driver seat of the car.

"Hey Mama, I'm gonna head over to Main Street with Tommy. Can you go on home from here?" I asked

"Sure Honey, have a good time." She told me sweetly

"Thanks Mama, I'll see you at the house." I said, running back over to Tommy

"Are you ready to go Princess?" Tommy questioned, offering his hand for me to hold

I intertwined my fingers with his and replied,

"You bet,"

We walked to his four door truck and got in, buckling ourselves up.

"So, what are your kids' names?" Tommy asked

"Lisa and Joey," I explained

"A boy named Lisa and a girl named Joey," Tommy joked, nodding his head

I giggled.

"The girl is named Lisa and the boy is named Joey," I laughed "You always know how to make me laugh,"

"Those are beautiful names P.J.," Tommy chuckled

"Why thank you kind sir," I pretended I was British

"No problem my lady," Tommy responded with a fake British accent

"I've missed you Tommy," I told him

"I've missed you too P.J.," He replied

"Here we are," Tommy said, pulling into a parking space

Tommy and I got out and walked in and sat down at a table.

"So, who'd you marry? Do I know him?" Tommy raised an eyebrow playfully

"Johnny Taylor," I stated, looking down at my hands

"As in the Johnny Taylor who got arrested for driving drunk?" Tommy asked, shocked

I nodded.

"Babydoll, he ain't a good guy." Tommy told me

"I know," I whispered

Tommy tilted my head up with his hand.

Seeing the worried look in his eyes made my eyes fill with tears.

"I'm scared Tommy," I said honestly, a single tear falling down my face

Tommy wiped my tear away with his thumb.

"What happened with him dear?" Tommy questioned

I rolled up my sleeves and showed him the bruises on my arms.

He gaped.

"Did he?" Tommy started to ask

I nodded, rolling my sleeves down.

"Babydoll, what is stopping you from leaving him?" Tommy asked

"I have two kids and no job," I looked down at the table

Tommy tilted my head up again.

"Listen to me," Tommy ordered softly

"Okay?" He questioned

"Okay," I replied

"I hate seeing that piece of scum treat you like this, right now, I'm living with Flora Mae, and I want you and your kids to move in with us." Tommy explained to me

"I couldn't ask that of you," I shook my head

"That's why I'm ordering you to move in," Tommy smirked

"But, what about-"I started but he cut me off

"Don't you worry your pretty little head about him, I'll protect you. I promise," Tommy nodded

"Thank you so much Tommy," I sniffed

"It's my pleasure, you know I'd do anything for you P.J.," Tommy rubbed my hand

"Hey y'all, sorry for the wait, what can I get ya?" The waitress asked

"I'll have a cup of coffee please," I replied

"And for you," She questioned, pointing her pen at Tommy

"Same," Tommy stated

"Okay, I'll be right back." She smiled, walking off

"So, where did the name Lisa come from?" Tommy asked, changing the subject

"She got her name from Lisa Presley," I explained

"Lisa Marie Presley? Elvis's daughter?" Tommy questioned

"Yep," I nodded

"Here ya go two coffees." The waitress said, setting the coffees down in front of us

"And by the way, I think y'all make a really cute couple." She added, walking off

I blushed, looking down.

"Aw, you're blushing." Tommy cooed

"Uh, um, uh," I stuttered

"Don't worry P.J. I think it's cute," Tommy chuckled

"You do?" I asked, sipping a sip of my coffee

"Yeah," Tommy responded, sipping on his coffee as well

I smiled.

After about ten minutes, we'd both finished our coffee and were heading to my house.

I tapped my foot nervously.

Tommy put his hand on my knee, stopping me from tapping.

"Don't be nervous, it's going to be okay." He told me

"Okay," I nodded

We pulled up into the yard minutes later.

"Stay calm, I'll be right by you the whole time." Tommy explained

I took a deep breath as I said,

"I'm ready, let's go."

Tommy and I got out of the truck and went inside.

"John!" I called out

"I'm in the kitchen!" He called back

Tommy and I walked into the kitchen.

"John," I started, trying not to let the fear in my voice show

John turned around and gaped.

"Who's this?" He asked loudly

"John," I started again

"Shut up," He spat "Who's this?" He questioned harshly

"I was told to shut up," I said boldly

"Don't be a smart-"John started but Tommy cut him off

By punching him in the mouth.

I gaped.

"Mommy?" Lisa asked from the hallway

I rushed over to her and ushered her back into her room.

"Alright babygirl, you and me are going to pack up some of your clothes and stuffed animals okay?" I questioned

"Okay Mommy," Lisa smiled as she got out her Tinkerbell suitcase

Lisa opened her dresser drawers and we filled her suitcase with clothes.

"Okay choose two stuffed animals to take with you," I told her, zipping up her suitcase

"Okay Mommy," Lisa said, grabbing a purple teddy bear and a white rabbit

"I want you to stay here and play with your toys until I come and get you okay?" I asked

"Okay Mommy," Lisa nodded

I ran over to Joey's room.

He's playing a computer game.

"Joey, honey, I need you to gather up some clothes." I told him

Joey clicked on something and turned around in his computer chair.

"Why where are we going?" He asked

"You, Lisa and I are going to stay at my friend's house." I said vaguely

"What about Dad?" He questioned

"Your father is going to stay here," I explained

"Okay," Joey replied skeptically

"Come on, we need to hurry." I rushed

Joey got up and got his Spiderman suitcase out.

We filled the suitcase up with clothes.

"Pick out two toys to take with you," I ordered softly, zipping up the suitcase

"Okay," Joey smiled, grabbing a Spiderman toy and an Iron man action figure

"Stay here and play until I come and get you, okay?" I questioned

"Okay," Joey nodded

I rushed out back into the kitchen.

"Don't you ever, ever touch her again, got it?" Tommy asked, holding him by the shirt

"Tommy, put him down." I spoke up

Tommy put him down and I said,

"I'm leaving you John, we're through."

"And what makes you think you're doing that?" John questioned

"Because she has me," Tommy stated

"Now, I'm going to take the kids and leave. Goodbye John," I explained in monotone

I walked over to Lisa's room and said,

"Come on babygirl, it's time to go."

"Okay Mommy," Lisa smiled sweetly as she got up off of the floor with her stuffed animals and suitcase

Lisa and I walked out into the hallway and I opened Joey's bedroom door.

"Come on Joey, it's time to go." I told him

"Okay," Joey replied, getting his toys and suitcase and coming out into the hallway with Lisa and me

I looked at my watch.

Eight o' clock.

That means one thing.

Dinner time.

"Mommy," Lisa started, tugging on my pant leg

I looked down at her.

"I'm hungry," Lisa said

"I know babygirl; we'll get something on the way to Mommy's friend's house." I nodded

"Ready to go?" Tommy asked me

"As ready as I'll ever be," I smiled

"Come on kids, it's time to go." I explained

Tommy, Joey, Lisa, and I walked out to his truck.

I buckled Joey and Lisa in and put their suitcases in the floorboard.

I slid into the passenger seat next to Tommy.

"Thank you Tommy," I repeated

"It's really no problem babydoll," Tommy smiled over at me as he started up the truck

We out of the driveway and Tommy drove down the road.

"Hey Tommy, the kids are hungry, do you think we can stop by somewhere and get some food?" I asked

"Sure," Tommy nodded

I smiled as I looked out the window.

I watched as the town I've come to know and love passed on by as Tommy drove.

For the first time in ten years, I was truly happy.
