Story of Them

Once when they were little

She said to the boy

I Love You

And he said I Love You Back

And it was innocent

And the meant it in the most pure, honest way possible

Because this was the truth

And their parents told them not to lie

Once, on one of the days were one is

Breaking away from childhood

She said to the boy

I Love You

And he said I Love You Back

And it felt strange this time

Tinged with an undertone that signified

Some new feelings growing

But it was still the truth

And their parents were beginning to catch them in their lies

Once, when they were shooting taller than their parents

When they were discovering their bodies and each other

She said to the man-child

I Love You

And he said I Love You Back

And it was different

Because he meant it in a different way than usual

It held desire

But it was the truth

And he could not bear to tell her a life

Once, when they were sure of themselves and their life choices

When they were this close to completing their lives at home

And entering the real world

She said to the young man

I Love You

And there was a deep desire in her words

And he said I Love You Back

And the desire in his words was just as deep

And they both felt it, they both mean it

This is the truth

There is no room for lies.
