Inside the city of Tokyo, there was an apartment building in a neighborhood. One of the household living in the apartment was the Takanami siblings. Takanami Eiji was in his first year in high school. He had short jet black hair with hazel brown eyes. He had an average height for a sixteen-year-old boy. However he had a quite decent look that could attract girls.
Eiji went into his sister's room and pulled the curtains in her room open, letting the sunshine beaming in through the window. The light was so bright that it disturbed Kazue's sleep. Takanami Kazue was a young woman in her twenties with long brown hair.
"Hurry up and wake up." said the boy while he left the room.
"5 more minutes…." murmured Kazue while covering her face with her blanket.
After a while, when Kazue managed to get off the bed and went out of her room, her brother was serving food on the dining table. He was in his new uniform, which included a dark brown blazer, a black tie and a pair of gray pants.
"Hey, sis. Breakfast is ready." said Eiji when he saw his sister, "Well, I'm leaving!"
"Ah….Be careful on your journey…." said Kazue as she yawned.
As Eiji was on his way to school, he stumbled across two girls who were walking in front of him. One girl was a teenager wearing a uniform from Eiji's school, while the other was a kid in her primary school uniform.
"Sakura! Matsuri!" The two girls then turned to their back. The elder girl had brownish black shoulder-length hair with a pair of amethyst eyes shining in the sunlight, while the little girl beside her was a replica of herself, only with longer hair tied in two pigtails. Both of them were friends with Eiji for a very long time.
"Good morning, Eiji!" greeted the little girl with a high-pitched voice.
"You two are early today." Eiji stated.
"That's because she wants to m-" Before Matsuri finished her sentence, her sister immediately covered her mouth.
"She's so excited about going to school that she wouldn't let me sleep in." said Sakura with a force laugh, while her younger sister was struggling to release her grip. When Sakura did just that, she glared at Matsuri with a warning look.
"T-That's right!" said Matsuri with a fake laughter, "I can't wait to meet with my friends in school!"
"Good to hear that," said Eiji with a smile. He then looked at Sakura and continued, "Shall we go then?"
"Y-Yes!" replied the teenage girl.
In Umeshin High, everyone was excited to begin a new semester, and so are the second-year students in class 2-1. However, there is an exception. A young lad with medium-length ginger-colored hair was sitting in his own seat, lying on the back of the chair with a book covering his face. A friend of his came to him and said, "Oi, Hiroshima!" The boy then removed the book off his face and revealed a handsome look. His eyes were barely open even though he was awake.
"What is it?" he mumbled sleepily.
"Today is the first day of school!" replied his friend.
"So? This means that there'll be freshmen! When there are freshmen, there'll be cute girls!"
"Keep dreaming…" said the red-haired boy before he drifted off to his slumber again.
"Just because you have all the girls around you, that doesn't mean I won't too!" exclaimed the other boy, "Hey, are you listening to me?"
Meanwhile the two childhood friends had reached the school, Eiji went up to a group of guys.
"Hey, Takanami! Nice to see you here!" greeted one of the guys as he patted Eiji's back. While Eiji was enjoying his reunion with his friends from middle school, Sakura smiled and went to the bulletin. She spotted both her and Eiji's name in the same category.
"We're in the same class…" she thought to herself in bliss. But she immediately snapped out of it when she heard Eiji's voice.
"So, we're in the same class…" said the young guy, "Well, please take care of me this year." He then gave Sakura a grin, which made her blush. She quickly turned her face away before Eiji was able to see the shade of color on her face.
"A-Ah…Same here." she stammered.
"What's the matter with you?" asked Eiji when he saw Sakura's reaction.
"Nothing!" the girl exclaimed. After that, Eiji widened his eyes slightly.
"Did you hear that?" he asked.
"I didn't any-Wait, Eiji!" But the young boy ignored her call and ran afar.
After running for a while, Eiji arrived at an old, abandoned building. He then approached a room where the music was louder. At the entrance of the room, he was stunned by his sight. A beautiful young girl was sitting by a black grand piano, running her fingers on the black and white keys with a rhythm. Her long hair was honey brown-colored and looked like it was shining as the sun entered the room. The girl finished playing the piece and opened her eyes. Her large emerald eyes were sparkling brightly. After that, she put down her hand.
"You're amazing!" Eiji exclaimed out in the blue, surprising the girl. The girl quickly ran to the window and began to climb outside.
"Wait!" A thumping sound was heard, along with a bit of ruffling sound produced by the grass. Eiji rushed to the window to see her condition. The girl's body was flat on the ground, while facing downwards. She then got up and sat on her knees. She then proceeded to run away from Eiji.
"W-Wait!" exclaimed the boy, but the girl didn't listen and continued to run. Eiji then climbed over the window and began to chase after the mysterious girl.
As Eiji reached a place where more people were seen, the girl was no longer in sight. While he was trying to find her, his friends called him.
"Where have you been, Takanami?" asked one of them. Eiji ignored his question as he was still searching for the girl. When he realized that his efforts were in vain, he then replied his friend, "Nowhere."
After that, he and his friends arrived at their new class. Sakura was waiting at the entrance. She looked glad to see Eiji. She asked him, "Geez, where did you go just now?"
"Sorry for making you worry." said Eiji. Suddenly Sakura was blushing. She turned her eyes away from Eiji and said, "I wasn't really worried." She then realized that her childhood friend was not giving her attention. "Eiji?" she called. After that, she knew what he was looking at.
"That girl…" said Eiji. The stranger he met just now was sitting at the corner of the room. Then he got distracted by the sound of a teacher's footsteps. He quickly went into the classroom and got into a seat. Their homeroom teacher came in. He was a middle-aged man with grayish black hair wearing a brown suit. He was slightly plump and was wearing a pair of glasses.
"Alright, class. I'm Tokoro, your homeroom teacher," said the teacher. He then flipped a book open in his hands and started to read the names out. As he was calling the names, the ones who owned the names replied him. Then the teacher called out, "Amakura."
The brunette Eiji met earlier merely raised her hand without her word. After a moment of pause, the teacher said, "Okay, next is Amamiya…"Eiji looked at the girl whose name he just known. The silent character she possessed made him even more curious about her.
After school was finished, Eiji watched Amakura as she left the classroom without delaying a second. Sakura then approached Eiji and said with a smile, "Let's go home together."
"Oh, okay." he replied absentmindedly. Sakura placed her hand inside her pocket. Then she exclaimed, "Eh?"
"What's wrong?" asked Eiji.
"My wallet, it's missing," answered Sakura, "I must have left it in the changing room just now. Why don't you go to the school entrance and wait for me there?"
"Okay, I understand." said Eiji.
After that, Eiji did what Sakura had told him. As he was on the way, he ran into Amakura. "She's still here?" he thought. Then he caught a glimpse of her limping. He remembered the incident in the morning. He quickly ran over to her.
"Are you alright?" he asked. The girl quickened her pace. "Wait!" exclaimed Eiji. Then the girl took out a sketchbook. On the page it was written, "What do you want?"
"N-Nothing," replied Eiji, "Eh? You can't talk?" The girl nodded her head.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I'm-"
"Takanami, right?" the girl wrote.
"Y-Yeah. I'm Takanami Eiji. It's written with the kanji 'great' and 'second'. And you're…"
"Akari." The characters she wrote made the boy smiled.
"The 'light', is it?" he said, "That's a nice name."
"Thank you." wrote the girl with a smile.
Meanwhile, Sakura was rushing to meet up with Eiji. "Good thing I found it." she said as she sighed in relief. Along the way, she saw Eiji with Akari through the window. She put her footsteps to a halt. She could see that Eiji was smiling. She placed her hand on her chest, where her aching heart was. At the same time, Hiroshima was coming towards Sakura's direction. As the girl was turning away, she accidently bumped into him. Sakura moved away and revealed her teary eyes to the ginger-haired boy. She then quickly bowed down and apologized, and immediately ran away. Hiroshima merely watched her leave, with a lot of thoughts in his head.
