Fresh green grass

Blankets otherwise barren land.

The white stallion throws up his head,

Nose quivering; eyes searching for danger-

An intruder:

A midnight thief who doesn't belong.

The black stallion creeps close

The white tosses his head,

Intelligent eyes behind a thick forelock

Instantly warn his mares.

The aspiring thief freezes,

Too late.

The protector charges

Ramming his foe

Snow white against night black

Legs lash, teeth clack

Quick as it started, it's over

The failed thief slinks away,

Pride wounded, mission failed.

The herd master snorts

Warning him against trying once more.
