Ships in the Night

You are more than these other vessels
Of blood and bone;
Your heart is strung out
From the mast of your spine –
A sail filled with the gale force winds
Of your mind.

Let my fingertips climb
Up the rigging of your ribs;
I'll rest my palm over your heart
And be its lookout.

Your lips are a compass
Exploring east and west,
North and south;
I'll sail us on the tidal wave –
The storm surge of your mouth.

You are more than these other vessels
Of blood and bone;
You are splintered wood
And ragged sails –
The lonely hero
Of mermaid's tales.
