Asking Her

I hate my life. I am so excited to go back to school. My dad beats me when I'm at home over the summer, so school keeps me busy, and he won't beat me to keep up with the appearances that we are a perfect little family. I have this crush, but she probably won't even give a look my way. I want to give a note to her on the first day of school, but I'm having trouble finding the right words. I want to let her know that I like her. If my dad finds this letter, I'll be screwed. He doesn't let me get too close to anyone because he fears that I'll tell someone he beats me. I looked at what I had so far.

Dear Katherine,

I like you. I want you to give me a chance. You wanna go to a movie this Friday?

I crossed all of that out. It sounded way too formal. It would probably scare her away. I started writing again.

Hey babe,

You seem like a cool chick. I'm taking you to a movie Friday.

See ya,

Heck no, I'm not giving that to her. I sound like a complete douche when I say that. I tried again.

You wanna hang out sometime?

It'll work. I'm not even gonna stress out about this anymore. I decided that I would make her some brownies. What girl doesn't like chocolate? I looked for a brownie recipe on my computer. I found a recipe and went downstairs to make it in the kitchen.

…a few hours later…

So, I finished the brownies about an hour ago. I am now mentally preparing myself for the next day.

…the next day…

I am at school now. I woke up early so I would have time to stop by Katherine's locker. She seemed to have the same idea as me. I went up to her and said awkwardly, "Uh… Hi."

"Yeah, uh, I'm John."

"I know who you are. You were that geeky kid in the back of the classroom in science in the seventh grade."

"Oh… right."

"What do you want?"

"Well, I made you these brownies and brought you this letter," I said shoving the bag and letter into her hands. "Gotta run."

"Uh, wait, John, come back. I'll read it while you're here. And keep the brownies. I can't have chocolate. I'm allergic to cocoa."

"Oh, sorry. I feel stupid."

"No, thank you, really. Katherine, you wanna hang out sometime? John," she said reading it out loud. "Uh, yeah, I'd love to."

"Yeah, how does Friday sound?"

"Great. Uh, what's your phone number? You can text me your address and we'll see about movie times or something."

We exchanged phone numbers and I ate the brownies. Poor girl can't have chocolate! That sucks. Well, I'm excited for my date on Friday. Maybe this year won't be so bad after all.
