In this world, all that one can see is a smooth surface of pure white. It it not known how the unusual form had come to exist, or from which substance it had been created from. It just seems to have materialized from the thin air. Perhaps it had been around since the beginning of time itself. Sometimes, though, The Sheet is tainted.
Those who do it are completely alien, as in different, to us. Yet, they are our creators. These things are called "humans". I am not entirely sure of how it is pronounced, but the name sounds fitting. These "humans" are quite ugly, and I do believe that they are vile creatures. But I cannot hate them. Without them, none of us would exist.
We are called Ids. We are all created from a different substance. Some are made from a sticky and splotchy substance called "ink", or by the smudgy "lead". There is even something that seems to be a watery mess that is put onto The Sheet with a brush of sorts.
An Id can never die. It can only evolve into multiple things. Sometimes, the Ids become beautiful messes, walking about The Sheet with the "substance from the brushes" dripping off of them. Sometimes Ids transform into entire different worlds, bringing about various other "characters" with differing personalities. I once even met something that had been dubbed a "film". Apparently, many of these "film Ids" exist from all around the human world.
Which am I? You see, that is my problem.
I am entirely unsure of what Id I truly am. I only appear as a shorter, more deformed version of the usual human. Short, with the four necessary limbs connected to my torso. Yet, my head is of a simple geometric shape of a sphere. Two circular "eyes" are placed onto head. I am a bland individual, with absolutely zero notable features. With my pure white body, I am a plain Id when compared to the others.
My creator sometimes comes back to me, and I feel hopeful. He stares down at me with a strange look in his eye. He seems unsure of what to do. The pointy object in his hand with the lead tip is always at the ready, but he never does anything to me. I've felt the tip of the yellow object brush against me many times, and I've felt great hope that I would blossom into something positively amazing. Yet, each and every time, the pink end comes and rubs away whatever mark had been made to me. It's quite a disappointing experience for me.
After this experience that comes every once in a long time, I'll head out from the Sheet and emerge myself into other Sheets through something called an Id Portal. It is always quite a fun experience for me. I like seeing what I may possibly become one day. I've met many Ids who have amazing characteristics, and are very well "developed" by their creator. I've come across quite a few, though, that are just an absolute mess. Their Sheet is one of many things. Stereotypical, cliched beyond all hope of being original, extremely bland, or, most commonly, a bad idea to begin with. A lot of "horror films" have come out this way, especially the "remakes". Those ridiculous morons tend to hold their heads to high in pride, but a few have been quite successful.
It gets quite lonely because of the fact that I never seem to draw massive amounts of attention to myself. Other Ids are flashy, and can spring into a conversation with another Id seconds later when they visit another Sheet.
Once, a silver robot of around my height tapped my shoulder, causing me to turn around. I was quite surprised, honestly, that another Id had actually wanted to speak with me. When he asked what my name was, I simply responded, "I do not have a name. I am an unused Id."
He scoffed and laughed at me, and seemed unable to regain his composure as I stood there, confused by what he was laughing about. "Excuse me. But what is so humorous to you?"
"The fact that you are unused and expect us to want to interact with you!" He laughed more, and I just squinted my blank eyes. "It's ridiculous!"
Before I could respond, another Id, who was much taller and some... creature, interrupted us by saying, "Excuse me, but you are currently a vacuum cleaner in your Sheet."
Cursing some rather horrible words under his breath, the robot stormed off. I did not get a chance to thank whoever it was that had insulted the annoying pest, as he was gone in a flash. Feeling completely bored with the current Sheet I was exploring, I decided that I should go to a different Sheet. I did not find anything interesting, though. The Sheet of films was full of ideas still in development. The Sheet of what humans call "art" was as colorful as ever, but I was feeling quite uninspired by what I had seen. A Sheet specifically for "novels" and "writing" was full of crazy worlds and insane characters. It was far too much for me to handle.
I was about to give up and head back to my Sheet to sit alone when I suddenly heard something. It was a sound that I had never heard before. I can only describe it as a light hum, but it was not coming from a voice. It was at a high octave and sent chills up my body, but it was beautiful. Haunting, actually. The sound changed "pitch" in a way, going lower and then going a bit higher than it had been the first time. Suddenly, another sound came. It definitely was coming from another Sheet. The Id Portal that I heard it coming from was not too far away either.
After traversing through the Id Portal to this new Sheet, I found myself immersed in beautiful visions and sounds. The humming sound was replaced by many other new sounds. Some sounded very similar to that lovely humming I had seen earlier. Others sounded very electronic and precise, and gave me the urge to move my body to the fun beats. What wonderland had I just thrown myself into?!
The Ids here were unusual, but very unique from the other Ids I had interacted with before. All of them had a beautiful sound coming from their mouths. Some were of a plain color as I was, but splashed in strange circular shapes that seemed to have "tails". A majority of the Ids were very eccentric. Not a single one looked like the other. Sure, there were some resemblances, but they were all different. A different beat came out of their mouths, different words and pitches coming out all at once.
I loved it. I was so immersed in the beauty that I was hearing that I did not realize I had bumped into another Id. "Oh. Please excuse me."
"It is fine." The voice was that of a female, and she seemed to have an accent of sorts. When I looked up at her, I was shocked to see her beauty. Her long hair was flowing in a sea of dark brown. She wore a long, blue dress that seemed to be made of waves of what I can only compare to "water". She looked down at me with a smile on her face. "You must be a new Id."
I shook my head. "No. I am only an unused Id."
"Really?" she asked. "For how long?"
"For far too long." She seemed to laugh at that. I would have smiled at the lovely laugh her voice had adorned. "What Sheet is this? I have never been here before."
She gestured with her arms as she said, "This is the Sheet of Music." I blinked. Music? What was music? I was unfamiliar with this term. "Here, every Id is what are called "songs"."
"Yes." Her pale lips showed a small smile. "Each song is different all in its own. Some tell stories. Others are about having fun. Many show human emotion." She took off on her left foot, and I followed. "You see, our creators channel whatever they are trying to say through us, much like through art or through novels. But our humans sing us."
Sing? She must have seen the puzzled look in my eyes, because she chuckled slightly before saying, "Let me show you what I mean. Come." She led me to an Id Portal that glowed a pale blue color. We stepped through, and I was suddenly surrounded by many other Ids who looked like her. One was a male with a fiery appearance. Spiky hair with a hard look on his face. We did not interact with him at all. Instead, she led me to another portal. A sign stuck in the colorful world showed the initials "WT". We entered, and we were immersed into another room. It was empty, but was lit with a white glow from above the room.
I was not sure what this woman was about to do, but I was suddenly greeted with that wonderful sound again. That humming. That exact same melody. It excited me. Suddenly, she took in a breath, and sprang out a wonderful sound. It was much like the humming sound that came from nowhere, but it came from her voice. I was enchanted. This was singing.
She sang a few verses of her song to me, and smiled as she saw the delight in my eyes. When she finished, I asked "What is it about?!"
She smiled at my joy. "That is something for you to figure out for yourself. The fun thing about music and songs is finding out what a song means for yourself." She brought herself down to my height, and said "My name is Aquarius. That is my song's name."
"Aquarius..." I liked it. "Do- Do you think that I could become something like you?"
"A song? Perhaps. Some of us are not actually songs, though. Many songs create a musical 'album'. You know how an Id can become an entire film, right?" I nodded. "One Id can become an entire album once it has been conceived by the creator. You could even become your creator's Inspiration Id."
"An Inspiration Id," she explained, "is an Id who channels ideas to the creator. You will become something very important to your creator." She stood back up. "Without inspiration, something cannot be created."
I blinked. I could become something extremely important. I could help create other Ids who I could call my friends. The thought just made something light up in me. My insides felt warm and joyous, and I could hardly contain it. After the beautiful song calmed me down, she showed me around the Music Sheet. All around there were various "genres" of music. Her specific genre had been called "symphonic metal". She did not tell me her author's name, and I never met the Inspiration Id who brought about her creation.
She offered to show me the "pop music" genre, and I was greeted with the catchy beats again. We didn't stay too long. It was crowded with a ton of other Ids who were rather bubbly, and this made Aquarius "uncomfortable". This made me laugh. We later traversed the music genre of rock. I liked it quite a bit. The stringed instrument, which she called a guitar, made some amazing sounds that made me feel rather ecstatic.
We went through practically every genre. I took note of those that I had liked quite a bit, varying from electronica, Aquarius' very own symphonic metal, pop, and the guitar-riddled rock genre. I decided to head back to my Sheet, and bidding Aquarius farewell.
Everyday after that, I would head to the Sheet of Music. I could not stay away. I became friendly with various other Ids, including a few of Aquarius' companions. They all sang their songs to me, and I was enchanted by the beauty and poetry that their creator had given them.
I met a particular Id who did not speak any words at all. Only musical notes that sounded like that humming in Aquarius' song. She told me he was an Instrumental Id, and his instrument was a violin. I was enchanted by the melody that came from his song. I had clapped and applauded when he had finished his song.
The Sheet of Music was the only place where I felt like I fit in. Perhaps it was because of the acceptance Aquarius had given me. Maybe it was because I loved the songs. I'll never truly know how I became so attached to the Sheet.
After a long day of exploring the Music Sheet without any direction, I headed back to my Sheet, and I was shocked to see my creator. He had a look of excitement and joy on his face. He mouthed words to himself and counted something on his fingers, and began writing things down.
That was when it happened. I felt something on my back. The feeling of something being etched into me. Three shapes were put onto my back that I could not see, but I could feel them. A melody flew into my head so instantly, and I was singing. The notes rang out, and the song was dark and devious. Yet, I loved it. Every single time the notes came, I felt joy. The song's music came and sounded much like that of Aquarius' song.
That very next day, when I woke, something about me had changed. I had something on my head. At first, I suspected it was more initials or something, but it was hair. Messy hair of a dark brown color cut at a medium length. I even found myself donning clothes of dark colors. I even had an actual eye color and I had grown.
Suddenly, I found myself heading to Aquarius. She was speaking with another Id, who she referred to as "Tokkata", when I had found her. She seemed confused when I greeted her, with my new appearance and all. Yet, after explaining that I had been enchanted by the violin song from the day before, she gasped.
"You can't be him!" she said in shock. "Is it really-?" I nodded, smiling for the first time in my life. It felt good.
"I must be that "Inspiration Id" after all. I have another melody in my head that seems to be begging to come out." I did not sing in front of either Tokkata or Aquarius, but I did ask them to tell me what was on my back.
"Three initials," came the red-headed Tokkata's voice. "B.F.E."
B.F.E.? "What do you think that means?" I asked.
"It must be your author's pen name of sorts," Aquarius responded. "That means it is your initials. You must come up with the name."
Days passed. And those days turned into months. I was spewing music and songs like crazy. When I'd head back home to my Sheet, I'd find the Ids of the music my author had created. It was all because of me, too. They were all different, much like every Id is. Yet, they all blended together so well. It felt nice to finally find my calling. So, after months and months of trying to think of a name for myself, I settled on three simple words: "Bolts For Explosives". I am still unsure of where the inspiration came from, but my author just about died when it came to him. He loved it.
I'm still not at the top of the Music Sheet, but the other Ids keep my head up when I'm feeling low. They show me new ideas, and I even interact with other Inspiration Ids from other Sheets. Our ideas intermix, and we end up creating a beautiful mess, even if it is not through the use of brushes. It is through the art of music. Because music is a universal language that every single person can understand. And I love being a part of it.
I started writing this a couple months ago and never got around to finishing it. Originally, it was going to be a big series about "finding yourself in the crazy world". But, I just turned it into a short story.
This was inspired by the video game Little Big Planet. I liked the idea of our thoughts being taken to another world and such. So, I took my little Id and gave it a story. It really is about myself and how I find most of my inspiration through music, and how I hope to be a musician of sorts someday.
I did reference a few pop culture things, including video games and movies and such. The most prominent references are the characters Tokkata and Aquarius.
"Tokkata" is a copyrighted song by the artist Bentley Jones on his album "UPGRADE 1.0". I do not claim ownership over it at all. I only own the character within the story.
"Aquarius" is a copyrighted song by the symphonic metal band Within Temptation on their album "The Silent Force". I do not claim ownership over it at all. I only own the character within the story.
So, please tell me what you thought of my little story! Even a little comment would be nice. Constructive criticism is always great as well.
