Prologue

"I promised myself I wouldn't dance with you tonight." His voice is so faint I'm sure only I can hear it.

"Why?" I stare into his eyes. I can't figure out what he's thinking of.

Trevor spends the time to study my face.

"I can't tell you," he glances at my lips and I swallow hard.

"Why not?"

As he traces his finger from my arm down to my bare shoulders, I try my best not to flinch.

"Because you wouldn't understand," he says with a sad smile.

My heart beat starts elevating.

"How do you know I won't understand if you don't tell me?"

He shakes his head and rests his forehead on mine.

My body stiffens when I feel his warm breath on my cheek.

"I thought I was strong. Now I'm not so sure."

One

"I do want you to know I hold you up above everyone." - Good to You

"Which one do you want?"

"Strawberry. With the creamy vanilla topping shaped like fluffy clouds," I answer.

I never really liked cupcakes. But Trevor is a huge fanatic of these little babies and I have no idea why.

I'm Ever Sonnet and Trevor is my brother. We differ only by 2 years but Trevor looks so young, it sucks when people mistaken me for the older one.

It's winter again. Both Trevor and I love this season the most. He says he likes it because he can shove snow down my clothes which is much more infuriating than it sounds. But I like it because our eyes have the exact same shade that always reminds me of winter; misty gray with specks of white here and there.

That's probably the only thing we have in common, speaking of physical is taller than me, which is good. He says if he's any shorter he'll throw away all my heels and burn them to the ground. It takes a whole lot of energy not to laugh at whatever comes out of his mouth sometimes. My hair is long and straight, with semi-curls on the edges colored pitch black while Trev has light brown hair, all messy and surfer-dude-like. I swear, girls always look at him like he's some sort of super star.

I get it, I mean, he has the perfect body type, he's friendly and sweet to everyone, his grades are alright, he does his homework and is helpful to all the teachers. He's the perfect guy, really.

To be honest, I have no clue where he gets all his good looks from because I am nowhere close. Our genes must've been mixed up or something. Or maybe my Mom's womb just drained all its baby-styling capabilities so that Trevor can come out all perfect. No, don't get me wrong, I don't look like a weirdo, and I'm not jealous of him. It's just that he looks like a demi-god and I look like… well… me.

"Here," he passes a plate with my cupcake and places his on the table.

"Thanks."

We always take the seat at the corner of the cafe, right next to the window on the maroon couches. It's usually empty at this time, which is the reason why we come in the evening. The exterior of the one floor building is made of wood in a dark shade of brown. A red banner hangs on top of the white door that says Bay's Cupcake Cafe.

"I'm really sorry about Chrissy," I pick on my cupcake with the tiny fork. I only bought it as a sign of empathy for his bad week even though I can barely swallow the whole thing down.

Trevor broke up with his girlfriend yesterday. I know her name sounds like all that but she's horrendous. But no matter how much I dislike her, I can't help but feel guilty. Because most of the time, Trevor's relationships don't work because of me.

"Nah, it's fine. She sucked anyway," Trev takes a bite of his own cupcake.

"She kept telling me how my room should be way bigger than yours because I'm older. I mean, who gives a crap about those things?" he mumbles.

"Listen, Trev. Most of your breakups are always for the same reason; me. And I don't like it."

His eyes widens as he wipes off the white butter cream from the corner of his mouth. "No they're not!"

"Yes they are."

He sucks his teeth and starts explaining. "Lisa and I certainly don't work because she's freakishly ambitious about everything. Tania was too selfish," - "Tania didn't like me since day one," I say to him.

"That is not true," Trevor points a finger at me and knocks down his cupcake.

I laugh. "What about Halie?"

"Too annoying."

"Sarah?"

"Miss Know-It-All."

"Friday!"

"Come on, even her name sounds ridiculous!" he throws his arms up in the air.

I shake my head with a grin on my face. "You're impossible."

Here's the thing about Trevor; he never wants me to feel bad about anything. Wait, correct that, he doesn't want anyone to feel bad about anything. It drives me crazy. Just because I'm his little sister, doesn't mean I can't tell the difference between right or wrong.

Trevor finishes the last bite of cupcake and pushes the plate aside. He folds his hands on the table and looks at me.

"Ever, it's not your fault my relationships never lasts longer than a milk carton's expired date, alright?"

I sigh out of exasperation. I hate it when he talks me out of stuff.

"Besides, with University just around the corner I won't have time for those things anyway."

I don't say anything.

"I just… haven't found the right one, that's all," he smiles.

Trevor puts me above everything and apparently everyone. He goes hectic when I don't tell him where I am, people say he talks about me a lot and whenever I need him, wherever I need him, a text will get him there and then straightaway. If I was his girlfriend, I probably wouldn't be able to stand his attitude either. It's not like I haven't told him to stop playing the role of an overprotective brother. He even warns ALL guys in my school to stay away from me. And then he wonders why I never have a date when it comes to school parties.

I don't know how to snap him out of it.

"Hey," his voice forces me to look at him. "Only losers like Christina wears crazy pink pumps to a movie date," he grins.

I definitely laugh at that one.
