A/N: Hi guys(if anyone's reading this)

This is my first story, and I'm really sorry that my summary sucks and the first chapter's not so good, but please give it a chance!

If you're reading this, please review - and hopefully follow too ;) - so I know that someone's reading my story! Thank you sooooo much if you read this and please please please let me know what you think!

I sighed as I waited for the lift to reach the top floor. I was in the mall on our day trip from school with my friends, who were waiting outside the cinema on the ground floor. As I stood there, I had the strangest feeling, as if I was being watched. I glanced around nervously, scanning the crowd for any faces I recognised. No-one.

Just then, the lift dinged and I walked inside thankfully. It was empty, except for a teenage boy who followed me inside. He looked the same age as me, maybe a few months older, and had a cute face with tousled black hair.

"Hey," he said, smiling.

"So... you're on a school trip?" He asked.

"Yeah, I guess you say that."

"What's your name?" He asked, before checking my name badge. "Oh. It's Jasmine."

"Jazz. People usually call me Jazz."

"Do you like listening to jazz?"

"Not really - I listen to pop music most of the time. But Jasmine's just a long name."

"It's a pretty name," he smiled. Was he flirting with me? I wasn't sure.

As I watched him, he took a packet of Malteasers out of his pocket. There was something strange about him, something that I couldn't quite place my finger on. I got the feeling there was something I should know, but my brain really wouldn't co-operate.

"You want one?" He offered politely.

"Thanks," I nodded. I reached for a malteaser, but as I was extracting my hand from the packet, my fingers brushed his and I felt a sharp electric shock go up my fingers. I pulled my hand back immediately. He must have felt it too, because he did the same.

And that was when it hit me.

You only get that kind of feeling from a certain type of people.

People whom I sometimes loathe.

People who are completely the opposite of me.

A fire-bender.

In the lift.

And he didn't even know it.

I heard the ding of the lift again, and realised we had reached the ground floor.

"Wait!" I blurted, as he stepped out of the lift, before realising I had no idea what to say next. "Um... er... actually my friends are going to be somewhere here, but I'm not sure where they are," I lied. "Could you please help me look for them?"

"Thank you."

A minute of silence passed.

"Are you going to tell me what they look like?" He asked slowly.

"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Skye has curly chestnut hair, she's a bit taller than me, and has sky blue eyes. And Daniel has dark skin, short curly hair and is a lot taller than me. And they'll both be next to each other, waiting for me."

"Is that them?" He gestured towards the cinema.

"I think so. I'm not sure, can we go closer?"

I took his sleeve and tugged him gently to my friends.

Skye was one of my best friends, along with Vicky and Rachel. Before we were sent to the mall on the field trip, our year had been split into two groups. Sadly, Skye and I were in one group and Vicky and Rachel in the other. At least we had each other, though.

Unlike us, Daniel had been split up from all his friends. He was one of those people who was friends with everyone in the class though, and as he'd been part of our class for years, we knew him very well, so we hung out with him in the mall.

However, I'd wanted to go to a bookstore, and because the other two complained loudly about going there, I told them I would go alone, and we decided to meet up outside the cinema.

"You're back," smiled Skye. "Who's this?"

"He's... um..."

"I'm Ash."

"I'm Skye, and this is Daniel. You can call him Dan though."

"I was going to say..." I took a deep breath. "He's a fire-bender."

"Excuse me? I'm a what?" asked Ash.

"A fire-bender. And we need to get you to Mike. Now."

"Actually...Mike's not going to be back till later," Skye said nervously, biting her lip.

There was a moment of silence.

"Ok... We can explain everything to Ash between the three of us, right? When Mike comes back, we'll tell him everything," Daniel assured her.

Hours later, we were sitting in Starbucks and had finished explaining everything to Ash. I'd just made a drop of water rise out of my glass to show him what I could do.

"Is that really all you can do?" He asked, unimpressed.

I glared at him. "I can do much more than that; I just don't do it in public."

"Rea-" Ash started to say.

"Guys, I'm starving," Daniel interrupted us. "You know what I want? Food! I need food!"

If that was supposed to distract me, it worked.

"Dan! You just had a large mocha with cream!" I exclaimed.

"I said FOOD. Not coffee, food."

"You know, I am kind of hungry too," Ash muttered.

"Great. Another one of them," I said, rolling my eyes.

"Fine," Skye snapped. "We'll buy you a cookie from the counter."

"A cookie?" He asked incredulously. "Come on! You two are trying to kill me."

"I am seriously tempted right now," I muttered under my breath.

"You know, if I wasn't so food deprived, I would have challenged you to a duel already," He replied, eyes flashing.

Skye turned her attention to Ash, who had been watching the whole scene with an amused look on his face.

"Meet the drama queen. And ignore the food problem." Skye added as an afterthought. "You'll get used to it."

"Just 'coz I can act better than you," Dan scoffed.

"I'm not sure that's what Skye means when she says 'drama queen'," I stated dryly, getting up to buy a cookie.

12 minutes and 23 cookie crumbs later (I count random things when I get bored), we made it out of Starbucks and started walking to our meeting point with Mike.

"Who's Mike?" asked Ash.

I ignored him, still slightly offended about his comment on my abilities.

"He's one of the older students. Some of them decided to stay behind after they finished school to work there, so they're kind of like teachers-in-training. They usually come with us on the day trips, because the teachers have other lessons and classes to teach. We call all the trainees by their first name," Daniel explained, after realising I wasn't going to answer Ash's question.

Daniel (now that he was back to normal again) started explaining the school system to Ash, with Skye interrupting every few minutes. I decided to blank them out. I had a feeling that I couldn't shake off, as if something was unusual. As I was thinking about it, I realised what was wrong.

"Hey, Ash. There's something I need to ask you," I began, interrupting his conversation with Daniel and Skye. He fell back slightly so I could talk to him privately. Dan carried on talking to Skye, so I took my opportunity.

"How did you not know about your powers for so long? Didn't your parents tell you?" I asked him quietly.

He looked at the ground, and I realised I'd hit a weak spot. "I don't have... parents."

"I'm sorry. I didn't know."

"It's not your fault."

"But... how could you not realise what you were? Why didn't you tell anyone?" I felt bad for pressing him when he was like this, but I couldn't help it.

He looked at me again. "Do you actually think anyone would have believed me?"

I shook my head as I realised the answer. "No," I said. "I don't."

We walked together in silence for a while.

"How did you know I was a fire-bender?" He asked me finally.

"I could feel it. Water-benders can sense fire-benders around them, and vice versa, if they know what they are. You had a really strong aura about you, so I knew almost straight away."

"But Daniel and Skye... they didn't know it when they first saw me."

I shook my head. "They're earth- and air-benders. They can't sense it as well as I do. It's because we're opposites, water and fire can sense each other better. If you were an air-bender, Daniel would have known it straight away, because he's an earth-bender so you two would have been opposite element-benders."

Ash tilted his head to the side. He looked kind of cute when he did that. "Is that where they get the saying from? Opposites attract?"

I laughed. "Yes. That is where they get the saying from."
