I See

I see what you think when you look at me.

Skin the color of the deepest tan

Weird clothes in a large array of colors

Hair upon my head in a most peculiar do.

I see what you think when you hear me speak.

The way I form my words against my teeth.

The accent that accompanies them as they escape my mouth

The way they resonate in the air

I see what you think when you breathe the air I've breathed.

How you smell the history of my country

The highs and lows; the blood and sweat

my culture and my heritage

When you look at me you see someone foreign

Someone who is not at all like you

If you look inside instead of me

you will realize... the opposite is true.
