A single spotlight is shining down on GIRL (DSL), asleep on a cushioned surface. She wakes and looks around, confused. Another spotlight follows PERSON as she enter (USR). PERSON is wrapped in a black cloth, only showing her face and hands.

GIRL

Who are you?

PERSON

Have you forgotten me?

GIRL

Do I know you?

PERSON

That's true. How can you forget someone you don't even know?

GIRL sits up, fully awake.

GIRL

So I don't know you?

PERSON

Maybe you do, maybe you don't. You tell me.

GIRL

What? I don't underst—

PERSON

It's all relative really. Clearly I am saying you should remember me, and yet I'm telling you it is impossible to do so. Quite the conundrum, isn't it?

GIRL

So how am I supposed to remember you?

PERSON

How bout this: Do you like to play games? I like to play games. I'm going to give you three hints and if you cannot guess who I am by the third try you will have to give me something as compensation.

GIRL

Like what?

PERSON

Does that really matter? I'm the one wounded by the fact that you do not recognize me. Don't you think I deserve a little sympathy?

GIRL

Well I guess—

PERSON

Perfect! Then we can begin. Ready? First clue: We've shared a meal together.

GIRL

How? Didn't you say I don't know you?

PERSON

You're not listening. I also said you forgot me. Pay attention. Think.

PERSON flicks GIRL between the eyes to jog her memory.

GIRL

Okay, okay. Um, maybe we met through a friend. I've gone on plenty of group dates and parties where I didn't know anyone.

PERSON

Well, that's kind of rude. What, are you too popular to care about anyone else?

GIRL

What? No! I mean—I'm not unpopular…Is that who you are? You're one of the girls at a party I went to. You pissed you're boyfriend hit on me?

PERSON

Is that you're guess?

GIRL

It's possible…so yes.

PERSON

EEEEH!

PERSON sounds like a game buzzer. GIRL holds her head and hisses in pain.

GIRL

Ow!

PERSON

Oops. Did I forget to tell you? Every time you get an answer wrong it has an adverse affect on your health. That's why I'm only giving you three guesses, so you won't suffer needlessly.

GIRL

Then I don't want to play anymore!

PERSON

Well, that's too bad, 'cuz you can't. Besides, you shouldn't stop what you've already started. Didn't your parents ever teach you that?

GIRL

Pssh! I'd ike to see them try. My parents don't get to tell me what to do. If anything, they're afraid of me. I threatened to runaway once if they didn't let me go somewhere and my mom actually cried. Can you believe that?

GIRL chuckles. PERSON watches her until she stops. As soon as GIRL stops PERSON laughs darkly.

PERSON

Sounds horrible. Second clue—

GIRL

I told you I want to stop.

PERSON

And I told you that's not possible. Think of it this way, the sooner we get through the clues, the sooner the pain will be over.

GIRL hesitates.

PERSON

Like a bandaid.

GIRL

Like a bandaid…alright, let's do it. Shoot!

GIRL jumps up from the cushioned surface.

PERSON

Second clue: We have the same birthday.

GIRL

Isn't that sweet? What, did we share a birthday at Chuck-e-Cheese or something?

PERSON

If only…

GIRL

That must be it! You were probably one of those pity invites my mom used to give out. That would explain why I don't recognize you…Ewww, that means you must have thought we were having a double birthday party. Ha! Like I would ever share a day that's supposed to be all about me.

PERSON

Is that your answer then?

GIRL

Yeah. Wait, I mean—

GIRL doubles over, grabbing her stomach and yelling out in pain.

GIRL

What the hell was that?

PERSON

Probably your kidney shutting down, or something…

GIRL

You didn't tell me—

PERSON

Final clue: I never knew my parents, just like you never knew me.

GIRL

What, are you some kind of orphan?

PERSON

Not exactly…

GIRL

I've never met an orphan, and I think I would have heard that kind of rumor at school.

PERSON

Is that—

GIRL

Wait, wait! Let me think about it for a minute.

PERSON

Fine.

GIRL

Okay, so we've eaten together, we have the same birthday and you never knew your parents…isn't there anything else you can give me?

Long pause.

PERSON

Alright, one more. We could have grown up together if…no, that's all I'm going to give you.

GIRL

Oh, come on! Ugh, this is stupid!

PERSON

Do you give up?

GIRL

No! Shut up and let me think!

GIRL paces.

GIRL

Eating, birthday, parents, growing…what do all of these have in common? How are they related…maybe…no…so far I've only guessed people I couldn't possibly be expected to deal with in a normal setting so…maybe…okay, this might sound stupid, but…are we related?

PERSON stiffens.

PERSON

You're smarter than you look, but how do you think we're related?

GIRL

Umm…cousins! Yeah, that must be it. My mom had a sister who she never speaks to anymore, don't know why. It's probably all your fault!

PERSON

You lose.

GIRL grabs her chest, dropping to her knees and screams in pain. When it stops she's breathing hard. PERSON is smiling behind her.

GIRL

But I was right! We are related!

PERSON

Oh, if only it was that simple.

PERSON pets GIRL's head, but she ducks out of it weakly.

GIRL

This isn't fair.

PERSON

I'll tell you what isn't fair! Our hearts once beat as one, you know, only mine decided to stop. We were born on the same day, in the same room, but too soon. Something went wrong and they had to choose which one of us to focus on, which one of us would survive. And only one of us did.

GIRL

Not my fault—

PERSON

Shut up! I've been watching you, watching the way you treat your family, your friends, basically anyone you come in contact with. You hurt them. You know you hurt them, but you don't even care. And the things you do to yourself, smoking, drinking, having sex with anything that walks. You're slowly killing yourself.

GIRL slumps over. Her head is facing the audience so they can see her eyes are still open and aware.

PERSON

You have people who could love you. I don't. You have people you could love. I don't. You have a life to live. I don't. You don't care about this life you were given and that, THAT isn't fair. You don't deserve this life.

PERSON takes off her cloak. PERSON is wearing the exact same clothing and hairstyle as GIRL.

PERSON

So as my reward for winning our little game, it's my turn to live.

PERSON covers GIRL with the cloak and lays down on the cushioned surface in the exact same position as GIRL at the beginning of the play.

PERSON

Goodbye. Sister.

CURTAIN.
