I know I'm different… I've always known. Everything about me is different from the other people in our little "Community". I'm the sore thumb, literally. Everyone and I mean everyone around me has the same colour of eyes, the same colour of eyes hair, is around the same height and a normal name. I however have none of that. I have ginger hair, I'm taller than everyone else, I don't have a normal name (Rosie Thorn, I used to be called Millie Brown but then I found out my real name) and last but not least my bright purple eyes. I've only ever seen one other person who didn't look like the rest. He used to live next door to me. I didn't even know he was there. When our government found out they chucked him out into the forest surrounding our town. The people he was living with who were two of our own residents got killed in front of all of us for keeping a fugitive, whatever that means. Not long after that they started to build a mile wide river around our town, they told us it was to keep people out but I'm not convinced, I think it's for just the opposite, to keep us in. Ever since that day when I was six, I've been worried what will happen to me. It's now seven years later and yet nothing has happened to me. It leads me to wonder that I am here for a reason and that reason must be very important to the High Lord.
I got ready for school as usual. I looked at my calendar it was a month before my 14th birthday. I know birthdays are meant to be a happy time but for me it only means another year in hell. I then looked at my clock and realised I only had an hour to get to school I grabbed my brown cloak and ran down the stairs and was about to run out the door when my "Mother" shouted after me, "Mill-Rosie take of that cloak you look ridicules! That is why they bully you because of that!"
"Oh and that's what I get bullied for…" I muttered.
"Rosie stop mumbling, you know hate in when you mumble!"
"Yes mother," I spat.
"Don't use that tone with me young lady! We will talk about this when you get back from school! Now give me that cloak," she held out her hand and as soon as I gave it to her she chucked it in the cupboard.
"Now go." I hesitated for a second desperate to get my cloak back, when I didn't leave she screamed at me again. I rolled my eyes and walked out the door slamming it behind me. Once I was sure she had gone up the stairs I rushed back in, grabbed my cloak, through it around my head and ran out.
Coming back from school was its usual struggle particularly when I get outside my house. It always depends if I can cross the road quick enough. If I don't they'll hit me with their cars if I do they try to hit me with rubbish. I peered round the corner, it all seemed clear but as soon as I walked out and was on the road two cars came speeding at me from my right and my left. I prepared to jump onto the car bonnets and over the other end as usual but this time I was more annoyed than usual. I turned round to face the car to my right my hands out stretched and then it happened…
A golden light shot out my hands, hitting the car and sent it flying backwards. I span round putting my hands up for the one on my left to stop but instead a blue light came out my hands freezing it to the spot along with the people inside of it. I fell down in shock and as soon as my hands touched the tarmac I felt it soften beneath me. I jumped up in shock and shook the tarmac of off me. People had now started to scream and run of to get the Highers. The Highers dealt with the worst cases the government get, the people who are taken by the Highers are never seen again. As soon as the Highers were mentioned I knew I was in trouble. I had to run; I had to leave if I valued my life. I quickly ran into my house or my little piece of hell as I like to call it. My Mother was sitting waiting for me.
"How did you get that cloak?!" she screamed unaware of the panic that was happening outside.
"Not now! I don't have time!" I screamed taking the stairs two at a time.
"ROSIE! GET BACK HERE!" she screamed walking after me. I didn't stop. I don't have much time left the Highers will be here any minute now. When I reached my room I quickly changed out of my school uniform and into my long shelve-green top, my knee length denim shorts and into my white canvas shoes. I was packing my bag with a couple of essentials when I heard someone banging on the door.
"Mum, don't answer it! DON'T ANSWER IT!" I screamed franticly packing more. The banging got louder and shouts came saying they'd break down the door if they had to. My mother who valued her house more than me ran down to answer it. I only had one more option, the window. Yes I was on the third floor, yes it was a long way down, yes I'm insane to even be thinking about it but I don't care! I've done it once before and I'm alive right now ament I? I quickly ran over to the window and tried to push it fully open, it got stuck half way but I managed to push it up. From down stairs I heard my mother scream as she was pushed out the way by one of the Highers. I took one last look at my room when I heard them on my floor. It was now or never, I ran over and put my chair in front of the door it would only delay them a bit but it would do. I then rushed over to the window and chucked by bag out the window and sat on the edge. I took a deep breath and was about to jump when they burst into my room and grabbed me. I will not go down easily, I fought as hard as I could, twice I got back to the window and twice they got me back. The one closest to my head started to shout, "Keep her still! Keep her still!" I fought hard than ever but they over powered me, next thing I knew something sharp went into my neck. Immediately I felt week, they let go of me and I dragged myself over to the window and then everything went black.
