It's been two weeks since I was introduced to the tribe. My Father is helping me gain control of my magic and I'm gaining control very, very quickly. Mello, Fabien and I are out on our daily hunt. We're doing the best we've ever done. I'd just managed to put a spell on my arrows to return to my quiver when it was empty when I heard something rustle in the tree. I stopped checking my most recent kill; I quickly clipped an arrow onto the string and fired into the tree (as I knew where Mello and Fabien were so I didn't need to worry about shooting my friends). I heard someone scream as my arrow was lost in the tree, the scream sounded distinctively like a man's. A second later the man fell from the tree, I gasped as I saw who it was.
"ROSIE?!" I heard Mello scream. I immediately turned round and started to run.
"Rosie what's going on?" Fabien asked as he was the first to reach me. I had another arrow clipped onto the string.
"Run Fabien! They've found me! RUN!" I screamed. Fabien who didn't need to be told twice ran after me. I glanced behind me to see the rest of the Highers running after us.
"S**T! MELLO RUN!" I cried as Mello came out of the bushes. I span round and shot an arrow taking out one of the forty Highers. I then pointed my hand at a tree which instantly fell down taking about another six Highers. I started to run again, it was hard work but I eventually caught up with Mello and Fabien.
"We can't lead them back to Lignea Civitatis, we don't need another massacre!" Mello panted as we quickly turned away from our usual way home. I pulled another arrow and fired aimlessly behind me, it must have hit its target as I heard a cry in pain behind me.
"Eight down!" I muttered.
After a while of running we came face to face with a cliff face (I thought they knew this forest inside out so how are we trapped?).
"WE'RE TRAPPED!" I screamed. I can't believe this! Everything has been going to well, I had almost forgotten about the Highers by the river about two weeks ago.
"We can't die! This can't be happening! We've not experienced enough! We're too young to die! WE'RE GOING TO DIE!" Fabien cried he was starting to have a mental break down.
"Not today!" I drew another arrow, aimed for the first Highers head and let go. It sliced through the air and imbedded itself into his head. Mello chucked her trench coat off, grew her arms out, gripped two Highers and smacked them together until they went limp.
"Fabien I'm going to put a spell on you knifes so they'll come back to you, got it?" I asked. He nodded (as he had calmed down) and I put the spell on. As soon as I'd finished he chucked his knifes at two different Highers and caught them as they came back. A smile was plastered on his face and I could easily tell he was happy with my little improvement. Once the last Higher had come through they started to return fire (why they waited that long I don't know). We had to franticly run around just to avoid most of the shots they fired at us. Five times I had to send invisible shields flying past Mello and Fabien to protect them from oncoming bullets and lasers.
"Let's try this again," I muttered to myself as I put my bow onto my quiver. I stretched my hands out and immediately the gold light shot out of my hands, they were the same ones as back in the city. They took out another ten Highers. I was too busy basking in my glory that I didn't notice a Higher fire at me until it was too late to get out the way uninjured. I grunted as it caught my left arm. Blood started to drip down my arm and my arm started to go slightly numb.
"Crap," I ripped of part of my blue top and wrapped it around my wound. I didn't notice a Higher launch himself at me until Mello shouted to me warning of the attack. I quickly lifted my leg up and kicked him full power in the chest. He fell to the ground and was about to get up when I took an arrow out of my quiver and plunged it into his chest. He went limp underneath it as I pulled it out and then put the arrow back in my quiver. I looked up to see only five Highers left somehow we had managed to get this far. I fired my bow again taking out another two, Fabien threw his knife taking out one and Mello's arms broke the neck of the fourth Higher. That only left one…
"Oh crap! I'm falling back! I repeat I'm falling back!" he screamed into an earpiece as he ran backwards. I fired desperately at the Higher but I missed. I kicked a rock beside me how could I let one go? Now they'll know I'm here, alive and they'll send someone looking for me.
"His voice, I recognised his voice…" I muttered as I walked over to Mello and Fabien. They were both bleeding as badly as me from where bullets and lasers had hit them.
"What are we going to do about the bodies?" Mello breathed. I moved them all over into a pile with my magic, clicked my finger and they instantly went on fire.
"The fire will stop when the bodies are gone… come on let's get cleaned up," I looked back at the burning bodies. My friends nodded as we took our eyes of the body campfire.
"We better be quick… the smell will be unbearable soon," Fabien whispered. We gave one last look at the burning Highers and then ran off.
We sat in the village hospital in our blood splattered clothes. We were all sitting in silence on single beds.
"Right Rosie top off, let's get that bullet out," the nurse walked over to me with tweezers and a metal bowl in her hands. I sighed as I took of my top revelling my skin coloured bra. I could feel my magic boiling inside of me as she tried to pull the bullet out that was lodged deeply in my arm. I clenched my fists; desperate to keep my magic inside of me, even though I'm getting lessons to keep it under control it can still be unpredictable. I screwed up my face as I felt her tug the bullet out.
"And there we go," she said sweetly as she dropped it into the bowl, "I'll just stich this up and then I'll clean all your other wounds." I only nodded as I was still trying to keep my magic inside of me. I glanced over to see Mello and Fabien being worked on by two other nurses I didn't recognise. I clenched my fists again as she started work on me once again.
"I'm sorry…" I threw myself down on my bed still in my blood splattered clothes.
"For what?" Mello sighed as she lay down on her bed.
"This was my entire fault… I could have gotten you both killed, they wanted me and would have killed you both to do it…" I muttered.
"Don't be ridiculous we're your Guardians we need to stick by you no matter what and anyway like we'd let you lose in the forest by yourself, you'd set the whole forest on fire!" Fabien laughed while locking the door. Fabien sat down beside me, put my head on his lap and started to stroke my hair. I glared up at him but I was happy that he was trying comfort me and I know he knows it. It was because of Mello and Fabien I'm now able to lower my guard but only when I'm around them, because I know they have my back and I will always have theirs. I looked over to the window only to see blackness, we must have spent around thirteen hours in the hospital.
"I'm going to bed," I whispered as I gapped my PJ's and went to the other room. When I came out Fabien had left my bed and was getting changed in another room so I climbed into my bed. Mello walked into the room I had just come out off so I was in the room by myself. I looked around the room at the place I can truly call home before I blew out my candle and attempted sleep.
