Umm... I hesitated at first uploading but I've managed to gathered all my courage to upload my work. First of all, English is my second language so I might have lots of grammar mistake (and maybe the spelling?) so I am very sorry for that. I would really appreciate reviews. Nervous, but I hope you guys enjoy reading.
Long ago, there lived a quiet girl whose life is filled with nothing but studies. Her parent are both working n successful. They want her to be like them. Thus, they would give everything to her in return for good grades. Being pampered and praised by anyone around her but never once she felt happy. She felt lonely. One night, she gazed upon the stars up high n wished she could run away and find happiness. Sometimes, she would stare motionless at a picture book that she had since child and envy the princesses who found happiness through love.
"Will a prince save me one day?"
"Will I ever receive happiness?"
She lightly pat her chest few times and close her eyes.
"I heard you have a day off, mom, dad. Me too...Let's spend the day to-"
"Great. Why don't you go to the library."
"Your mom is right. You must ensure your bright future."
She wanted to open her mouth but keeps it close. She wanted to spend their time together as family but decided to throw the idea away. She gave them a nod n went to her room to get ready to go to the library.
The smell of old books stack on its shelf at the library stings her nose. She realised of how sick she feels of studying. All she could do is sighed as she caressed the book one by one. She took out a book that tells about myths and legends that had been going on around her village and began reading it.
' The Moon Forest. '
'Long ago, villagers used to believe of a story about the forest of moon. They believed that every full moon a god will's descent from the heavens above. The god's arrival will bring bloom to every plant exist in the flower. However, the god's descendant was not to bring joy to the villagers. It was because he yearned for his lover who had died in the forest, killed by the villagers, the maiden who was cursed by a demon and was believed to bring misfortune to the kingdom if not killed. Many times the god wanted to bring destruction to the village but never once he did as his will but instead he will bring happiness. All of this was because the young maiden's last request.'
She looks at the book in disgust. She placed them forcefully back to its place and grunt.
"Who wants to throw away their will for someone else happiness!"
She whispers under her breath. Then she lowers her eyes and looked at the floor.
"That's what I'm doing..."
She said to herself, knowing how miserable she is. Happiness. She scratches her head in confused. How can a tragic love bring anyone happiness.
"What is happiness anyway.."
That night, she laid her textbook on her table as her mind wonders out the window. She stared at the stars and waved her hands in the air as if trying to reach it. Since child, she is very fond of stars. To her, it makes her happy just to see it shines without any obstacles. Tonight, there is only one star that shines in the sky. She put on her long cardigan and walks to her backyard. She sat down on the ground, hugging her knees.
"Where are your friends? I thought you'd be lonely."
She whispered to the star in the night sky.
"Hey, want to know my secret?"
She began to talk to the star as if it could reply her.
"I want someone to take me away from here... a prince?"
She then giggled at her own request. She felt ridiculous by asking a star for a prince. The cold night wind caressed her face as she closed her eyes. She tucked her long brunette hair behind her ears and leap to her feet.
"I need to go in now. My parent would be furious if they find out I'm slacking."
With a sigh, she drags her feet and went in.
The next day, her parent brought home guests. Probably from the noble family she thought, judging from how they dress and how they speak. The two families sat across each other. Like her, the noble family have a son who is an only child. He looks older by one or two years than her. He has strawberry blonde hair with a unique violet orbs. His hands and legs are long slender and fair. For the first time in her life she felt that she had met her one true prince.
Suddenly, her mother tapped her shoulder. She gave her a smile as she diverts her gaze back to the family sitting across her. Somehow she couldn't understand what they are saying as her thoughts are full of her own fantasy. When the family left, she quickly went into her room and opens her book to study. Then, with a knock her parent rushed in and sat on her bed. They insisted on her putting down her book with a wide smile which was foreign to her because they would never disturb her when she is studying.
Her mother begun. Even though she had lived for 19 years with her name, she is still not used to it. She thought that she is too shallow to be called 'Selene' as it means 'Goddess of moon' in Greek.
"Your father and I had been discussing, how about we announce your engagement to Sir Adeno's son next week, during our anniversary party?"
"Didn't you hear a thing?"
Selene's mother sighed.
"The family meeting just now was an agreement on your engagement with their son."
She looked down to her feet silently. To think that someone like her would be engage to a prince-like person. She bit her lips and knit her eyebrows.
"But mother, a person like me..."
"What nonsense are you spitting Selene? You're beautiful, smart, talented and wealthy! Every noble family in this town wants you as their in-law including the richest of them all, Sir Adeno!"
Her father started to raise his voice. Selene flinched a bit. He takes a deep breath and pulled his daughter closer.
"I'm sorry for raising my voice but we're doing this for your future."
Half-heartedly Selene gave a nod.
"Good, you continue on your studies then."
Both of her parent walked out of the room, leaving her staring dull at her book. She gently place it on her bed and walked out to the corridor. She looked up to the sky and fixed her gaze on the same star in the sky.
"It looks like you've really given me a 'prince' huh?"
She waits for a while wondering if the star could really reply her.
"But...why I still won't feel happiness?"
Tears ran down her cheek as she wipes it away with her wrist.
"I'm tired, see you tomorrow then."
She bid the star goodbye and carried herself to slumber.
After the announcement at the party, Selene is officially engaged to Sir Adeno's son who looked delighted to have Selene as his bride to be. The two of them escaped to the garden and walk side by side under the lonely moon.
"I haven't been able to introduce myself, I'm Alistair."
"Alistair?... sounds like 'star'."
Selene smile to herself. Just by hearing the word star can make this girl smile. Alistair noticed her smile and smile along.
"Do you like stars?"
"I do. They're lovely."
She then flings her both hands in the air as if she could pick the stars one by one if she does so. The both of them then sat at a bench nearby and fix their gazes at the sky. Alistair took of his coat then wraps it around Selene's small body. It made her skip a beat.
"So, why did you accept the agreement?"
Selene asked, her eyes are still fixed on the stars.
"I don't know. When I saw you back then, I thought papa and mama wanted me to marry a goddess. I was quiet shock to see how pretty you are. That made me want to make you mine I guess."
Selene said shyly. Her cheeks are burning red. She could only thank god for making the night dark enough for Alistair to not realise it. The pair then entered back the hall room filled with guess and went their way. She quickly went to her room, removing her makeup and changed her clothes to her PJ. She walks out the corridor and looks up.
"So, your friends are here today."
Selene then looks at the moon.
"It's full moon."
She paused, then looks back to the star.
"You know, I have read this story once...about a god whom descend on earth and make everything bloom. It gave happiness to the villagers because the flowers that bloomed are beautiful. But, the thing is that the god wanted to destroy that village instead but because of his lover's request he didn't do it."
Selene then tilts her head a bit and frowned.
"I wonder why he gave his happiness away for his deceased lover? If it were me, I'll hold on to that happiness."
She then thought about Alistair, about their conversation earlier.
"Will I find my happiness if I marry Alistair? Hey, star tell me... will I? canyou give me some kind of clue?"
"I guess not huh? Oh well, we'll see what will happen..."
In no time, Alistair and Selene became close. Selene's parent are happy about it. They no longer focused on Selene's studies as they are more focused on Selene and Alistair's relationship. The more Selene gets to know Alistair, the more she thinks Alistair as just a friend.
"Hey, star what should I do? I don't think I can marry Alistair..."
She whispers. She buries her pace in her palms and let out a heavy sigh.
"You can't answer that either huh?... I wish you would talk to me for real..."
She closed her eyes and breathes in the fresh air. Then, she turned around and shut the door behind her. She lies on her bed and face the ceiling. She closed her eyes, hoping that she would fall asleep and forget her trouble even for a while.
Selene was about to fall asleep when she heard tapping sound from the glass door that lead to the corridor. She rubbed her tired eyes then opened the door with not much thought. Before her, stood a young man who is beamed with light like the stars above. Who is he? Why is he here? How did he get here? Selene had no idea.
"Who are you?"
She asked him. He carved a gentle smile as he look at Selene's beautiful face. His eyes are silver and like mirrors, it reflects her face.
He said. Selene looked at him, confused. Seeing that, the young man smile and took her hand in his.
"Close your eyes."
He whispered to Selene's ear. She did as told. Hand in hand with her eyes shut, she felt as if she was gliding across the sky.
"Now open them."
She slowly raised her eyelids. She was surprised to find that she was somewhere that is not her room. They appear to be in a garden full of flowers that she had no knowledge of. When you look at it closely, you will find out that it is not a real flower but balls of white light scattered around the golden bushes.
"You are now in a world that exist in sky..a world that is occupied by stars."
Her jaw dropped. She looked around her in amazement. Smile then forms on her face.
"What do you think of this place?"
The young man said.
The pair then walked to a castle-like mansion and the young man then ordered one of the servant to set the table for their late night meal. With a nod, the servant disappeared into the kitchen.
"Why don't you rest. You must've been tired. I'll call you when the meal's ready."
The young man then lead Selene to a room. There, she was fascinated by the size of the room. The interior are decorated as if she was in a planetarium. The low ceiling looks far from the floor. It is painted with the color of a night sky.
In the corner of the room, the ceiling is painted with a picture of a mansion that what look like the ones she had seen back in her hometown. A girl is also painted looking up. Then, she realise the girl is her.
"do you like it?"
She pointed at the picture then back to herself. He gave her a nod and a smile as he walked next to Selene. He looked up at the painting of Selene with a hint of proudness in his expression.
Of course, he wanted to keep himself a mystery. He didn't want to reveal himself just yet. He decided to give her a hint. He faked a sigh.
"I gave you a prince, and yet you are still not happy."
He crossed his arms and smile mischievously at her.
"I thought if I bring you here to live with me, you'd find happiness."
As if she finally figured it out, she cup her mouth with her hands, lost of words. The young man grin as he is satisfied with Selene's reaction. He takes her hand and puts on a beaded bracelent around her wrist.
"Take this off if you want to go back. Of course it will only work if I take mine off too."
He then walked out of the room, leaving the surprise Selene.
One hour later, a lady in her mid-forty came knocking the door. She then escorted Selene into a dining room where the young man had been seated at the end of the table.
He exclaimed. He offered to pull the chair out for her but Selene politely decline. She take a seat near him and look at her plate. The food looks ordinary, she thought. Two freshly baked bunsis placed infront of her.
"Perfect for supper..does it suit to your liking?"
Selene smile sheepishly then nod. To her right, a glass of warm milk is served.
"...what's your name?"
He stared at her. After awhile, he finally digested the question.
"Call me like you always does."
"Yeah. It sounds nice."
Star smiled and sigh, relieved.
"I thought you'd never smile."
Selene then stopped giggling and introduced herself with a sincere smile that she had never thought she had.
The two chatted until the late night. Selene never felt happier. She can't wait for tomorrow.
The town is crowded with people. Selene was shock to see how the town people are all good looking. No wonder Star is good looking himself. His black hair matches his silver mirror-like orbs. His skin is very fair and flawless.
The people around them turn their attention to the foreign Selene who hanged her head down, embarrassed with the overflowing attention. Noticing that, Star grabs her hand and walk next to her.
Selene look at his face in relieve. Don't know why, but she felt a great comfort by Star's warmth. As if her fear are all absorbed away. Selene wondered why?
"Is there something on my face?"
"You kept looking at my face. Is anything on it?"
Flustered, she quickly turned away. Her eyes caught a glimpse of a beautiful gems encrusted necklace. It is a rare kind of necklace as the gems are hard to find. Thus, it is very expensive, even Sir Adeno would have a rough time buying it.
The shop keeper who was cleaning it looked at Selene and smiled. She smiled back and carried on walking.
"Are you sure about this?"
Selene knit her eyebrows obviously troubled by Star's action.
"Don't worry. I'm serious."
Star sighed then grab the box from Selene's hand and opened it. He took the necklace out then put it on her. He then smile at her.
"This is very expensive. Are sure you're giving this to me? I mean you could buy a castle with the price!"
"If it makes you happy, this is nothing."
"I'm happy but-"
Star then put his index finger to his lips.
He gave her a smile and sat back on his chair. After buying such expensive thing, not a single regret written on his face. From the looks of it, Selene knew that she is not dealing with your ordinary rich people.
"Thank you...but at least let me do something in return, like cleaning. I'm good at that. Even though I know it won't be enough.."
Hearing that, he leapt to his feet and face Selene. He look her in the eyes and gave off a shy yet faint smile.
"I want you to stay by my side..."
"Think about it okay?"
Those words kept playing in her head. "Stay by my side." If she does, then what will happen to her family? What will happen to her engagement? She lied on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Selene let out a long sigh and closes her eyes.
The last two days were the happiest in her life. Will she gave up everything just so she could embrace the happiness that she feels with Star? She doesn't know. She then sat on the bed and hugged her knees.
Suddenly, someone knock on the door and enter. It was Star. He looked at her in guilt and sat next to her without a word. Star then looked at the painting on the ceiling and smile bitterly.
"There was a girl who did the unthinkable by talking to a star. Every day she would look sad and share her trouble with it. One day, she wished for a prince. The star set his foot for the first time to the human world to find one just so he could make her happy."
He paused. Selene kept herself quiet.
"But, the result of is that the star caused more pain to her. She cried. In the end, the star wants to protect her himself, to give her happiness. So he brought her to his world. Then, he realise that he loves her, wanting her to stay with him forever. But it looks like his feeling made her suffer even more."
He then toys with the beaded bracelet around his wrist.
"He then realise the only thing to decrease her pain is..."
He stopped talking then close his eyes. Before her very eyes, he then breaks the bracelet. The beads, like slow motion fell one by one to the floor.
"...is to send her back home."
In the blink of an eye, she found herself lying on her bed, in her own room.
She quickly jump off her bed and ran to her corridor. Her tears ran down her cheeks.
"I...don't send me back..."
She said sobbing loudly.
"I want to be with you.."
She then fell to her knees then cried. Sobbing like she never had before. Her mother then barge into the room and was surprise to find her beautiful daughter crying.
"Where have you been? Why are you crying?"
"I can't marry Alistair mom.. I can't..."
"Why didn't you say so.."
Her mother let out a sigh. She quickly embraced her daughter tightly so that she will calm down.
The next morning, after a warm bath she sat at their dining table with her mouth locked. Not a single word came out of it.
"We've already cancelled the engagement with Sir Adeno...cheer up sweat-heart."
Her father said. Selene's mother then filled her glass with warm milk and gave it to her daughter.
Selene looked at the glass with a bitter expression. It somehow reminds her of Star. Then she realised that everything remind her of him.
"I must've already lost my mind."
She muttered to herself and left the table. Her parent just looked at each other and shrugged. Selene sat on her bed and stared at the sky through her window.
"Selene dear, may I come in?"
Her mother asked behind the door. Hearing no answer, she entered the room and sat next to her daughter.
"Oh, hello mom..."
"Care to tell me what's wrong? We're worry about you."
Selene look at her mother and hugged her.
"I don't know what to do anymore..."
"What is it?"
"I want to see him."
For a second there her mother was confused, wondering who the person called Star is. Before she knows it, her daughter is fast asleep in her arm. That night, Selene walked out her corridor and stare at the sky. Weird, she thought. Star is not there.
"I guess...he doesn't want to see me."
She then lied on her bed and closed her eyes. Then, her mother came into her room with a smile.
"Sweetheart, we're going out, get ready."
"I don't feel like it."
Her mother insisted. She then hand her a dress. Giving up, Selene puts on her dress and went down the stairs. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Her mother than opened the door with a brightened face.
Before Selene's very eyes, a young man stepped in wearing a black formal suit. The same young man that known as Star.
He said with a smile. Without a second thought, Selene ran towards him and wrapped her arms around him. Star was quite surprised and hugged her back.
"Seeing you like this...I'm sorry."
He whispered to her. As if giving up on words, Selene hugged him tighter and cried. Star patted her head and gave her a kiss on her forehead. Then, he softly kissed her on her cheek.
"I thought that, letting you go would made you happy...I guess I was wrong again."
He then held both of her hands and fixed his gaze upon her face.
A kiss lands on Selene's lips.
"I've let you go once but not anymore."
He then glance at her parent and gave them a determined look. Selene's parent smiled and nodded.
"From now on we'll be together, forever."
With a kiss as a seal, the troubled maiden is released from her unhappy cursed and found happiness through love. Like other fairy-tales, they both lived happily ever after.
