PROMPT: Stars
AUTHOR: Irmaida
too big
She's a girl with bigbig dreams living in a smallsmall town. She raises chickens and eggs and captures fireflies in jars (so pretty, they look like stars) but she has dreams of Hollywood and acting (how cliche) and being the first in her family to do something enormous.
So she moves to California - where all the big future stars go - and goes to Los Angeles (the angels). She signs up for a job waiting tables and goes to acting school. She's a pretty country girl with soft blue eyes and golden hair, and she knows she'll fit in.
.
The first day in Los Angeles she gets lost - the city is just so big (but not as big as her dreams, she tells herself). But she learns fast - she'll prove everyone that small town girl can become a big star (thank you very much).
She meets a new best friend. Her name is Sherry. She's beautiful - with kind gray eyes and sun-bleached brown-yellow hair and that California tan. (She looks like dreams and California on a plate.) Sherry's very helpful - she's the one that saves her when she gets lost, to be honest. She laughs at all her lame smalltown jokes and tells her, Hey, here in California, everyone can make it big!
She works hard to get noticed - she and Sherry both. One day a talent scout comes and she tries her genuine best. (Is it enough?) When the day is over, the talent scout asks both her and Sherry to come visit his studio in Hollywood and gives them an address. Prepare an audition. I see potential in you two, but I can only choose one of you. Don't be late! He wags his finger and then he's gone - but the opportunity is there. She looks at Sherry and she squeals. They make arrangements. Since she doesn't have a car, she asks Sherry to drive her - a carpool. Sherry nods eagerly - she's always been willing to drive her - and they squeal some more.
The day of the audition, she thinks, Here's my big break. And she puts on toomuchmakeup and wears a tooshortskirt because that's what the magazines and Hollywood say that stars wear, and she rehearses over and over and over. And she waits for Sherry. She wants this so much...
Except Sherry never comes.
.
(Later, she'll ironically think about those Hollywood movies in which the smalltown girl gets tricked by her falsecunningbackstabbing ohsofalselybeautiful so-called bestfriendforlife and think that she should have seen it coming from a mile away.)
But right now she only feels betrayed and hurt and she could have never (ever ever ever) imagined that Sherry would betray her. She goes outside and stares up at the sky and it's the first time she realizes that maybe this city is toobig for her (forget her dreams) and that there are no stars in the sky.
