Chapter 7

Kai stirred his coffee and added two spoons of sugar, and then he continued mixing. He was out in the open, sitting surrounded by strangers and acting completely normal. He was at Thornton's with Alyssa of all people. She had just finished her shift in the very shop and was now sitting in front of him also acting very normal while munching a chocolate pastry. She swallowed and noticed him looking at her,

"What? You want some?" she asked pushing her plate towards him. He shook his head and took a sip of the coffee and shifted his gaze to a couple sitting happily. It was the snowy haired guy from the train. He was sitting with a brown haired woman with pale skin and brown eyes who Kai thought to be his wife and in the midst of this was a small girl bouncing around. She was a beautiful child with brown hair and brown eyes which were obviously like her mother's. Kai closed his eyes and turned back to his coffee. He took another sip.

"Hey Kai? How old are you?" Alyssa asked.

"Nineteen," Kai answered. Alyssa nodded thoughtfully and turned back to her pastry which was half finished.

"Hey Kai?" she asked again.

"Hmm?" Kai asked.

"What nationality are you?" she asked curiously.

"Romanian," Kai said taking a gulp of his never ending coffee.

"You're a blond Romanian?" she asked. Kai nodded.

"What Hungarian ancestry?" Kai shook his head.

"My father was English," he answered.

"Don't your parents worry about you?" she asked. Kai shrugged,

"I don't know. I've never met them." Alyssa's eyes widened.

"What?!" Kai looked around uneasily.

"No sissy! I wanna talk to the prince! No!" Kai heard someone screech. Turning towards the sound he saw the brown haired girl bouncing towards him. He turned towards Alyssa who was smiling and pointedly looking at her pastry. Suddenly he felt a tug and looked down to see the girl holding a handful of his scarf.

"Princey!"The girl cried her eyes shining. Kai felt his face burn and he forced his mouth up into a smile. "Aw what a cute little girl!" Alyssa crooned. Kai felt his shoulders slump and he wondered what he should do. He wasn't exactly social. The girl pulled on his scarf practically choking him and he knelt in front of her assuming it was the safest option.

"What's up kid?" he asked awkwardly.

"Princey talk nice too!" she squealed grabbing his cheeks and pulling. Kai squinted and tried to pry the girl's hands away from his face.

"Ugh!"

"Oh I'm so sorry!" the woman with brown hair said grabbing the squealing girl and pulling her back. "Dusk be quiet. Those sorts of manners are inappropriate in public." she said pompously at the albino guy who was standing a little at the back covering his mouth and snickering. Kai stood up rubbing his cheeks.

"It's okay…" Kai muttered as the guy burst into another bout of laughter. Kai stared at him and the guy stopped laughing abruptly.

"Chill out man." After a moment of silence the guy sighed:"Sheesh! Stop death glaring me! It has a melting affect." Kai blinked surprised and averted his gaze towards the ground. Suddenly from the side Alyssa jumped to her feet dropping the expensive chocolate pastry on the ground. Kai internally groaned.

"You! You're Samantha! Ugh you're that brat in school!" Alyssa shouted as usual unaware of her surroundings. The brown haired woman froze and turned to face Alyssa.

"Alyssa Kurusu. You're that half Japanese brat!" The brown haired girl said in a haughty voice.

"Half Japanese brat my-"Alyssa shouted and Kai covered her mouth with his hand. She glared at him angrily.

"Forgive me for her behavior. She's a little…" Kai said making a cuckoo sign around Alyssa's head and Dusk snickered again. Alyssa fumed angrily under his arm. Samantha smiled arrogantly and eyed Kai. Kai shifted uncomfortably.

"WET WE WO!" Alyssa shouted in a muffled voice from under his grip. Kai dropped his hand from her mouth just to take her hand in his knowing she was going to do something as rash as overturn the table on Samantha.

"Oh so you trapped a date for prom Alyssa," Samantha said eyeing Kai. Kai opened his mouth to say something like they weren't dating but Alyssa snapped: "Oh so you're jealous! You can't get someone like him you desperate slut!" Kai winced uneasily.

"Never get my girlfriend in a hundred mile radius of that guy's girlfriend. Added to my to do list." Kai looked up to see that albino guy, Dusk standing beside him. Dusk was pale and had white hair with glinting red eyes; he was dressed in a T-shirt even in the freezing cold weather.

"Whatever you say man." Kai said. Dusk looked at Kai eyeing his blond hair, his eyes travelling downwards and finally stopping at his polished boots.

"Ugh are you two like married?" Kai asked Dusk trying to distract him from Alyssa who was giving Samantha the finger. It worked. Dusk's eyes widened and his jaw dropped:"Do I look married?!" Dusk asked choking on the last word. The true answer to that was no.

"Maybe?" Kai said smiling innocently at Dusk's horrified expression.

"Just because I'm with a girl doesn't mean I'm bound to her in holy matrimony!" Dusk choked looking appalled. Kai nodded soberly. Dusk pushed Kai and turned him to face the opposite way the girls were. Then he hunched over in a suspicious way and beckoned to Kai. Kai's senses shot up. Was this guy a spy or an idiot? Dusk beckoned again, this time more urgently.

Idiot Kai decided, and then leaned forward.

"I have a strict one week policy." Kai looked at him confused.

"What?" he asked. Dusk shook his head looking defeated.

"Are you sure you're a guy?" Dusk asked. Kai glared at him and Dusk grinned, "I date one girl one week. But this thing. This demon! She's a prison warden! And I'm the prisoner." Dusk sighed looking pitiful.

"Ditch her," Kai advised thinking about how weird his life was. Imagine. Him. Giving dating advice.

"I can't." Kai looked at him quizzically.

"I'm a sucker for brunettes. She's the hottest yet." Dusk said gloomily his eyes looking haunted. Kai sighed and turned to Alyssa who had just stuffed the chocolate pastry in Samantha's shirt, covering her coat and shirt in rich chocolate.

"Oh shit!" Dusk muttered.

"My coat! You ruined my new coat!" Samantha screeched.

"Shut up about your coat! My hand is burning! I actually made contact with you!"

"Do you know how expensive it is!? Of course a stupid, worthless tramp like you wouldn't know!" Samantha screamed. Most of the customers sitting around them were watching looking intrigued. Kai looked at Alyssa who was smiling looking completely unfazed but he noticed her stance tensing up.

"I saw that coat in a charity shop. It was in the window for…five pounds." Samantha's eyes widened then narrowed. "Dusk we're out!" Dusk trudged towards her sparing Kai an apologetic smile. Kai followed Dusk and stopped when reaching Alyssa.

"You okay?" he mumbled only low enough for Alyssa to hear. Alyssa looked up at him and smiled:

"On one condition."

Kai sighed: "Which may be?"

"I've been meaning to ask you. Go to the prom with me." Alyssa said.

"I'll think about it."

"I don't take no for an answer. Remember?" Alyssa whispered.

"Yeah, I recall." He walked towards Samantha, the demon, who was still seething angrily.

"I'm sorry on behalf of Alyssa. Please forgive her." Kai said humbly. Samantha moved towards him and stroked his face. Kai winced and moved back.

"I'll forgive you on one condition..." Samantha mumbled moving closer to him.

What was with girls and conditions? Kai thought angrily. Suddenly Alyssa was there in between him and Samantha. Before he knew what to say Alyssa had already slapped Samantha across her face with so much force that Samantha fell to the ground.

"Stay away from him! Didn't you hear me, you creep?!" Alyssa shouted. Samantha jumped to her feet and grabbed Alyssa's long hair and pulled. Alyssa in return elbowed Samantha in her gut but Samantha didn't fall to the ground gasping, instead she bit Alyssa's hand. Alyssa gritted her teeth and kicked Samantha hard. This time Samantha fell to the ground gasping. Alyssa glared at her.

"Stay away from him! He's mine!" she shouted causing even more bystanders to stop and watch. Kai stared pleadingly at the ground wishing it would swallow him up. Alyssa turned away from Samantha and trudged to Kai, grabbing his sleeve and pulling him away. Kai kept pace with her pulling at his sleeve. Her face reddened a little but she did not let go.

"Kai?" she asked. He looked at her.

"Mhm?"

"Why do you put up with me?"

"Huh where did that come from?" he asked pulling out his wallet and dragging her back to the café. While he was paying Alyssa grabbed his arm and hugged it. He looked down at her and his eyes narrowed.

"Why are you acting so weird Alyssa?" he asked dragging her back out. She sighed and closed her eyes.

"Just cause," she replied. Kai nodded. She was probably still hooked up on the whole fight with Samantha thing. Suddenly his cell started ringing. Bad news had arrived. He pulled out the cell and answered.

"Who is the girl?" a hard voice came from the other end of the phone. Kai froze and looked around. Regaining his cool he answered:

"What's the job?" Someone snickered on the other end.

"This call was a warning Kai. Don't get yourself involved with others."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Kai answered just as coldly.

"Oh but I think you do. Don't make me remind you what happened last time..." Kai hung up, his heart pounding and his head feeling a little dizzy. He stopped and leaned against a wall.

"What's wrong?" Alyssa asked.

"Get away from me." Kai whispered remembering the girl. Her laughter echoing in his ears. Her sweet voice. Her cries. Her voice pleading for him to have mercy. And her bloodied body.

"What!? Kai?"

"Just leave me alone damnit!" he shouted. Alyssa stared at him desperately:

"What's wrong?!" He stood up and started walking away from her. She caught up to him and grabbed his arm. He shrugged it off.

"Kai…"

"Just leave me alone Alyssa. I don't like you. I never will."

"I don't care!" she cried and grabbed his face.

"You've gone pale and you're shaking. Sit down. Calm down! What happened?" He opened his mouth to give a snappy and cold reply but his past came pouring out instead.
