The Closet

By Katje Kaase

monsters lumbered up the stairs

the closet door was agape

a passage opened in the night

escape was now in sight

arms outstretched to ward them off

the slender girl stood alone

frozen at the very top

could nothing make them stop?

tongues lashed out in greedy bites

there was no place to hide

muted screams were never heard

though her mouth was open wide

every night they came for her

but they never reached her side

he wondered why she never slept

- he didn't know… she tried
