Straw Words

By Katje Kaase

She closed the door slowly

And walked away

Not because she wanted to

But because he locked the

Door after she left

There was no way to retract

What she said and, though

Never offended, she felt he

The key no longer fit the

Lock and words were filled

With straw

A scarecrow in a field of

Grain, that stood alone

The crows still came,

Ate their fill and

The man of straw remained

She was the wind who saw

It all but could not change

A thing
