Zeus is the god of thunder, lightning, the heavens, and the king of the gods. During the Titanomachy Gaia, the Earth, gave Zeus a prophecy that if he was going to win the war he had to release the Cyclopes from Tartarus. The Cyclopes are monsters who are exactly like the gods, except they have a single eye in the middle of their foreheads; they had been locked up long ago by their father Ouranos, the Sky, before the time of the Titans. Zeus does as he is told he must and releases the Cyclopes form Tartarus, in return they give Zeus thunderbolts, Hades a helmet, and Poseidon a trident. Zeus used his bolt to imprison the Titans in Tartarus. He used his bolts again later to imprison Typhon, the youngest son of Gaia, in Tartarus when he attempted to take over Olympus. Even though he had them for a long time, Zeus' bolts had yet to be used on Earth or mortals.
There was a mortal boy, the son of a farmer, named Sebastos. He was handsome and theobject of many nymphs' affections. One particularly beautiful nymph, Iliana, he cared for her as she did him; unfortunately Zeus also fell in love with her beauty. Many times Zeus tried to obtain Iliana, but she resisted and often ran away back to Sebastos. Sebastos would not confront Zeus though as he wisely did not wish to incite the anger of the king of the gods. Zeus was angered when he found out why Iliana would deny him. He sent a large storm to the area Sebastos' family farm was, and for the first time in his anger threw down his bolts to the earth, striking trees and knocking them over onto the crops ruining part of the harvest. He struck their house and burned it down in the process killing Sebastos who was trapped by the fire. In his anger he also sends a bolt to frighten Iliana but accidentally striking a large tree and knocking to on top of her, killing her. When he realizes what he has done he mourns himself losing such a beauty and turns her into a white rose, celebrating her beauty in her death. This marked the beginning of Zeus using his thunderbolts on the earth when he was angered hitting trees, empty space, farmland, and anything on the earth. He sends out a storm and hurls his bolts to the earth sometimes taking a target, sometimes just throwing them blindly.
