Here is what happened:
When she said "it doesn't matter"
I'd asked when she wanted the kettle on
When she said "two and a half"
I'd asked how many lumps
When she said "it's my fault"
I'd asked what had taken so long
When she said "he's working late tonight"
I'd asked if she was happy with him
When she said "if I can get out"
I'd asked if she was coming next week
I did not ask:
Why are you whispering at my table
Like we are prisoners of war;
Why are your children carving a home
In my house instead of yours;
Why did you wince when my daughter brandished
Knees blue with playtime euphoria?
But when she said "goodbye for now,"
I think she meant "for longer."
