AUTHOR NOTE: I want to apologize to my readers. I'm sorry that this chapter took so long to upload. We had internet connection issues (Something was wrong with the wiring to our house) THEN somehow I completely deleted this chapter and couldn't get it back, so I had to start from scratch. Every time I tried to write it the second time around, it just didn't seem right. Hopefully you enjoy this chapter.

John stormed into the Alpha house, heading straight for the office. Inside it held both history and law books. Yanking a few from the shelf he dropped into an over sized chair. He knew these books back to front but he couldn't help but think that he missed something.

It is imperative that our race stays separate from the humans. Our very existence depends on that. Any contact with humans can mean sudden death. It is said that pack leader Marcus LeBlanc had an encounter with a human female after the lose of his mate. After this encounter Marcus became very ill and died. Thankfully he had a son who took over as Alpha. The female was also never found. It could only mean that we may carry something that could wipe out the human race. Our wolves have learned over the centuries that humans are dangerous to our kind, therefore they will never bond with a human.

John slammed the book closed and rubbed his eyes. Every book talked about a long dead Alpha and his encounter with a human and his death. He couldn't understand why his wolf would want to choose a human as his mate. He vowed to stay away from her but with the pull he felt for her, he didn't know how long it would last.

The light tapping at the closed door pulled him from his thoughts.

"Come in." He could barely contain the frustration in his voice.

Maggie opened the door, a tray of food in her hands. "You missed dinner. I figured you were hungry."

John glanced at the tray. Two plates and cups sat on it.

"I was thinking you might want company?"

"Sure thing Maggie." John saw the hopeful look in her big brown eyes and couldn't say no. Maggie wasn't bad looking, maybe she was the distraction he needed.

Beth inhaled the fresh scent of pine, and wiped the perspiration from her forehead. The air in the work truck didn't work, and she felt like she was melting. Pulling her hair up into a clip, Beth looked between the enormous house in front of her and the smaller houses surrounding it, some finished while others were just the skeletons. Beth stepped out of the car just as a lone figure was storming her way.

"I thought John said we didn't want a delivery!" Daniel yelled as he stormed up to the Sanderson Hardware truck.

Beth shivered. The icy tone in his in the approaching male's voice told her he wasn't pleased to see her. "I'm sorry."

Taking a few steps backwards, she slammed into a solid form. Swallowing hard, she slowly turned, eyes widening at the man who now had his hands gripping her shoulders. She fought the urge to reach out and trace the muscles on his chest and across his abdomen. He was tanned from days of working in the sun, and his skin was covered in a sheen of sweat. Beth's gaze lowered, locking on his loose fitting jean shorts. Licking her lips her eyes shot to his face as his lips were curling into a lazy grin.

John stopped, frozen in place. He wasn't expecting to see Beth step out of the truck. A nervous smile plastered on her pace. Her scent tickled his nose causing his wolf to perk up. He watched as her eyes took him in before landing on his face.

"I'm sorry. I know you said you didn't want a delivery, but it's the least I could do." Beth licked her dry lips, noticing John watched every movement she made. "Besides, it came in a few days ago and you never came in to pick it up. You were adamant about needing the material, so I wanted to get it to you as fast as possible."

John looked over her head and nodded. Daniel lead others to the truck to begin unloading the supplies. He allowed the feel of her soft skin beneath his finger burn into his brain. Running the tips of his fingers down her arms, he watched as goose bumps broke out across her body. "Thank you." John's eyes bore into hers searching for something explain the connection he felt. Hoping he could find something that would make these feelings worth it.

Beth worried her lip and shifted uncomfortably. Unable to bear it any longer, Beth looked down breaking eye contact. Peaking back up through lowered lids she saw the look of satisfaction cross his face.

John reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. "When's your next day off?"

"Saturday."

Reaching around her John slide her phone from her back pocket, all to aware of the way their bodies were pressed together. He saw the blush creeping into her cheek, her breath hitched and eyes closed. Instantly, he knew this was a bad idea. Programming his number into her phone he put it back into her pocket.

"Call me."

Beth knew the instant he stepped back. She felt as if she could breath easier. Opening her eyes, she realized he was looking over her head. Glancing over her shoulder she saw a young brunette and if looks could kill, Beth would be dead.

"You what?" Chase roared. "Are you out of your mind?"

John looked at his Chase, a sheepish grin on his face. "I figured, what's the worst that could happen?"

"You could die!" This time it was Deanna to raise her voice. "You know as well as everyone else what could happen if you were to get involved with a human John."

Looking at his sister in law, John raised an eyebrow before his attention was back to his brother. "I know you think I'm stupid and I can't for the life of me understand why. My wolf wants her. Hell I want her."

Chase paced his study, running both hand through his hair. "John you can't do this. You're an Alpha now." Turning his attention on his brother, his eyes narrowed. "As an Alpha there are laws you must obey and enforce. Keeping the humans out is one of them. I'm sorry John but I just can't allow you to do this. She is just a human, find yourself a…"

John jumped up, cutting his brother off. "You'll do nothing." Biting back a snarl, he pointed his finger at Chase. "I know I screwed up and involved myself in your relationship with Deanna. I'm sorry about that brother, but I also helped you get her back and protected her when you were down." Taking a calming breath, John dropped his hand. "I'm just asking you to give me some time, to see what happens. If she is the one for me, I have to give us a chance."

"This relationship could be fatal."

John saw the turmoil on his brother's face and shrugged. "I'll have to be extra careful then"

With a nod of Chase's head, the energy in the room shifted.
