The Elite
Episode I- The Masked Bandit

OUTSIDE THE BANK

The security guard hears a slight rustling in the nearby bushes. Turns to investigate, and is kicked in the side by Scarlet. Terrified, he reaches for his weapon, which Scarlet kicks away. Scarlet then draws his keys from his belt.

SCARLET
(emotionlessly)
Lights out.

Scarlet knocks the guard out with the butt of her dagger and the screen goes dark.

THE ELITE'S LAIR

A newspaper stating that the bank has been robbed is thrown onto the table by Wink.

FIREFLY
What do you make of it, Wink? Shifter?

WINK
(Scowling)
Bad news.

FIREFLY
(nodding in agreement)
Judging by what the security guard claims, the thief moved with unnatural speed and appeared out of nowhere. Could be the start of something big.

WINK
(Determined)
That is, if we don't put an end to it now.

SHIFTER
How would we do that? We don't even know who this "masked bandit" is, much less where she's going to strike next.

WINK
(Smirking)
So, we'll just have to find out.

SHIFTER
How are we going to do that? Check to see if we have any files on her?

FIREFLY
(Shaking her head begrudgingly)
Already checked. Apparently, she hasn't done anything.

SHIFTER
(Muttering)
At least, not that we know of. Someone like that would be impossible to identify when they aren't in costume.

FIREFLY
I suppose that the best thing to do currently is to investigate the scene of the crime.

WINK
(Smacking her fist into her palm)
Then what are we waiting for? Let's go.

SAM'S SALOON

Havoc walks into the saloon, scowling and scanning the ruffians at the tables.

BARTENDER
(Not looking up)
What can I do for you?

HAVOC
(Grimacing at the stench of the bar)
Do you know where Scarlet is?

BARTENDER
(Looking up)
Oh, it's you, Havoc! Always a pleasure to have you here. Want to have a drink?

HAVOC
(Scowl deepening)
I won't drink any of that poisonous slime, scum. Now answer my question!

BARTENDER
(Unfazed)
No need to be rude, big guy. She's right over there, table three. Not very punctual, are you? She's been waiting there for half an hour.

Havoc walks over to the table, nodding at Scarlet.

HAVOC
(No longer scowling)
You have the... package, I trust?

Scarlet nods and places a black briefcase onto the small, stained table. Havoc opens it a crack to ensure that it is authentic.

HAVOC
(Pleased)
Well done, Scarlet. You may prove to be better then the others that I've hired. You will receive your pay, as promised.

Havoc takes a small wad of cash from the briefcase, giving it to Scarlet. She receives it with a slight nod.

HAVOC
Meet me again in a week, same place same time.

BARTENDER
A little advise, Scarlet: arrive an hour later. We all know he will.

INSIDE THE CITY BANK

FIREFLY
(To police officer)
So, is there anyone we can talk to to find information about the recent robbery here?

OFFICER
(Bluntly)
Afraid not, Firefly. We don't know much about the robbery yet. I could tell you all that we know, but it's not much.

WINK
Is there any footage of the robbery from the security cameras?

OFFICER
Cameras were rendered useless by the Masked Bandit. She sprayed them with black paint. We caught a couple images of her before then, but nothing helpful.

SHIFTER
Have you ever heard of this bandit before? We don't have any information on her.

OFFICER
(Testily)
None. If you don't, how could we? We only know that she's about five foot three, is good at stealth and stole fifty grand from the City Bank.

FIREFLY
(Hurriedly)
Just one more question. Do you know of any nearby hangouts of villains and thieves? Anywhere we might be able to get some leads?

OFFICER
(Skeptically)
Well, there's a place about five blocks from here that's just crawling with lowlives. It's a bar called Sam's Saloon.

SHIFTER
(Brightly)
Great! Should we go there now, Firefly?

FIREFLY
No time like the present. Let's go.

SAM'S SALOON

The Elite walk over to the bar, where the barkeep is wiping the inside of a cracked mug with a greasy yellow rag.

BARTENDER
(Shocked, glancing up in surprise)
Elite! What are you doing here?

WINK
(Sarcastically)
What? Are we not welcome here?

FIREFLY
(holding up a picture of Scarlet)
We came here for information on a villain. Recognize the girl in this picture?

BARTENDER
(Shaking his head)
Never seen her before. And even if I did, I'm no squealer.

WINK
(Grabbing the bartender by his shirt and pulling him over the counter)
Oh really? Well, we're going to have to get this information one way or another. You want to do this the easy way or the hard way?

BARTENDER
(Frantically)
I know you hero types! You wouldn't hurt me, even if your life depended on it.

FIREFLY
(Knowingly)
Oh, but Wink's different. This is just her nice side. You'd hate to see her when she's mad. Ever try to fight what you can't see?

WINK
(Tightening her grip on his shirt)
I'm getting mad...

BARTENDER
(Terrified)
All right! All right! I'll talk. Scarlet, that's the girl, and Havoc were here just a few hours ago. They turned right on their way out.

WINK
(Narrowing her eyes)
Anything else you know?

BARTENDER
(Nervously)
Well, uh, Havoc's her boss. Pays her twenty percent of all earnings. Scarlet's only about the fourth hired help that he's gotten, but the only one he has any confidence in. They're going to meet back here in exactly a week.

WINK
Are you sure that you're telling us everything? Nothing else that we'll need to know?

SHIFTER
Do you know where Havoc's hideout is? Scarlet's?

BARTENDER
(Swallowing)
Havoc is said to live just outside of the city and in some old abandoned wooden shack.
(sarcastic)
And he says that this place should be condemned.

WINK
(Letting go of the bartender)
Everything you say had better be true, scum.

SHIFTER
What about Scarlet? Know anything about her?

BARTENDER
No. Rarely talks, never takes off that mask of hers and always gets the job done, as far as I know. She comes here to see Havoc and that's the only time I've ever seen her.

WINK
(Furious)
"Never seen her" he says "not a squealer" he says. How can we believe anything he's saying now.

FIREFLY
Because, as sad as I am to admit it, it's all we got.

SHIFTER
(Gesturing at the terrified bartender)
And if I were in his position, I would tell the truth.

WINK
(Smirking)
True. Now let's go bash some skulls.

HAVOC'S LAIR

SHIFTER
This can't possibly be the place that the bartender was talking about, can it? I mean, no one's been in here for years!

WINK
(Infuriated)
That lying worm! I'll show him a thing or two...

FIREFLY
(Reasonably)
We've barely looked. We haven't given this place a chance.

WINK
(Muttering)
Well, if this isn't the right place, that bartender is going to get it.

The Elite Defenders continue to search the place, looking mainly at the walls and deeper in the old shack. Shifter looks down, seeing a set of footprints larger than their own.

SHIFTER
(Pointing)
Look! Footprints!

Firefly followed the footprints, witch ended at a dusty wall.

FIREFLY
There must be a hidden lair behind that wall! The bartender must have been telling the truth.

SHIFTER
Do we search for a secret panel or something?

WINK
(Grinning and cracking her knuckles)
Why would we have to do that?

With a single blow, Wink smashes the wall where the footprints end. Sure enough, there's a secret passage behind the wall.

WINK
(Smugly, to Shifter)
Well, what are you waiting for? Ladies first.

SHIFTER
(Scowls)

FIREFLY
(As she descends the stairs that lead to the secret passage)
Come on you two. We have a case to solve.

IN THE SECRET PASSAGE

Havoc is amusing himself by counting the money that he received from the heist when the Elite enter the room.

FIREFLY
(Leveled)
You're outnumbered, Havoc. Surrender the money, now.

HAVOC
(Sarcastically)
Like you ever thought that would work.

WINK
(Smirking)
It's the hard way, then. Good.

FIREFLY
(Blasts green lasers from the palms of her hands)

HAVOC
(Blocks the attack with his double-headed axe and flings a wooden chair at Firefly, whose lasers destroy before it reaches her)

WINK
(Disappears)

SHIFTER
(Shifts into a leopard and leaps at Havoc)

HAVOC
(Smacks Shifter away with the flat of his axe blade)

FIREFLY
(Continues to blast Havoc with her lasers)

HAVOC
(Uses a mirror to reflect the beams, then drops the now red-hot mirror)

FIREFLY
(Cries out in pain as her laser grazes her upper arm near her shoulder)

FIREFLY
(Lands, gripping her wound and grins as she sees Wink, who is invisible to Havoc, grab the table and smash it over Havoc's head)

HAVOC
(Collapses as the table shatters around him)

WINK
(Grinning and picking up the suitcase of money)
Done and done.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

CHIEF
I'm glad that you were able to stop Havoc, Elite, but what about the rest of the money? A small part of it is missing.

FIREFLY
Yes, we were unable to catch Havoc's accomplice, the Masked Bandit, also known as Scarlet. He payed her a percentage of the money that was earned form the City Bank heist. She's apparently quite elusive.

WINK
They've been elusive before, but we have still been able to catch them. Don't worry, Chief, we'll catch her. She won't be any different from the rest.

FIREFLY
Has Havoc said anything about Scarlet?

CHIEF
(Shaking his head)
Not a word.

SHIFTER
Hopefully he'll talk soon.

CHIEF
(Sighing)
I'm afraid that you shouldn't get your hopes very high, Shifter. We don't appear to be able to get anything out of him.

FIREFLY
We'll keep our eyes open for her. She is a very dangerous criminal who will, no doubt, strike again.

CHIEF
(Relieved)
Thanks for everything, Elite. I don't know what we would do without you to help us to protect our city from crime.

WINK
(Winking)
We're happy to help, Chief.

HAVOC'S CELL

Havoc sat on his bench in his cell, glaring at the cell's barred window as if he was expecting someone. Then the Elite strode over to his cell.

HAVOC
(Flatly)
You're wasting your time, heroes. I won't talk for the police, and I won't talk for you.

FIREFLY
Why not, Havoc? Don't you think that Scarlet would talk if she was caught?

HAVOC
(Laughing mirthlessly)
You think you know everything, but in fact you know so little. Scarlet wouldn't betray me, and I won't betray her. You think that all villains are the same, that they only care for themselves? You're wrong.

HAVOC
(Laughing again)
Besides, you'd never be able to capture Scarlet. I don't care what you think, but you'll never manage to put the likes of her in a cell.

WINK
(Haughtily)
Yeah? I'd bet anything that a couple of days ago, you'd say the same thing about yourself. And yet here we are now.

HAVOC
(Smirking)
True. But you won't be able to keep me in one.

FIREFLY
(Narrowing her eyes)
Don't try anything stupid, Havoc. This place has the best security in the city.

HAVOC
(Smugly)
Oh, I won't try anything stupid.

HAVOC'S CELL (NIGHT)

Havoc sits alone in the near-black of the cell, the only light from the moon, which casts bands of silver onto his cell floor. A shadow suddenly appears on the floor, blotting out the light.

HAVOC
(Smugly, glancing at the figure in the window)
Oh, hello, Scarlet. Your a little late, aren't you?

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Two officers stand guard near the exit, when red lights flash and an alarm sounds. The officers rush to where the prisoners are held.

OFFICER II
(Breathless)
Who broke out?

OFFICER III
The prisoner Havoc! (Louder) Havoc has escaped!

UNKNOWN CELLAR

Havoc sits in a small metal chair, head bent. Scarlet leans against the wall, sharpening her dagger with a stone.

HAVOC
Scarlet, I have a new mission for you.

SCARLET
(Looks up)

HAVOC
(Lifting his head)
I want you to assassinate those superhero scum, the Elite.

SCARLET
(Shaking head)
Not my style.

HAVOC
(Laughing)
"Not your style?" You must have a better excuse than that.

SCARLET
(Tilts head)

HAVOC
(Tauntingly)
You know what I mean, Scarlet. You're afraid. You don't have the guts to face the Elite, do you? You know that you won't be able to beat them.

SCARLET
(Shaking her head)
Not gonna work.

HAVOC
What isn't going to work?

SCARLET
(Simply)
Insulting my pride.

HAVOC
(Growling)
Just do as I ask.

SCARLET
(Shakes head)

HAVOC
(Lifting large wad of cash)
What if I give you some incentive?

SCARLET
(Snatching the cash from his hand)
Maybe.

HAVOC
(Grinning)
Good. Meet me back here in two hours when you have finished them.

THE ELITE DEFENDER'S LAIR

Shifter and Wink are sitting at the table, joking with one another.

(Collective laughter)

WINK
(Laughing)
And did you see the look on that bartender's face? I thought that he might wet himself!

SHIFTER
Seeing as how frightened he was, maybe he did!

(More laughter)

Firefly walks in.

FIREFLY
(Seriously)
I put together everything we know about Scarlet in a file. I searched that bar, Sam's Saloon, for any extra intel on her, but found nothing. Apparently, she's new to this kind of work.

WINK
You sure? She does awful good for a rookie.

SHIFTER
(Walking over to Firefly)
She could have been a thief-for-hire in some other place.

FIREFLY
(Shrugging)
I agree. She could be from some other city, or even country. We'll have to look further into that.

(VOICES FADE AS THE CAMERA PANS OUT TO SHOW THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING)

SCARLET
(Scarlet picks the lock on the door as quietly as possible. She then enters the building without a sound, slipping though several quiet corridors and rooms. Finally, she enters the room the Elite Defenders are in. She is on a catwalk, about eight feet up, overlooking the heroes, who are all engaged in conversation.

SCARLET
(Gripping the hilt of her dagger, Scarlet leaps down, targeting Shifter)

SHIFTER
(Spotting his attacker, ducks out of the way)

SCARLET
(Scarlet lands on her feet and turns to face her foe. She slashes out with her dagger)

WINK
(Catches Scarlet's arm before it makes contact with Shifter)

SCARLET
Scarlet wrenches her arm out of Wink's grip, then slams into her enemy with her side. Pinning Wink down, Scarlet poises her dagger above Wink's exposed throat. Scarlet hesitates a moment to long.

WINK
(Thrusts Scarlet off of her)

SCARLET
(Is thrown into a wall, shakes her head from the shock of Wink's powerful blow)

FIREFLY
(Now flying, shoots lasers at Scarlet, who nimbly dodges the blasts.)

SHIFTER
(Transforms into a mass of vines, tying Scarlet down)

SCARLET
(Tries to cut through the vines)

SHIFTER
(Transforms back into a human, wounded slightly)

FIREFLY
(Blasts Scarlet in the arm with one of her lasers)

SCARLET
(Cries out in pain, then darts out of the room through the door)

THE ELITE DEFENDERS
(Rush into the next room, only to find it empty and soundless)

UNKNOWN CELLAR

Havoc is sitting in the same scratched blue-gray metal chair as earlier. He jerks up his head when Scarlet enters the room, holding a badly cut arm.

HAVOC
(Prodding)
Well, Scarlet? Was the mission a success or a failure? Did you assassinate the Elite Defenders?

SCARLET
(Shaking head)
Negative.

Havoc is overcome with rage, then stands and paces to compose himself before speaking.

HAVOC
(Sighing heavily)
I suppose that I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. No one else has ever succeeded at assassinating them, why should you be any different?

HAVOC
(Looking at Scarlet)
You are dismissed. You do your job well, other then this failure. I trust that I will see you next week at Sam's Saloon, as promised?

Scarlet
(Nods)
As promised.

Darkness consumes the screen.
