Chapter 1-Mundane No Longer
Giorgio had known a relatively quiet life after his parents' demise, and even though neither his mama or papa kept anything from him, they never once mentioned that he had inherited their sweet shoppe. Giorgio lived a comfortable life selling products and investing stocks for others as an entreprenuer at home. He existed on his own schedule and had a lively social life with friends as he played basketball, swam, cycled and bowled. Often on the weekend, he would dance in nightclubs, but never drank one ounce of alcohol. Strangely enough, a man of his calibre didn't have a mate as of yet, but he had been savoring the single life for quite some time.
Everything began to change once Giorgio had gone into his attic and started looking through legal documents. There had been a will from his mama and papa granting him ownership of his parent's candy store. It hadn't been opened for years and was in such a state of disrepair that he felt reopening it would be a risk. Yet, in his heart, he knew that sprucing it up and refurbishing it would've been in his parents' wishes. So, reluctantly, he began to renovate it and began making neccessary improvements to it before opening it to the public as well as making his family's famous confectionaries.
It had been a typical day before officially opening the doors to Papi's Sweet Shoppe. The caramels were nearly done cooling on their racks and the smell of freshly baked brownies wafted through the air, tantalizing passersby. It was the start of Lent and many people had given up sweets, but there were still customers coming in just to partake of the ambrosial aromas.
'When are you opening ?', many would-be patrons asked.
'One more day. Just a few touch-ups here and there and all goodies will be on sale.', Giorgio would say with a classy, charming smile. He oozed charisma and his laughter and singing could be contageous. It seemed that since the Sweet Shoppe was on its way to becoming officially open to the public that the town was becoming a happier place little by little, and Giorgio had been the catalyst in its transformation.
Chapter 2-Little Helpers
Giorgio wiped some sweat off his brow and took a swig from his water bottle. Making treats could be hard work, but Giorgio had never been one to slack off in his duties. Exhaling deeply after a day's worth of work well done, he stood back and admired how the store sparkled and shone and the candies dazzled his eyes. He was certain that these iridescent jewels would attract customers from all walks of life and couldn't wait to begin business.
All of a sudden, Giorgio was certain he saw something tiny darting around one of the jars of malted milk balls. Curiously, he approached what he thought was a mote of dust floating on a sunray, but it was a faerie. He grinned at Giorgio and introduced himself. 'Greetings, new Master. I'm Rocky. It's been so long since we've had a human in our domain. Such a welcome change.', Rocky said. Rocky was multicolored in attire as well as his hair, and his eyes were a bewitching emerald green. From what Rocky had said, Giorgio pieced together that this young faerie had known Giorgio's parents at one point and time.
'The pleasure is mine, Rocky. You can call me George if you like. Are there more of you here ?', Giorgio questioned.
'There are dozens more of us.', Rocky answered, with a gleaming grin. Placing two fingers together in his mouth and blowing, he gave a shrill whistle. One by one, the faeries all fluttered out; a rainbow of massive proportions. Also, the King and Queen of the Fae introduced themselves and the myriad of their kind.
'I had no idea there were so many of you.', Giorgio answered in a near hushed tone. His amazement could barely be masked. Neither mama or papa had mentioned little people helping, but he knew the secrecy was worthwhile.
'Like your parents, you're the only one that can see us. Other humans can't. They don't have the gift that you bear.', Rocky explained. Pixie, Maltball, Piroette and the others were positively tickled that they would be helping a human again and the peaceful coexistence they had shared with human kind would perservere.
'We have others similar to us, too. They're elementals though. They're the ones that keep the balance of nature.', Cindy Cotton Candy explained, straightening her puffy skirt.
'Yeah, but some humans make it hard for us to do so.', Sassyfrass chimed in. The little pixies alongside her nodded sadly. King Ferris Fennel concurred that he was happy that there were rare humans like Giorgio that cemented the balance and that he was honored to keep the sweets in proper order while he was away.
'So long as we can bring happiness to the humans who arrive here, we've done our job properly.', Queen Jujubee said, her glistening smile lighting up the room. Just then, Giorgio's first customer popped in. It was a woman he hadn't seen since his college days. Her name was Natalie Belize.
Natalie Belize was the 'one who got away', or more aptly, the 'one who never knew about his crush on her'. He had never found the stamina, backbone or courage, let alone time to say what he really felt to her when he was studying to become a marketing major. He had done so, Magna Cum Laude, and even had a PhD.
'George ! It's been so long ! How have you been ? You look tremendous.', Natalie said, her smile igniting the room. She seemed to have a golden halo around her, shining brighter than the sun. Then again, Natalie was always a bright point of light in a dark world. George stammered at first, feeling his heart palpitating but the faeries around him gave him confidence and poise.
'I have never been better. It's been forever since I saw you. You look even more breathtaking than before.', he commented. His eyes scanned her fingers for a ring; thankfully there was none to be found. Natalie flouresced at Giorgio's compliment.
'Anyone special in your life ?', she asked, which almost took him aback. Straightening himself up, he cleared his throat.
'Um, no. No one. I can see you're free as well. Hard to believe.', Giorgio said, blushing himself. She looked around at the myriad of candies, jerkies and other treats the sweet shoppe had to offer and decided a bag of Jelly Babies was calling to her.
'I'll take some Jelly Babies, ooh, and some Jammie Dodgers.', she said.
'Tremendous choices. Some of my favorites. I was wondering, are you going to be in town this evening ?', Giorgio questioned.
'Yes, and I don't live too far from here. Are you asking me out on a date ?', Natalie beamed, her response chipper and flirty. Giorgio was practically turning cartwheels, dancing the Hora and doing backflips in his mind.
'Yes. I'll give you my number.', Giogio said, his hands shaking slightly. He fumbled for his cell in his pocket and swiped it open, and Natalie did the same. The two exchanged numbers. After closing the transaction, they said their farewells but both of them knew it was the start of a beautiful relationship.
Chapter 4-Advice from the Faeries
Giorgio hadn't been on a date in years and his dealings with the opposite sex had been few and far between. So the fae, small and tall, decided to give him a few 'pointers' about what women really liked and what made them tick. As he was in the bathroom having his hair slicked back to make him look even more attractive than he already was, he said, in a rather subdued way,
'I can't believe I am taking advice from faeries.', George muttered.
'Hey, if it weren't for us, you wouldn't have even spoken to her.', Russel pointed out, perhaps a bit bluntly. Hershey elbowed him a bit, sensing the comment probably harmed Giorgio's feelings. However, he was none the worse for wear and was emboldened by what the faeries told him. Before long, he looked even better than he had before and smelled intoxicatingly of Axe Peace. Giorgio kept his shoulders back and his smile wide. He was a brand new man, full of confidence. Natalie was going to have her socks completely blown off once she saw the new, improved Giorgio 2.0.
Straightening his tie, Giorgio approached Natalie's door and rang the bell, waiting for her to approach. Once she opened the door, Giorgio nearly had to retrieve his jaw from the concrete porch. Natalie was smoking in her little black dress and hair up in a french braid tied off with a black rose. She had a little make up but really didn't need a lot of it since her beauty was natural. Giorgio felt his knees knock ever so slightly, but he kept his posture tall and proud. He offered his arm and escorted her to his car.
'This is such a change of scenery. You're so thoughtful and gallant. I thought chivalry was dead, but now I see, thankfully, it isn't.', she blushed at his selfless gesture and kindness. Giorgio had been raised to be thoughtful of others, especially women. He could feel himself falling for her the more he learned about her and how much they actually had in common. They shared many of the same interests and often found themselves finishing each other's sentences.
'What lead you to opening up the old sweet shop again ?', Natalie asked.
'I felt compelled to add some sweetness into the world. Sure, it's a small gesture, but doesn't the world need a little sweetness ?', Giorgio asked. Giorgio hadn't noticed that he had been holding Natalie's hands the whole time. They looked down at each others' hands and blushed in unison.
'That's very laudible. What do you plan on doing once you're too old to keep the business running though ?', Natalie asked.
'That's why I wanted to talk to you. I was wondering if you wanted to partner with me. I don't know how long the sweet shop will stay open long after I'm gone from this world, but at least together it'll make the endeavor easier.', Giorgio said. It was only their first date and already, he was proposing to her.
'It's a bit early to think of moving that far ahead but I can help you keep all the accounts in order. Let's just see where this leads.', Natalie said. They could already feel the chemistry pulsating between them. It was unlike anything Giorgio had felt before. He had heard songs about love and written poems on it but never experienced it. Now he could finally understand what the troubadours and bards had meant all this time.
Chapter 6-How Sweet It Is
After a year of courtship, Giorgio and Natalie married at last. She mentioned to Giorgio that at the first, she thought that maybe she was losing her mind, but she had seen small creatures in the shop, helping with the displays and other small chores. The store was always clean, and now she knew the reason why.
'So, you could see the faeries too ? From the very start ? Why did you keep this secret from me when you know we are open about everything ?', Giorgio questioned during his first night with his beloved after they had made love so vigorously and passionately. They were now curled beside each other, resembling an incarnate Yin and Yang.
'I thought you would think I was cuckoo. I had a feeling that you had the same ability as I did, but I wanted to wait until we were finally together to tell you everything.', Natalie confessed. Giorgio held her close to his heart.
'Please don't wait to tell me something so important ever again. Even if you think I might turn you away or have you picked up by the men in white coats, I wouldn't. I am too enamored of you and bedazzled by you to do so.', Giorgio said. Nothing much had to be said after that moment, since Natalie's passion was so moved that she and Giorgio spent many more hours until the sun rose making love until they fell asleep to the sound of the birds merrily chirping their summer songs.
Over the years, Giorgio and Natalie had a boy named Nikos and later they had a little girl named Daphne Anne. Nikos had been named after Giorgio's grandpa, and Daphne had been named after Giorgio's grandma and Natalie's mother. The entire family would come on holidays and other special occassions and spoil their grandchildren, but not to the point that they would be unbearable brats. The children knew the difference between need and want as well as what it meant to be privilidged versus being insufferable yuppies.
From the very beginning, the little ones could see and commune with the faeries that were in the Shoppe. Only they knew why these creatures had found sanctuary in this place, where they could get the sugar they needed to survive and thrive while also keeping the balance between magic and mundane equalized. Little miracles would happen every now and then but only the Popidapolous family was aware as to where these miracles truly came from.
As Daphne and Nikos grew, they discovered that the fae did more than keep the Shoppe spic and span, but they kept them protected from any harm that could in some way incapacitate them. Of course, the faeries couldn't do much good against bullies, but they did have helpful hints to keep bullies at bay. Most of the time, they were simply left alone, but they couldn't have loftier friends. Someday, the Shoppe would be theirs' to steward once their parents had retired. For the present, they loved interacting with the faeries and hearing about their adventures inside and out of the Shoppe and how their lives differed from that of nature fae or that of mischevious nixies and pixies. Most fae were benevolent, but there were a few that could be mean-spirited. They were few and far between, but the main way to keep them on the straight and narrow was to be sure they had a steady supply of sugar, which the Shoppe had plenty of. They adored the faeries and the faeries adored them, relishing their caretakers' ambition and contageous grins as well as joie de vivre. With human beings such as these the world was in grand hands of becoming a better place, one piece of confectionary at a time.
