DOLL INSANITY

BY: CHEYENNE WEISSER

Scene 1

[We open in a living room. There is a portrait of a man and a young woman above a marble fireplace. The furniture is elegant and classy. On the chair is a man, reading a book. Two girls are sitting on the floor, a plate of cookies and a porcelain doll next to them. There is a set of double doors on the right, and a single archway on the left.]

MARIA:

Lily! Look at my new doll! Isn't she pretty? [MARIA holds up the porcelain doll that looks like the other girl she is with]

LILY:

She's really cute. [nervously] Did your dad get it for you?

MARIA:

She's my favorite doll. She actually kinda reminds me of you.

DR. ZIKAR:

I know how much my daughter adores you Lily, so I thought she would like it.

MARIA:

Yep! Lily is my favorite person!

LILY:

I'm honored. You're my favorite person too.

MARIA:

Really? Great! You should get a doll that looks like me then! Then we'll have a matching set.

LILY:

You know, I'll never understand your obsession with dolls. You're the same age as I am.

MARIA:

You have your hobbies, I have mine.

LILY:

Fair enough.

DR. ZIKAR:

Maria, why don't you go get the other dress that came with the doll.

MARIA:

Okay! Lily stay here! You're going to love this dress!

LILY:

Alright, be back soon.

[MARIA exits through the archway on the left stage.]

DR. ZIKAR:

How are you today Lily?

LILY:

I'm fine.

DR. ZIKAR:

Are you taking your medicine?

LILY:

I don't see how that's any of your business.

DR. ZIKAR:

It is my business. If the medicine I've prescribed you doesn't work then what does that make me look like? A FOOL!

LILY:

Then save it for the next appointment! This isn't a therapy meeting! I'm here for my friend, not you!

DR. ZIKAR:

Such an ungrateful brat. Do you even know what your parents are paying to make sure you don't snap and kill someone else?

LILY:

I didn't kill anyone and you know it!

DR. ZIKAR:

I don't know a thing. All I know is that you are an insane little girl. And my daughter deserves a much better than some broken doll.

LILY:

I am not a doll. And I'm certainly not broken.

DR. ZIKAR:

We'll see about that.

[MARIA enters from the left stage and holds up a doll dress.]

MARIA:

I found it Lily! Isn't it such a pretty dress?

LILY:

Gorgeous. It's a perfect dress for a doll.

DR. ZIKAR:

Indeed it is.

MARIA:

Is everything okay? Daddy! Were you trying to work? Lily's here for me! Not you!

DR. ZIKAR:

Yes, I apologize. [DR. ZIKAR stands up and sets his book on the table.] Speaking of work, it's almost time for my first appointment. Play nicely girls.

MARIA:

Alright! I'll bring you some tea later.

[DR. ZIKAR exits through the double doors on the right.]

MARIA:

Alright, no more doctor – patient stuff! You're my friend and you're here to play! So let's play!

LILY:

Anything for you Maria.

Scene 2

[LILY and DR. ZIKAR are inside of an office. Book shelves line the right side. Windows are on the back wall, with the curtains drawn. There is a desk in front of the window, with papers and books on it. There is an arm chair off to the right, with a couch next to it. The only exit is a door to the left. A grandfather clock it next to it. LILY is sitting on the couch while is walking over to the arm chair from the door.]

LILY:

I have had enough. My life is not something that you can play with like it's some kind of toy. I am done with you, and your lies, and your manipulation.

DR. ZIKAR:

Oh but dear child, you don't have a choice. After all, I hold the life of your dear precious Maria. [he sits down in the chair]

LILY:

You would kill your own daughter? Just to make a point?

DR. ZIKAR:

Of course. That's the only way to deal with a corrupt pawn; to hit them where they hurt the most.

LILY:

You will not get away with this! I swear I'll-

DR. ZIKAR:

You'll what? Call the police? Oh I'm really scared now. Who's going to believe you? An insane little girl or her prestigious therapist? Face it girl, I've held your life in my hands the moment I declared you insane. Hell, I'd go so far as to say you were mine the moment your parents shoved you into my office. You're nothing but a broken doll.

LILY:

[Stands up] No I'm not! I am not some broken doll! I am a person! I'm alive and I can make my own choices!

DR. ZIKAR

No you can't. Face it, your life is mine, and there is nothing you can do about it. You are a doll that I have carefully broken. I just have to create the final crack and you'll be perfect.

LILY:

We'll see about that. [LILY walks towards the door angrily]

DR. ZIKAR:

And where do you think you're going? Our session isn't finished yet. And you know very well that you can't leave. What would your parents think?

[LILY stops. She turned around slowly and walked back towards the couch, sitting down and crossing her arms.]

DR. ZIKAR:

That's a good little doll. Now, is the medicine I've given you working?

LILY:

How should I know? You never even told me what it was supposed to do.

DR. ZIKAR:

So you're taking it?

LILY:

I have no choice. My parents watch me until I do. If it were up to me I would pour it down the drain.

DR. ZIKAR:

Be careful child, if people heard you say that, who knows what they would think?

LILY:

I don't care what they think! I don't care what anybody thinks!

DR. ZIKAR:

Maybe you should. I mean, your parents do.

LILY:

Of course they do. The noble house of Mitran only cares about their appearance.

DR. ZIKAR:

I wonder what you've done to their image? An insane fifteen year old that murdered her cousin in cold blood.

LILY:

I didn't kill him! Besides he deserved it! His poor fiancée. How could she stand to be engaged to a man that would abuse a harm women.

DR. ZIKAR:

And who believed you when you told them these things?

LILY:

No one.

DR. ZIKAR:

Exactly. You're just a deranged child, have been since you were a little girl. And who would? It's high time you realize that no one will ever listen to you. Even if you changed yourself everyone would still view you and the insane girl. They'd look down on you, and praise your parents for having the courage to put up with you.

LILY:

Stop talking! Stop it! Just stop it! [LILY bows her head and grips her hair as she screams]

DR. ZIKAR:

Enough of this foolish nonsense! [DR. ZIKAR pulled on her hair and forced her to look up.] You do not give the orders here. I do! And if you don't want to end up in the insane ward or worse, dead, you better listen to me! [DR. ZIKAR shoves her back, forcing her down on the couch. LILY is silent]

LILY:

Why?

DR. ZIKAR:

Why what?

LILY:

[shouting]Why are you doing this to me?

DR. ZIKAR:

Because I can. You'll find that in this world there are people that do things simply for the fact that they can.

[The grandfather clock chimes.]

DR. ZIKAR:

We are done here. For today.

[LILY pushes away his hand and races to the door, leaving quickly.]

Scene 3

[LILY enters the ZIKAR living room from the left archway. MARIA is sitting on the ground, holding her doll closely.]

LILY:

I'm sorry for being late.

[MARIA says nothing]

LILY:

What's wrong Maria? [LILY sits down next to MARIA]

MARIA:

[MARIA holds up her doll. The face is cracked and the right arm is gone.] She's broken. My favorite doll is broken.

LILY:

You're normally very careful with your dolls. What happened?

MARIA:

Dad accidentally knocked her off the table.

LILY:

Can't you take it to the doll shop? I mean, somebody can repair it there right?

MARIA:

But this doll is special.

LILY:

All the more reason to get it fixed! We can go out on Sunday and get it fixed.

MARIA:

We can't go out on our own. And your mom is hosting a party on Sunday

LILY:

We can skip it. It's going to be boring. A bunch of stuffy old people talking about business. Do you seriously want to go there over fixing your doll?

MARIA:

You have a point. Alright! We'll fix her on Sunday.

LILY:

Great! Now, how about we go have tea outside? [LILY stands up and pulls on MARIA'S arms. The two girls giggle and exit through the left archway]

[DR. ZIKAR enters through the doors on the right and sees the doll on the floor.]

DR. ZIKAR:

Stupid child. She should know better than to leave her things on the floor like that. [Picks up the doll] Such an ugly broken doll. Almost like the girl you resemble. Almost, but not quite [He slams the doll onto the ground, and steps on its head.] There, now you resemble her perfectly. It's only a matter of time.

Scene 4

[LILY barges into DR. ZIKAR'S office. DR. ZIKAR doesn't look up from his desk.]

LILY:

How dare you!

DR. ZIKAR:

Be a bit more specific child. What did I do?

LILY:

You know damn well what you did!

DR. ZIKAR:

[Stands up] Don't use such language you little brat. It is unbecoming.

LILY:

I'll use whatever language I damn well please! Now why! Tell me why!

DR. ZIKAR:

As I said before. You're going to have to be a bit more specific.

LILY:

You destroyed Maria's doll!

DR. ZIKAR:

Do you have proof?

LILY:

I don't need any proof! It's the kind of thing you would do! You only bought that damn doll because it looked like me! And that's why you broke, because that's what you plan to do to me!

DR. ZIKAR:

[Stands in front of LILY and looks down at her, sneering] Don't flatter yourself. You're nothing like a doll. Perhaps 'bitch' would be a better description. [LILY screams and prepares to slap him but DR. ZIKAR catches her hand.]

LILY:

Let me go!

DR. ZIKAR:

Why would I do that? It's my job to break you and then train you like the rabid bitch you are.

LILY:

Get your filthy hands off of me!

DR. ZIKAR:

Now that's rich. I'm filthy? You should look in a mirror sometime.

[LILY screams and wretches her hand free. She pushes him back. DR. ZIKAR fell against the desk. LILY lets out a shout and punches him. DR. ZIKAR holds his face.]

DR. ZIKAR:

Why you little bitch.

[LILY kicks him in the face. While DR. ZIKAR is in pain she grabs the letter opener.]

LILY:

LISTEN TO ME! I am not some doll! I'm a human and I'm free to make my own decisions! You do not control me! [LILY raises the letter opener]

DR. ZIKAR:

What are you going to do? Kill me? [DR. ZIKAR laughs] You don't have the guts.

LILY:

Try me!

DR. ZIKAR:

Face it girl, everything you do, everything that happens to you is thanks to my hand. No matter what you do, I will always control you!

LILY:

Not anymore!

[LILY slams the letter opener into DR. ZIKAR's eye. DR. ZIKAR screams in pain as she removes the letter opener. LILY holds it up and slams it into his head, killing him.]

LILY:

I am nobody's doll.

Scene 5

[LILY, covered in blood and still holding the letter opener, enters the sitting room. MARIA sees her and screams.]

MARIA:

Lily! What happened to you?

LILY:

I'm free. I'm finally free.

MARIA:

[in terror] What are you talking about? What did you do?

LILY:

He's gone! He'll no longer control me.

MARIA:

Lily, please tell me what's happening! I'm scared! [sobbing]

LILY:

Don't be scared Maria. [LILY walks towards MARIA]

MARIA:

Stay back!

LILY:

But, Maria, I've freed us! He can't control us any longer!

MARIA:

What are you talking about?

LILY:

Your father! That sick twisted bastard! He's dead! He'll never harm us again!

MARIA:

Daddy? You killed my dad? Why?

LILY:

Because he deserved it! He tried controlling me. He tried to break me. He even threatened to kill you just to try and break me!

MARIA:

No you're wrong! Daddy would never!

LILY:

Of course. Of course he would treat you with kindness. He only ever showed his true self to me. That manipulative bastard!

MARIA:

Lily! What have you done?

LILY:

I've freed us! Don't you get that? I've freed us from his control.

MARIA:

Oh god you are insane. Daddy was right.

LILY:

No he wasn't! [LILY runs forward and grabs MARIA'S arm.] I'm not insane! Do you hear me? I'm not!

MARIA:

Let me go!

[LILY wraps her arms around MARIA, hugging her. The two fall to the ground.]

MARIA:

Please, let me go [crying].

LILY:

Never. I'll never let you go. I'll protect you forever.

[MARIA reaches onto the coffee table and grabs a knife. She stabs LILY in the back.]

LILY:

Why?

MARIA:

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. [crying]

[LILY's grip on MARIA loosens.]

LILY:

But I did this to protect us.

MARIA:

How could killing my dad protect us?

LILY:

I'm sorry. I was just doing what was best. Please forgive me.

MARIA:

A-Alright.

LILY:

Thank you.

[LILY goes limp as she dies, leaning against MARIA.]

MARIA:

[Wraps her arms around LILY's dead body] Why? Why did this have to happen?
