"YES!" Randy's shout made Aileen's head snap up from her mending as her husband laid down the newspaper.
"What is it?" She asked, noting three-year-old James watching his father with wide eyes.
"Lincoln won the election!"
"Wonderful!" Then Aileen's brow knit together and she said, "What happens now?"
"What do you mean? Lincoln will be sworn in in March, and then he'll become the president."
"I know that, but what do you think the South will do? They won't like Lincoln being president, for sure."
Randy sighed, and rubbed the back of his neck. "I fear, my dear, that this nation is on the brink of war."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
