A Line in the Sand

What does it mean

To have a line in the sand?

To say you can't cross it

When it's just a line in the sand.

To say you need to be on one side

Of that stupid line in the sand.

To say, that's where I want to be

Just over the line in the sand.

To say there are bad people

Just over the line in the sand.

But what makes us different?

What really makes us

Look down upon the rest?

Because we cannot say

That we surely are the best.

Because we don't care about

All the people there

We just draw

A line in the sand.

But what makes us people

When we change where we belong?

We are all one human,

One world.

So what do we say

When we want them away?

Do not cross the line in the sand!

Is that what we are about?

Is that what we are made of?

When there are so many other lines to be crossed,

Why do we care about this one?

Where I live

Cannot make me, me,

But where I come from can.

When I cross the line in the sand,

Why should it change who I am?

When we live on one Earth

And we are one people.

Why can't I just cross

The line in the sand.
