The children filed into their room, visibly tired but still giggling together. Terrance and Claudia climbed into their beds with no issue, but Eleanor stopped short. Another child, one she had never seen, was sitting in the bed across from hers.
Terrance, noticing Eleanor's confusion, spoke up. "That's Caroline, she lives here too."
Caroline, who had been absentmindedly brushing through her golden hair looked up at Eleanor. "A pleasure," she said, though it didn't seem all that pleasurable to her.
Eleanor nodded, hardly able to rip her eyes from the girl. She was absolutely stunning, with her tresses falling neatly down her back, and a face like a porcelain doll. Eleanor climbed into bed, still staring.
It took a moment for Caroline to notice. "Can I help you?" she asked, setting down her brush.
Eleanor blushed slightly and shook her head. She climbed under the blanked on her bed and turned to face Terrance, whose bed was next to hers. He had a smug look on his face.
Josephine poked her head into the room. "Lights out, children," she said, letting the room go dark.
There were brief sounds of the four children settling in, and then silence as each one drifted off to sleep.
Eleanor dreamed of her mother, her brothers, and Caroline.
