The Night Is Young

By Joseph Logsdon

How long could he keep it up? He had been driving for hours, completely exhausted. Loneliness can do strange things to a man, especially when he doesn't have a home. He had no wife, no children, no family of any kind. He traveled the country, determined to make an honest living. Come to think of it, David had never made an honest living. He was a gambler, a thief, someone you wouldn't want to meet. The road was hard, but his heart remained harder. It was a tough life, full of pain and failure.

How long would it be, until David ended his life? The gun was in his pocket, he only had to pull the trigger. Just when things started to look bad, David spotted two women on the side of the road. From the looks of things, they needed a lift. One was blonde, the other was brunette. Eager to help them, David stopped the car. He rolled down the window, all too willing to oblige them.

"Do you need a lift?"

"That depends, how far are you going?"

"I don't know, we'll just have to see, won't we?"

"What are you, some kind of huckster?"

"I'm not selling anything, if that's what you mean?"

"Well, I guess we don't have anything to lose," the brunette stated, getting into the backseat of the car.

"Betty, I don't trust him," the blonde exclaimed.

"Big surprise, you don't trust anybody," she laughed, buckling her seatbelt.

"Fine thing for you to say, considering what you did a few miles back," the blonde replied, getting into the car.

"One more word out of you, I'll give it to you good," she threatened.

"Girls, is there any reason to fight?"

"Please excuse Sarah, she can be very temperamental," Betty laughed.

"Will you shut up? If I have to spend one more day with you, I just might die," Sarah screamed.

"By the way, where are you two headed?"

"Kentucky," Betty answered.

"What a coincidence, I'm going there myself," David stated, driving away in the car.

"Why's that?"

"Betting on a horse," David answered.

"Truth be told, we're not exactly hitchhiking," Sarah stated.

"Say another word, I'll kill you," Betty threatened, grabbing Sarah by the arm.

Something didn't seem right with the way they were behaving. Betty glared at Sarah, desperation in her eyes. Though he couldn't be sure, David suspected something was wrong. He kept his eyes on the road, fearful of what would happen next.

"Say, uh, you girls like the radio?"

"Whatever you do, don't turn it on," Betty exclaimed, fear in her voice.

"Why not?"

"With the radio playing, we couldn't talk," she answered.

"Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't talking the problem? Ever since you two arrived, you've been arguing, you even threatened to kill each other. Why you're traveling together, I'll never know," David stated.

"We're complicated, Sarah and I. While we do argue quite often, we always manage to make things right. As long as we have each other, we'll never be lonely. Isn't that right, Sarah?"

"You said it, we'll never be lonely," Sarah replied, kissing Betty on the lips.

"Oh, we almost forgot, what's your name?"

"David," he answered.

"Tell us, David, do you want to have some fun?"

"In what way, may I ask?"

"Stop the car, and you'll find out," Sarah laughed.

"I have a schedule to keep, I can't just abandon everything," David stated.

"According to who, your mommy?"

"My mother's dead, just so you know," David stated.

"What a shame, you need some strong women in your life," Betty stated, grabbing his shoulder.

"What are you doing?"

"You've been suffering a long time, haven't you? Don't bother denying, I can see it in your eyes. You've been drifting from place to place, never satisfied with what you've achieved. Contrary to everything you've done, you still want that feeling that everyone else has, but something inside you won't let you have it. You scream, violently begging for someone to love you. Won't you let us love you?"

Betty placed her hands down his pants, eagerly awaiting his response. Sarah unbuckled her seatbelt, quickly following Betty. The two women kissed him, both trying to win his affection.

"Now, to make things as pleasant as possible, won't you stop the car?"

David did as requested, satisfied with what they had done. The car stopped, allowing them the opportunity they needed. Sarah kissed his neck, giving Betty the chance to go through his things. She gently removed the gun from his pocket, certain that he wouldn't notice.

"To deny yourself pleasure, is to deny yourself the world," Betty stated, swiftly going through his wallet.

"How true, how true," Sarah stated, licking his neck.

David trembled, excited by what was happening to him. The sad thing was, his good luck couldn't last forever. Betty put the knife around his throat, desperate and out of options.

"Now that I have your attention, you're going to do exactly as we say," Betty demanded.

"Is this some kind of kinky sex?"

"Listen, you motherfucker, I'm not playing games. You can either do what we say, or you can talk to the knife. Between you and me, the knife isn't nearly as charming," she laughed.

"We won't hurt you, as long as you play along," Sarah added, obviously intimidated by Betty.

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"Maybe if you didn't travel so much, you'd know what we want. Don't you ever listen to the news? We're convicts, the dangerous kind. We don't take shit from anyone, let alone people like you. We picked your car because we liked you, and that's the truth. Only one question remains; are we going to take you as a hostage, or are we going to leave you here? I got an idea, why don't you choose? Just to remind you, we're in the middle of nowhere. You have no food, no way of supporting yourself. Chances are, you'll die out here. Anyone who tells you different, doesn't know what they're talking about. So, what's it going to be?"

"I'll go with you, on one condition," he stated.

"And what's that?"

"Will you give me that special hostage treatment?"

"We'll see, the night is young," Betty laughed.
