POV Jessie
A geek. One way to describe me. I'm not a stereotypical nerd with tight pigtails and metal rimmed glasses. I'm different. I have long auburn hair, deep green eyes, and a tall, curvy body. But I'm safe from being bullied at school, because I'm homeschooled. I'm not a super smart mathematician like Cady Heron, in Mean Girls. But that doesn't matter. Everything changed one day.
"Jessica! You'll be late for the first day of school!" My mom shouts.
No I won't, Mom. Our clock is 10 minutes early! I slip into a pretty blue shirt and pull a bulky sweater over it. I put on my skinny jeans and lace my combat boots. Today is going to be exciting! I put my contacts on, grab my Coach bag, and sling it over my shoulder, grabbing a pink beanie on my way out.
"Jessica! How many times have I told you to come down! The school bus is here!" My mom shouts over the country music. She knows I hate country. I shrug, then grab some blueberry yogurt and a plastic spoon, and head out the door.
As I approach a bench to wait for the bus, I see a few people already there. Great. I sit down on one end, as far away from the others as possible, and plug my earbuds on.
"Hi." I look up and turn off my music. "Are you new?" A boy steps in front of me. He has light brown hair and hazel blue eyes. He's actually really cute and my heart does that weird thing where it stops working for a few seconds.
"Yeah. I'm Jessie."
"I'm Carson." He sits next to me. "So, what grade are you gonna be in?"
"Eighth," I answer.
"Cool! Me too!"
A girl, about my age walks to us. "Hey Carson!" She waves casually.
"Hey babe!" Babe? My heart sinks a little.
"This is Jessie." Carson gestures to me.
"Hi Jessie! I see you've met Carson! My name is Grace, but everyone calls me Gracie!" She flips her bobbed hair.
"So, are you in eighth grade?" I ask her.
"Nah. I'm a Freshie, but Carson and I still work it out!"
Carson nods.
"We have lunch together with some other friends. Why don't you join us?" Grace offers.
"Okay, I'll come."
Grace links her arm in Carson's and hops onto the bus.
The lunch bell rings, finally! I race to the cafeteria and get in line for the food. Okay, not really food. More like tasteless slop, hardly worth the money I have to pay. I see Carson and he waves me over to his table.
"Hey Jessie!"
"Hi Carson!"
"Have you seen Grace?" He asks. I think I detect a trace of nervousness in his voice, but I'm not sure.
"No," I answer. "Why don't you check the English room? I think she said something about talking to Mr. Russo for extra credit."
"Good idea!"
When I begin eating, I heard harsh whispers.
"Why were you making out with him!" Carson seethes, his voice carrying clearly from Mr. Russo's classroom.
"I don't know, he just pulled me in! Just forget about it and move on! Please!"
"No! You cheated on me, and that's that! You can forget about our date! Not worth waiting for you!" Carson stomps off.
I feel sorry for both of the people. I'm suddenly uneasy about my would-be friends. Would I be forced to choose between them?
