One time, when I was in third grade, Johnny and I had a friend named Chris.

"Watch out!" Chris yelled as he ran toward us from behind. He jumped on my back and we kept running as we laughed. The day was ending and you could smell July in the air.

"Why do I always have to carry you guys?" I asked as I huffed on the way to the park a few blocks away from our neighborhood.

"That's because you're the biggest." Johnny pointed out.

"Well, I'm tired." I said as I shook Chris off of me. It was true, I was the biggest, and the fattest.

"You're no fun!" Chris adjusted his red hoodie and walked right next to us. His curly brown hair stuck out from the spaces around his face.

"You guys know I have back problems, and you're not a feather you know." I complained as I rubbed my back.

I stared straight ahead at nothing while the professor gave his lecture. Everything in front of me blurred into nothing. I thought of everything and nothing all at once. Everyone started to leave and I got up into the hoard of exiting students. It was Friday. I walked down the hall and outside to the square. Ever since I met Faith, all I did was look for her, hoping to catch a glimpse in the crowd of students. It had been a month and I had seen her. Until then.

I walked down the square and I saw her sitting on a bench, her lips where moving and she looked incredibly sad. Once the crowd cleared I noticed she was talking to someone sitting next to her. Her long black hair was up in a messy knot. Lose strands framed her face beautifully. I wished so many things at that moment.

I quickly dodged behind a few trees and watched.

"You're just over exaggerating." The guy shook his head. He was tall and tan. He had light brown hair and a square jaw. He wasn't exactly unattractive.

Faith shook her head. "No, Dalton, you don't pay attention to me anymore." She looked up at him with pleading eyes. She crossed her arms and tucked her hands into her black sweater.

He sighed and looked at his phone. "Look Fay, we'll talk later, I have to go."

"Dalton…" Her voice squeaked. She threw her hands down at her sides as she got up and took a step forward. But the guy was gone. She stood there staring at him walk away. Her stare fell empty to the floor and she sat slowly back on the bench and placed her hands on her lap. She stared straight ahead and I noticed her empty stare begin to water. I gathered up the courage and walked up to her.

"Hey…"

Her head snapped in my direction. "Oh, Edward." She forced a smile and quickly wiped at her eyes.

"May I?" I motioned towards the empty space on the bench.

She nodded.

They day was cloudy and it was starting to get dark. It was the kind of weather that made you want to go inside and take a nap by the heater.

"How have you been?" I asked as I stared ahead at the unknowing people passing by.

She chuckled softly as she wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "I'm okay thank you, what about you?" She looked up at me with a genuine smile.

I sighed. "Well…" I looked ahead. "I'm alive, so I'd say, pretty good." I turned to look at her.

She giggled. "That's good."

She stared at me for a few seconds in silence, then she sighed.

"What's on your mind?" I asked.

She looked up at me. "Did you see what happened?" She asked softly, her face showed a bit of embarrassment. Her eyes looked worried.

I looked ahead. "Not much, but what I did see, was that you and that guy have some problems."

She turned her body in and angle to face me. "Have you ever just felt ignored? Like when you need someone the most, nobody seems to be around?"

I shoved my hands into my pockets. "Yes." Of course I did.

Faith's expression softened. She looked at me with sad eyes. I began to feel water splash on my face. "Crap."

Faith giggled and looked up at the sky while she squinted. "We should get out of the rain."

I nodded. "There's a convenience store over there." I pointed in the direction of the store.

"Let's go!" Faith ran off giggling and I followed her.

By the time we got there, the rain fell harder and the sky was darker. We were both soaking wet. Faith shivered under the awning, her hair was flat and stuck to her face. I looked at my reflection in the glass and I looked the same. "What do we do now?" Faith looked up at me. I felt my teeth chattering.

"How far is your dorm?"

She frowned. "It's Hillary Hall."

"That's on the edge of campus…" I frowned, too.

She hugged herself. "I know. What about yours?"

"M-mine?" I looked up ahead. "Harris, it's not too far."

"Let's go there then!" She smiled.

"Uh…" I pictured the mess we had in our room, but Faith was already running in that direction.

I could never forget the way she looked as she ran in the rain. She turned to look back over her shoulder at me. Her pretty white smile, her loose hair strands sticking to her cheeks, and her striking eyes… It hurt to look at her. To witness such beauty…

When we got to the front doors I shuffled through my soaked book bag to find my ID. Faith laughed and I found it.

I swiped it and the door clicked open. "I hate the security."

She mouthed as she smiled. Me too.

I opened the door to my dorm and realized Johnny wasn't inside.

"Uh, you can sit somewhere…" I said quickly picking up the clothes strewn around the room. "I apologize for the mess…" I turned and saw that Faith was already sitting in my unmade bed. She reached for a picture I had on my beside table.

I coughed and continued to pick up misplaced things.

Faith stared at the picture. "Who are they?"

I threw a pile of dirty clothes in the closet and cleared my throat. "Um…" I walked over to the bed and sat awkwardly next to her. She was holding a picture of an ample girl in jeans and a t-shirt next to a bigger guy with his arms around her shoulders. "That's my sister and I."

"This is you?!" her eyes opened wide and she looked at me. Those green eyes of hers surrounded by a dark edge had an amazing gleam that made me not want to look away.

"Yeah." I looked down and messed with my hands.

"Wow, you look so different now." She smiled at me in what I perceived as amazement.

I looked down at her again. "Yeah, I lost the weight after my mom took me to a nutritionist."

"Well, I think it awesome that you did that. You look great." She put the picture back and looked back at me.

My mind dwelled on those words. I wondered if she really thought I looked great. I wondered if she thought I was attractive and if she thought about me at all. "Thank you." I ran my hands through my hair and I realized we were both still wet.

I got up and walked to the closet.

Faith let her hair loose and started running her fingers through it. "So, where's your roommate?"

"Jonny? He's probably stuck somewhere because of the rain." I answered as I came back with one of my t-shirts and handed it to Faith. "Here, so you can change into something dry." I looked at her then spoke. "I can give you a ride home in a while."

"Thank you so much that would be great, Ed." She hugged the t-shirt and walked towards the bathroom.

The thought of her changing made me nervous.

I quickly shook the thoughts out of my head and changed into dry clothes.

Faith came out in the oversized long-sleeve and her long hair loose around her. She placed her things next to where she had placed her backpack.

"Do you want to watch TV or something while we wait for the rain to go down?" I asked as I reached for the remote.

Faith looked a bit spaced out before she looked at me and smiled. "Sure."

She walked over to the bed and sat herself down. I sat next to her and started to flip through channels.

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Faith seemed to be looking at my direction, but I wasn't sure, and for some reason I felt too embarrassed to look. I felt my face start to burn up.

I swallowed and turned to look at her.

She was leaning towards me on her side, her face looking right up at me.

I couldn't break the stare. "Um, what is it?" I asked quietly.

Faith smiled and looked into my eyes. "They're so blue."

"Huh…?" I said softly. I was extremely confused. Faith's face closed some of the space between us.

She giggled softly. I looked at her ample lips as they parted to speak. I had never noticed what a unique shape they had. "I have never seen eyes like yours." She placed her hand on my face and traced her thumb on my eyebrow.

"Uh, do you still want that ride home?" I said as I panicked slightly at her touch.

Faith noticed this but she simply sat back and smiled. "Of course."

I jogged through the rain as I headed to my old, grey, beaten down Chevy in the dorm parking lot. Faith was waiting by the entrance.

When I pulled up to where Faith was waiting I stopped at stared as she stood there through the drizzled window of my car until she got closer and stepped in.

I was quiet and so was she as I drove to the other side of campus. It was dark now, and the rain had stopped.

Occasionally, I would glance at her to see she was looking out the window and up to the now starlit sky.

Her voice suddenly bounced from the window. "You know…" She began. I heard her sigh as I started to see Hillary Hall come up into view. The building's lights twinkled weirdly that night. The light reminded me that other people existed.

"I don't really feel like going home." She finished in a somewhat giddy way, but I could tell she was trying to hide some other feeling.

"I know this really cool place I could take you to, if you want."

Faith turned from looking out the window and smiled at me. "Really? Where is it?"

I felt warm at the sound of excitement in her voice.

"You'll see."

She giggled as I passed her dorm hall and stepped on the gas pedal.

"It's so pretty."

I saw her eyes twinkle as I pulled up to the spot I told her about.

I shrugged. "It's close to this make out spot, but this particular spot is secret."

Faith laughed as she hugged herself in the giant shirt. "You take all your girls here?" She smirked.

I scoffed. "Nah, I come here to be alone." I stared ahead at the many lights down below. We were on the edge of a cliff that looked down on the whole city.

"You know the lights make me wonder of all the life that is out there." Faith was staring intently ahead. Her eyes reflecting the tiny dots of light.

"What do you mean?" I asked curiously. Looking away from her and to the lights.

"There are an infinity of lives, stories, truths… that we will never hear…" She almost whispered.

I looked at her. I was in awe of this girl. Who was she?

"What's yours?" I asked quietly.

Her head turned slowly to me. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. "I.." She turned back to the lights. "It's not that interesting." She smiled halfheartedly.

"Yours?"

"Mine isn't either."

We sat there for what seemed like hours just staring off into the lights. Even so, in complete silence, I felt like we told each other so much.
