I woke up. It was the first day of the summer holidays. I checked my watch; 6:30 am. I lay back in bed and thought about all the things I was going to do these holidays. I closed my eyes and drifted back to sleep. When I opened them again, sunlight was streaming through the open window. 10:00 am. I got out of bed and pulled on shorts and a T-shirt and tied my black hair in a ponytail. Hopping downstairs, I grabbed some breakfast and went down to the train station to meet my friends
When I got there, Sky and Lily were already there. Samantha hadn't come yet, so we waited. Sky, Lily and Samantha were my new friends. I'd only just moved here, to New York, last month, and they became my instant friends at school. As soon as Sam arrived, we boarded a train and sped off towards the city's new park.
The park's enormous gates opened up onto a wide footpath. People walked up and down it, chatting and laughing. The huge bronze gates gleamed in the sunlight.
'We should have bought our bikes' sighed Sky. 'There's a cycling path.'
'Oh well.' I said, opening a brochure of the park. 'We can always hire one.'
We walked up to the bike centre. 'Come on. Let's hire some.'
We cycled around the park for a while, stopping at various attractions. After a few hours, we decided to head back home. It was getting dark. We dropped the bikes back, and then headed back towards the exit. Lily led the way. Suddenly, she stopped. '
What's wrong, Lily?' asked Sam, worried 'Is everything all right?'
We all stood shocked as Lily raised her hand and pointed in front of her.
'The gate,' she stuttered, 'It's closed.'
