Chapter 6

There was a room available. Small but quaint, with a side view of the lake but it was quiet and romantic and neither guest was complaining. They weren't prepared, of course, no luggage or toiletries, but sometimes romance was spontaneous and they both knew it was time to bury their spouses (at least for one night) and feel again.

The bathroom was down the hall. Nikki checked the makeup on her face in the mirror and brushed her teeth with her finger and a crushed breath mint from the dining room. Todd took his turn in the bathroom while back in the room Nikki carefully removed her dress as well as her undergarments and she slipped under the covers in the nude knowing it was what she wanted to do.

Todd returned and saw that Nikki was already under the covers, her head resting on a pillow propped up against the headboard.

"Oh," he said, taken aback. "Time for bed already?"

"Do you think this is what Doris and Jim did on prom night?" She grinned.

"I'm pretty sure Jim Stanson got bombed and passed out before Doris ever got out of her dress," Todd laughed. "What did you and what's-his-face do on prom night?" He asked, standing at the foot of the bed in his jeans and a tee shirt as he had taken off his dress shirt and tie.

"Went to the all night Denny's in Greenville with Kathy-Anne Desmond and Stu Lyons," she answered. "I had a one-thirty curfew."

"Stu was okay," Todd said. "We played football together."

"I saw you play all your games," Nikki smiled.

"You had no choice," Todd said with a smirk as he took a seat at the edge of the bed and kicked off his shoes. "You were in the band."

"You were a very good player."

"You were too," Todd warmly, reaching his hand out and letting his fingers skim across the top of her hands where she had them folded across her stomach on top of the covers. "I liked listening to you play."

"Thanks," Nikki said shyly. "But that was a long time ago."

"Yeah, it was," Todd sighed nostalgically as he gave her a long contented look.

Nikki felt her body buzz with unexpected emotion and tantalized eagerness, her skin warming as an unfamiliar sensation bubbled within her. They stared at each other for a long moment, each desperate for the other to make a move after years of heartache and aloneness. Linda's meds killed her sex drive years earlier and Scott was too unfocused, distracted and disconnected to remember what sex was all about.

Finally, Todd and Nikki both leaned forward and met each other with wanting opened mouths and Nikki ran her hands through Todd's hair while exploring the cavern of his mouth with her tongue. She pulled Todd's tee-shirt off over his head and in her haste the covers fell down to reveal her naked breasts but she didn't care, pressing them against his bare breastbone as they continued to smooch.

Neither doubted their need or want. There was no hesitation, no second guesses,no thoughts of dead spouses as Todd's hands softly moved across the softness of Nikki's breasts, stroking her nipples with tender care. Their kisses were tender but forceful and Nikki rubbed her hand along the front of his chest and down to the middle aged flab of his stomach.

Much later, after the lovemaking was over and they lay in the bed holding on to each other, Nikki let out a breath of contentment.

"Wow," she blushed. "This is some Prom Night!"

Todd kissed her to let her know he agreed. "I think we waited long enough for our special prom," he said.

She grinned. "Thirty-one years, but who's counting?"

"Not me anymore," Todd said happily, giving her a hug. "It's been awhile since I've done...this."

"Me too," Nikki told him.

They drifted off into blissful sleep but later Todd awoke to find the bed empty next to him. He sat up and focused his eyes to see the naked Nikki standing at the window peeking out the curtains at the night lake.

"I always knew it would be romantic here," she said when she heard him stir and saw him sitting up on the bed peering at her. "I remember thinking that on Prom Night wishing I was with you."

Todd left the bed and joined her at the window, standing behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder while she continued to peek out at the sleeping lake.

"I love you," he whispered.

Nikki rested her head against his chest while the gentle slaps of the lake waves echoed through the partially opened window.

"Maybe you shouldn't live at the shrine for a while," Nikki suggested quietly. 'Take a break from all that."

"Where would I live?" He asked, tasting her hair.

"With me," she smiled. "And my Mom. Sort of a reboot of our lives."

"Oh, I bet your mom would love that!" Todd laughed.

"Actually, she would," Nikki revealed, turning to face him in the night shadows. "She says we're too lost souls who were destined to find each other."

He stared long into her eyes. "I think she's right," he finally said, giving her a kiss before he swooped her up in his arms and carried her naked to the bed.
