Rain tumbles down from over brimming cloud
Aimless beads of glassy damp descending
All around, A steady stream, unending
Surge of dreary life from celestial shroud
Umber earth grows dark once more and verdant
Growth erupts anew from dank and fertile
Soil, while people hide themselves from hostile
Penetrating dew, or running fervent
To evade the soaking dart's advance
Yet I inside my arid square safely
See them pass, protected by the chance
That lay the raindrops drumming down gently
Upon the roof instead of on my crown.
Beyond our rule, without it we would drown
