Scene 3

(AGATHA and ABEL run into a dimly lit cart. The cart appears empty and they duck behind one of the seats.)

ABEL

(Shaking from the experience.)

Geez, what did we do? Sneak on a train or commit a murder? That was nuts!

AGATHA

I told you that guy is creepy! Never doubt the vibes!

ABEL

How long do you think we have to wait here until the coast is clear?

(AGATHA shrugs the lights come up. A bunch of children run on stage. One of the kids is DINAH)

Dinah! Hey it's me!

DINAH

(approaches slowly)

Abel? You, you really shouldn't be here…

ABEL

Dinah we really need to speak to Teresa.

(TERESA approaches from behind)

TERESA

Why Dinah, what have you found here?

(Noticing ABEL)

You…you don't belong here

ABEL

Yeah, we know we just need to…

TERESA

You do not belong here! You do not belong here! Only the pure of heart are welcome!

AGATHA

Look, we're lost okay, we just want to go home!

TERESA

(Hissing)

Sinners corrupt the children!

AGATHA

(Panicked)

O-okay, we get the message, come on Abe.

(They try to leave but TERESA snatches ABEL's arm)

TERESA

(menacing voice)

No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house! No one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes!

(ABEL screams and tries to break free)

ABEL

Let go of me!

TERESA

For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light!

ABEL

Agatha!

TERESA

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish!

(AGATHA comes and hits TERESA as hard as she can)

AGATHA

Let go of my brother!

(Teresa claws AGATHA's face and AGATHA screams in pain)

ABEL

Agatha!

TERESA

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish! PERISH!

(AGATHA takes ABEL's arm and yanks him out of TERESA's grip. They then run off stage with TERESA chasing them screaming wildly.)

YOU MUST CONFESS ELSE YOU WILL PERISH! PERISH! PERISH!

BLACKOUT

Lights up, ABEL and AGATHA are back in a passenger car, sitting together in a seat and panting.

AGATHA

What is wrong with this crazy train?

ABEL

Are you okay?

AGATHA

(Rubbing her face)

I'm fine, that wasn't the worst experience I've had with a nun.

(A quiet pause as ABEL turns away guiltily rubbing his arm.)

Hey what about you, are you okay?

ABEL

(Deep breath)

Aggie, I-I have something to tell you.

AGATHA

Umm, okay.

ABEL

(Shamefully)

I did the second interviewers with the Salvages, and they said they wanted to adopt me and… I-I said yes.

AGATHA

(Shocked and hurt)

W-what?

ABEL

Agatha, I'm sorry but I knew you weren't going to take it well and…

AGATHA

You lied to me?

ABEL

I'm sorry!

AGATHA

So what you're just gonna leave? Just like that?

ABEL

What do you expect me to do? Say no? These are the first people in eight years who want me…I-I just want to get out of the foster home.

AGATHA

Great, well, I'm very happy for you

(AGATHA gets up quickly and exits)

ABEL

(Calling after her)

Wait, we should talk this out! Agatha!

(ABEL starts after her when BEATRICE calls from offstage)

BEATRICE

Abel!

(panicked, running towards him)

Where's your sister? Is she okay?

ABEL

Depends on what you mean by okay. We got away from the conductor alright fine, but then I told her…

BEATRICE

Oh thank god you guys got away from him! I'm so sorry! I didn't know he'd go all psycho on you! If I did I never would have…

ABEL

Hey its fine, we're both okay…well so long as he doesn't find us I guess.

BEATRICE

Oh, okay that's…that's good. Again I'm really sorry, but where did Agatha go?

ABEL

Well I told her that I lied to her about the Salvages and she…she didn't take too well.

BEATRICE

Wait wh…?

ABEL

But honestly, what does she want from me? Just to go up and tell them, "hey I know you want to raise me and pay for college and everything but I can't go anywhere without my sister so, no thanks!"

BEATRICE

Well…

ABEL

I mean if our situations were reversed and someone wanted to adopt Agatha I'd say, "Yeah Aggie go for it! Be happy! Don't let me hold you back"

BEATRICE

I guess you have a…

ABEL

If anything I should be mad at her! If she really cared about me she'd say "Go for it, Abe! Follow your dreams! I'm your number one supporter!"

BEATRICE

I suppose…

ABEL

I know she'd never say that but still…

(Looks to BEATRICE)

I'm a terrible person aren't I?

BEATRICE

I-I don't know! I don't do comfort well! Heck I don't even do people well!

ABEL

(Sitting down, sighing)

I know I shouldn't have lied to her but I just didn't know how to tell her… I mean I've never pictured a future without Agatha.

BEATRICE

(Panicked)

Oh I-I-I'm supposed to say something helpful now huh?

ABEL

If you can.

BEATRICE

Sorry, I'm actually really bad with this kind of stuff, and well, people in general. I-I wasn't really well liked back home.

ABEL

Maybe, I should just talk to her? I know she's mad right now, but we can sit down, tell each other how we feel. Sap like that, right?

BEATRICE

That sounds like the wise thing to advise…I think. Okay go do that!

ABEL

Sorry for going off on you like that, I just needed to vent. And you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I mean you're really not that bad.

BEATRICE

Thank you, you're not that bad either. Yeah, I guess it's just been awhile since I had any friends. Ever since I got leukemia, people just avoided me…

ABEL

Wait, what…y-you have leukemia?

BEATRICE

I did, it was a pretty aggressive case. Doctors said there wasn't much they could do.

ABEL

B-but you got better right? Since you're here and all

BEATRICE

(Surprised)

Abel…I'm here because I never got better

ABEL

(Shocked)

Wh-wh…

BEATRICE

(looking at ABEL)

Abel…you do know where we are. Right?

(ABEL starts breathing fast and panicking. He looks towards front stage left)

BLACKOUT

LIGHTS ON

(AGATHA and ABEL run into a semi-crowded subway station. One of the children is DINAH)

ABEL

Oh, we are so late!

AGATHA

Relax, that's why we're taking the subway.

ABEL

Remind me why we had to sneak across town again.

AGATHA

I told you, this guy was selling some real valuable junk for real cheap and was gonna cut me in on it

ABEL

And then he never showed up?

AGATHA

Well…

ABEL

Great, these get rich quick scams never work!

AGATHA

They're at least worth a try.

ABEL

Yeah, but are they worth the punishment from Mrs. Trash?

AGATHA

Relax, she probably hasn't even noticed we're gone yet.

ABEL

We've been gone for three hours! Of course she's noticed!

AGATHA

Hey, she might have…

(AGATHA is interrupted by a loud rumbling sound)

ABEL

I-is that the train?

AGATHA

Abe I think there's something wrong with this place

(The rumbling sound gets louder and AGATHA and ABEL both scream)

BLACKOUT

ABEL

I-I-I-I need to find Agatha!

BEATRICE

What?

ABEL

I need to get Agatha! We do not belong on this train!

BEATRICE

Abel, we all belong on this train. Once the conductor punches your tickets, you can't get off.

ABEL

But the conductor never punched our tickets! Remember? They were fakes! I have to find Agatha!

(ABEL runs off stage. BEATRICE hops up.)

BEATRICE

Oh I can help you! And I can do it right this time!

(With that she runs off the stage after ABEL)

BLACKOUT

LIGHTS UP. AGATHA sits alone on an otherwise empty cart. The CONDUCTOR approaches her from behind.

CONDUCTOR

Eh' hmm.

(AGATHA gasps and whirls around to face him)

We do not take kindly to stowaways, Miss, now if you would kindly hand me your ticket.

AGATHA

Look I don't have any tickets alright. My brother and I snuck on, so if you want to kick us off the train, just go ahead and do it already.

CONDUCTOR

Did you check your pocket?

AGATHA

(Fiddling through her pocket)

Why would I do that? I already know that I don't have a…

(She pauses as she pulls a slip of paper from her pocket)

H-how did that get in there?

CONDUCTOR

(loudly)

Tickets please!

AGATHA

Dude, has anyone ever told you that you take your job way too seriously?

ABEL

(Running in)

Agatha, stop!

AGATHA

Abe?

CONDUCTOR

Stop running in my train!

ABEL

Agatha come on! We have to get out of here!

CONDUCTOR

No one leaves this train! Not even you two!

(The CONDUCTOR snatches AGATHA's ticket from her hand.)

ABEL

No!

(BEATRICE tackles the CONDUCTOR, making him drop the rest of the tickets from his belt.)

CONDUCTOR

AHH! Get off me! This is not proper locomotive behavior!

BEATRICE

There is no way I'm letting you hurt them!

(Turning to ABEL)

Get out of here! Hurry!

ABEL

What about you?

BEATRICE

(Still struggling with the CONDUCTOR)

I'll be fine! I'm actually helping this time!

ABEL

But!

AGATHA

Don't worry, if there's anyone who can handle him its her! Let's move!

(AGATHA and ABEL run off stage while the CONDUCTOR struggles underneath BEATRICE)

BLACKOUT

(AGATHA and ABEL enter stage left. They both look around frantically until ABEL sees a door off to the side. ABEL runs over.)

ABEL

Over here! Hurry

(ABEL struggles to open the door as AGATHA rushes over)

AGATHA

So what's exactly the plan?

ABEL

We have to jump off this train!

AGATHA

What?

ABEL

Look this isn't any ordinary train! And trust me we do not want to be here when it reaches the final destination!

AGATHA

So we're just gonna jump off? Is that even safe?!

ABEL

Probably not, but we don't have a choice!

(With a final yank ABEL pulls open the door. ABEL looks to AGATHA and puts out his hand)

Ready?

AGATHA

(She looks at his hand and stammers)

I-I don't know about this Abe. Do you really think everything will be okay?

ABEL

Agatha we have got to get off this train! Anywhere is better than here!

AGATHA

But how do you know? How do you know we won't end up somewhere worse?

ABEL

Agatha we don't time! We have to jump now!

AGATHA

I can't do it Abe! Just go without me! You'll be better off!

ABEL

Agatha, please, I'm sorry I lied to you! I never should have seen the Salvages behind your back!

(AGATHA backs away uneasy)

AGATHA

Don't be! Everyone always liked you better anyway, all I ever did was hold you back…I-I'm sorry

ABEL

Agatha you're the only reason I've lasted this long! You really think I can go back without you…I… I'm gonna tell the Salvages no.

AGATHA

Really?

CONDUCTOR

(from offstage)

You kids better not be doing anything reckless!

ABEL

Yes, now come on, let's get out of here.

(ABEL goes to AGATHA and is about to take her hand when the CONDUCTOR snatches him first)

CONDUCTOR

So sorry, but we haven't reached your stop yet!

ABEL

Hey!

AGATHA

Please sir, we were never meant to be here! This has all just been a huge mistake!

CONDUCTOR

Young lady, there are no mistakes!

ABEL

Agatha jump! Just forget about me!

CONDUCTOR

Are you insane! Only the good lord knows what will happen to you if you jump!

ABEL

Don't listen to him! You'll be fine, trust me!

AGATHA

I do trust you

(AGATHA steps forward and hugs ABEL. The CONDUCTOR grabs her, but in the moment AGATHA pulls ABEL out of his grip and shoves him out the door.)

ABEL

Agatha!

BLACKOUT

NEWS CASTER

(V.O)

In our top story, police have still not released a final statement as to how of the city's subway stations collapsed. City officials and maintenance workers are both being investigated as to whether they followed proper protocol in inspecting the foundations of the station. In related news only two of the people at the station survived the collapse. One of them, a foster child by a nearby home, has just woken up from a three day coma. Doctors have yet to release a full diagnosis, but he is likely to survive.

LIGHTS UP

ABEL enters with flowers and a novel and walks over to a grave stone.

ABEL

Hey Aggie, I'm back from the university. I would have been here sooner, but you know how the Salvages drive. I guess I could have taken the train if it wasn't for my irrational fear of conductors. Well that's what the therapist calls it.

(ABEL pauses to wipe his eyes, and sits down next to the tomb stone.)

So, The Secret Adversary. Want to continue where we left off?

(ABEL opens his novel and begins reading)
