Jack Matthews ran through thick liars of smoke. Two hijacked planes just crashed into the twin towers. He embers from the fire fell on his helmet but He didn't notice them. He and his team were trying to contain the fire but so far to no avail. Matthews tripped and fell many times but just got back up and continued fighting. A large beam suddenly fell from the ceiling and separated Mathews from his team. The beam kinked the house so Mathews was completely and totally alone. There was a small hole in the newly made barrier but it was by far to small for him. He had to wait for his team to get a hatchet. While he waited he heard a small sound. He went down the hallway towards it and found a small girl under some rubble. The kid was coughing and without even giving it a thought Mathews took off his mask and put it on the kid. He started to remove the rubble but the heavy smoke and lack of air caused him to move slower. Eventually Mathews got the debris cleared off the girl and picked her up and made for the opening. He couldn't fit through the hole but he was certain that she could. He got to the beam and yelled for his team. A yell from the other side signified that some were there. He told them briefly about the kid and started to push her through the opening. A strong pull told him that they had her. The beam started to crack again and almost fell on the girl but Mathews held it up with all the strength that was left in him. The girl got through and Mathews let it drop. Mathews was now completely blocked off. A man with hatchet got there and started to hack at the beam. They got through but Mathews was dead. When he dropped the beam it caused more rubble to fall on him. He died protecting the girl who was now safely out of the building and getting rushed to the hospital. Mathews body was carried out of the building where a paramedic took him. He would not be forgotten.

fallen but not forgotten. These brave firefighters gave their lives willingly that day. I ask you that today and every other 9/11 that you remember these men and honor them even if it's just a small prayer or a small moment of silence.
