I wrote this for my Creative writing class. The writing is mine, but the lyrics are not. The lyrics belong to Simon and Garfunkel.

The Sound of the Blitz 1941

The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel

I turned my collar to the cold and damp
Down the streets, hurrying.
Something bad is happening.
And the sign flashed out its warning
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

Hello darkness my old friend,
Bombs dropping,
People screaming,
Buildings crumbling.
Because a vision softly creeping,
Air raid sirens shrieking
With the sound of silence.

People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People seeing without looking
Death and dying
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw,
Overhead planes are flying,
Nazi chaos reigning
Ten thousand people, maybe more,
Bombs releasing fire after exploding.
Bomb shelters are where people are fleeing
Disturb the sound of silence.

Phrases that are encouraging
Are written on the subway walls
Finally, explosions stopping
Ears are ringing
People looking
Damage is all they're seeing
And echoes in the wells of silence
