Faulted Stars

Avery James

You left me.

I suppose you left us all,

but I was the one left

thinking you would return,

muttering dated assurances to myself.

The stars are blurred,

streaking together to form patches of light.

Memories build up inside me,

until they leak from my eyes.

So I wish upon the star,

(star light, star bright).

Come home to me.

Sit beside me.

Take my hand.

The stars come back out

-the constant stars-

And I scream

Because they can't bring you back,

but those tiny pricks of light

appear above me

and I can't breathe.

You swore by them once

The constant stars…

So I fault them.
