Lou drove them back to the lake house.
"Hello!" Lou called out when they went inside but Alley didn't answer.
"I don't think she's around," Karen observed, raising an eyebrow. "Was that part of your plan too?"
"No," he said, sounding slightly embarrassed.
They found a note on the kitchen table left behind by Alley
Went to movies and clubbing with Kath and Karyl. Be back late.
"Is everybody in on this conspiracy?" Karen asked with a frown.
"There was no conspiracy, Karen," Lou replied. "I didn't know Alley was going to take off."
"So, what are we going to do now?"
"Are you hungry?" He wondered.
"No," she answered. "The pancakes were filling."
Lou looked around, trying to come up with something to do. Karen rolled her eyes and headed for the stairs. Lou followed her to the room they shared the night before and he placed the teddy bear on the bed.
"Let's take a nap," Karen suggested.
Lou pushed the bear to the other side of the bed to clear the space and he pulled back the top cover and sat on the bed, patting the space beside him while looking at her. Karen sat next to him and he pulled her closer and she leaned on his chest, listening to his heart beating, his breathing coming out evenly and then he yawned and he closed his eyes, extending his right arm for her to rest on.
"Sleep," She whispered gently.
He yawned one last time before finally dozing off and Karen watched him sleep from where she lay on the bed. When Lou awoke from his doze later, he saw that Karen was sitting crossed legged next to him staring at him.
"What?" He wondered.
"I'm trying to figure you out," Karen answered as truthfully as she could. "But it's not easy, you know."
He rubbed his hand over his face and sighed. "This is the real me," he assured her.
Karen peered at him for a long minute. "Why couldn't you have been like this all along?" She asked with annoyance. "Why did you have to be the cocky overconfident king jerk of the school?
Lou sat up on the bed. "I don't know," he confessed.
"Along the way to becoming a jerk you stopped being a friend," Karen sighed. "That really hurt, you know."
"I missed you."
"When did you realize that?" She wanted to know.
"When Alex started liking you and I saw that you were starting to like him back," Lou revealed.
"Yeah, well." She shrugged, falling back to the bed easily. "That was my plan."
He looked at her with disbelief. "So," he realized after thinking about it for a few minutes. "You really did like me!"
"Of course I liked you, you dolt," she sighed as she lay against the mattress.
She felt his body come closer and his arms closed around her waist. He buried his head in the space between her head and shoulders, breathing in deeply.
"I really did miss you," He breathed, sending shivers down her spine.
"As much as I don't want to admit it, I missed you too." She rolled over so her back was to him.
He edged closer and she could feel his chest against her back. "Are you still mad at me?"
She nodded affirmatively. "But I love you anyway."
He rolled her over so she was facing him. "What did you say?"
"I'm only saying it once," she smiled.
Lou hugged her as hard as he could. Karen almost couldn't breathe but she didn't want him to let her go. They cuddled like that for a while but then Karen slipped off the bed and went to the window.
"What are you doing?" Lou asked.
"Looking for butterflies," she answered dreamily.
Keeping her back to him, Karen stared out the window wondering if this was as it was meant to be. Her and Lou together after all this time. She slowly unbuttoned her blouse and let it fall to the floor. Then she unsnapped her bra and let that fall to the floor too.
"What are you doing?" Lou asked again, this time his voice rising a few octaves.
Karen didn't answer, unbuttoning her slacks instead and shimming them down her thighs and legs until they were on the floor too. She was just in her panties now. She covered her naked breasts with her arms and then turned to face him.
"I'm becoming a butterfly," she said, stepping back to the bed with her arms still across her breasts.
Karen knelt on the bed and they kissed. Lou fell back on the bed and she went with him, moving her arms away and pressing her bare breasts against his chest while they made out. After a while, Lou rolled her over so he was on top of her, kissing her gently.
"I am so in love with you," he whispered.
"I want to surrender to the moment," Karen told him.
They kept kissing until Lou stopped and looked into her eyes. "I want you," he said.
She nodded nervously.
"Are you sure?" he asked gently.
Karen didn't say anything as she pushed Lou off of her and she peeled off her panties before he could stop her. She sat on the bed looking at him.
"For the first time, I'm completely naked in front of a guy," she said, noticing that he was looking at her with amazed joy.
"I'm glad I'm that guy," Lou said softly. "You don't have to be shy with me, Karen."
He sat up and peeled his shirt off and she lay back and watched as he peeled off his pants and underwear from a sitting position with his back to her. She could see the crack of his ass as he looked over his shoulder at her. And then he lay down beside her and she saw him in all his naked manhood and she couldn't help but swallow hard.
"I waited for you," he whispered.
Tears came to her eyes and she nodded with understanding approval. "Thank you."
It was only when they finished that Karen noticed the spots of blood on the sheets. It had been clumsy and awkward for both of them.
"It will be better the next time" Lou pledged as they lay naked side by side on top of the bed.
"It's okay," she whispered quietly.
"Do you regret it?" Lou asked, lifting his head with worry and concern.
"No," Karen assured him. "I want to make you happy."
"You made me happy a long time ago."
"I'm glad," she smiled, sitting up on the bed. "I'm going to go clean up now."
Lou watched as she slipped out of bed naked and headed for the bathroom. Once she was gone he lay his arm across his eyes and groaned knowing he had disappointed her. Karen cried in the shower, second guessing herself for giving up her virginity so quickly. Maybe they should have waited to make sure they were both ready.
Karen dried her hair and wrapped a towel around her and when she returned to the bedroom Lou was under the covers, hiding his nakedness.
"I can't stop thinking about you, Karen," Lou told her. "I'm sorry I wasn't very good."
"Shh," she said.
"I wanted it to be better," he sighed. "I've wrecked everything."
"It takes two to tango,Lou," Karen told him. "We were both way to nervous and emotional."
She purposely let the towel slip off her body and she stood naked before him, hoping to make him feel better.
"This really wasn't part of the plan, Karen," Lou told her honestly. "I didn't bring you here to have sex."
She slipped into the bed and cuddled close to him. "I seduced you," she reminded him.
"I fantasized about this forever but I wasn't sure if you'd ever be interested in me," he said.
"You're the only one I ever thought of in this way," she assured him.
"What are we going to do now?" Lou asked.
"We'll figure it out," Karen replied. "We'll get better."
Why were they both so sad? Making love was supposed to be a memorable, joyful experience but they both seemed drained and unsure.
"How long have you wanted to see me naked?" Karen asked, thinking about how he looked at her when she took her clothes off.
"Mindy Stewart's pool party, eighth grade," Lou answered right away. "You were wearing that yellow bikini and I had to wrap a towel around myself because I was afraid people would notice I had a boner."
She laughed. "Even then?" She asked, impressed.
"Always," Lou said.
There was a long pause.
"So, are we spending the night here together again?" She asked.
"Sure, why not?" He said hopefully.
"So we're sleeping together?" Karen wanted to know. "Literally?"
"You're so beautiful, Karen," he sighed. "I always wanted to tell you how I really felt about you but I never could."
"Well, the waiting is over," Karen assured him, cuddling closer. "I felt the same way about you as you did about me."
"We shouldn't have made us wait so long," Lou realized.
"Kiss me," Karen requested.
He did as she asked, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tight for what seemed like forever.
"Just tell me you love me," Karen said.
"You know I do, my butterfly."
