CATHERINE and CASSANDRA are sitting in front of their parents who are standing behind them. The family is in fifty era clothing and they have very pale skin and pink cheeks. They have doll like expressions and stiff movements. They are 'perfect'.

SMITHS: We are the Smiths. Welcome to our perfect home.

(The light go up revealing a simple home set, CENTER stage is a kitchen table, which should be easily moved. On STAGE LEFT Is a bedroom and on STAGE RIGHT is a bedroom. The SMITHS are in the kitchen.)

MOTHER: Here are your lunches.

CATHERINE: (Grabbing her lunch from MOTHER) Thank you Mother.

MOTHER: You are welcome Catherine, Have a splendid day at school!

(CATHERINE and MOTHER hug)

CASSANDRA: (Grabbing her lunch) What's for lunch today, Mother?

MOTHER: Why, peanut butter and jelly, dear.

CASSANDRA: Oh boy! I just love your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches mother!

FATHER: (Taking his lunch) Don't we all! (He pecks his wife's cheek before turning to his daughters opening his arms) Goodbye Cupcake, (he hugs CASSANDRA) Goodbye Angel (he hugs CATHERINE), have a splendid day at school.

CASSANDRA AND CATHERINE: And you at work Father! (They exit STAGE RIGHT)

MOTHER: (hugging FATHER) Have a wonderful day at work dear!

FATHER: Thank you, dear! Have a nice day at home, (He turns to exit before turning back) Don't work too hard!

MOTHER: (giggles) Oh, you!

(FATHER grabs his suitcase and exits STAGE RIGHT. The lights fade on MOTHER. During this time remove the table and roll in the curtains so only center stage is showing, bring down a background that resembles a school. The lights rise on CASSANDRA and MOXIE DOWN CENTER STAGE, MOXIE is wearing a hoodie and baggy jeans, she gives off a chill disposition.)

MOXIE: Hey, Cassie!

CASSANDRA: (giggling) I told you I prefer Cassandra!

MOXIE: Right, sorry, (in a mock british tone) Good morrow, lady Cassandra!

(CASSANDRA Laughs)

MOXIE: How you doing on the english paper?

CASSANDRA: Quite well I think! And you?

MOXIE: Honest? (She leans in and stage whispers) I'd be happy if I just got a D!

CASSANDRA: (gasps)

MOXIE:(rolling her eyes bemused, then noticing CASSANDRA's lunch) Brought your lunch again?

CASSANDRA: Of course! Mother makes the most splendid meals!

MOXIE: I guess…

CASSANDRA: What is the matter, Moxie?

MOXIE: Nothing…. (CASSANDRA looks worriedly at her friend) It's just… We hardly have anytime to hang out at lunch!

CASSANDRA: What ever do you mean?

MOXIE: It's just, It would be nice if you bought lunch to, so we could talk in line instead of having only, like, five minutes to talk.

CASSANDRA: I suppose that makes sense…. I'll tell you what, I'll discuss the topic with mother! I'm sure she'll be ok with it!

The lights fade again, this time set up the house again. Morning sounds should be playing in the next scene to signal to the audience that it's the next day. The light rise and the SMITHS are doing their regular morning routine, but CASSANDRA seems a little nervous

MOTHER: Here are your lunches.

CATHERINE: (Grabbing her lunch from MOTHER) Thank you Mother.

MOTHER: You are welcome Catherine, Have a splendid day at school!

(CATHERINE and MOTHER hug)

CASSANDRA: Mother?

MOTHER: (Pauses, seems slightly confused as if this isn't how it goes) Umm… Yes dear?

CASSANDRA: Mother, I was wondering if it would be quite alright if I bought lunch today?

MOTHER FATHER and CATHERINE looked shocked.

FATHER: Now, Cupcake, why would you ask such an upsetting question?

CASSANDRA: (Looking at her feet) I simply thought that-

FATHER: Do you not like your Mother's cooking?

CASSANDRA: (Shocked) Oh, no, it isn't that!

FATHER: So you just wanted to upset your mother then?

CASSANDRA: NO! Of course not!

FATHER: Then you should apologize to your Mother for being rude.

CASSANDRA: But father-

FATHER: Then you should apologize to your Mother for being rude.

CASSANDRA:: Father, please at least listen-

FATHER and MOTHER: Then you should apologize to your Mother for being rude.

CASSANDRA: But-

FATHER, MOTHER, and CATHERINE: Then you should apologize to your Mother for being rude.

CASSANDRA: (Defeated) I'm very sorry Mother. I didn't mean anything by it…

MOTHER: (Handing CASSANDRA her lunch) That's quite alright, dear! We all make… (this is very difficult for her to say) Mistakes.

FATHER: Of course we do, just don't make a habit of it.(acting like nothing happened he takes his lunch, pecks his wife's cheek before turning to his daughters opening his arms) Goodbye Cupcake, (he hugs CASSANDRA who seems slightly reluctant) Goodbye Angel (he hugs CATHERINE), have a splendid day at school.

CASSANDRA AND CATHERINE: (CASSANDRA not as cheery as the day before) And you at work Father!

(The light once again fade and the transition between home and school happens once more. The lights rise on CASSANDRA(who has a crack on her face, that is pretty faint. You'd have to be looking for it to notice.) and MOXIE CENTER STAGE, but today CATHERINE can be seen UP CENTER, in the far corner, listening in on their conversation. CASSANDRA seems a little sad.)

MOXIE: Yo! Cassie!... I mean, Cassandra! What's up! (Hold her hand up for a high five)

(CASSANDRA instead shows MOXIE her lunch bag)

MOXIE: (Disappointed)Oh…. That's fine, I can try to just make my own lunch!

CASSANDRA: Really?

MOXIE: Yeah! I was being selfish before, making you change for me I mean. I just need to wake up a few minutes early, it's really not that big of a deal!

CASSANDRA: Are you sure?

MOXIE: Of course! Would I ever lie to you?

CASSANDRA: (Smiling) I suppose not.

MOXIE: That's right! In the meantime, we could go to the movies!

CATHERINE: (Looks over to them with interest)

CASSANDRA: (Shocked) Now?

MOXIE: No, silly! After school! Since we won't be able to spend a bunch of time together at lunch, I thought it would be a good idea!

CASSANDRA: I don't know… Mother and Father don't approve of film watching…

MOXIE: What? No way! You've never seen a movie?

CASSANDRA: No…

MOXIE: Well now we HAVE to go watch a movie!

CASSANDRA: I have already told you, it isn't permitted!

MOXIE: You could always sneak out..

CATHERINE: (Clasps her hand over her mouth in shock)

CASSANDRA: MOXIE! I'm surprised at you!

MOXIE: (Hands up in defense) Hey calm down! It was only a suggestion… Why don't you just ask? Maybe they'll be okay with it!

CASSANDRA: I don't know….

MOXIE: Well, when you do, call me, ok?

CASSANDRA: Alright….

Lights Fade and rise on the kitchen with MOTHER and CATHERINE setting the table.

CATHERINE: (Whispering to MOTHER) Mother dear, I have some worrying news about Cassandra.

MOTHER: What do you mean, dear?

CATHERINE: I saw her talking with this girl, whom was dressed quite inappropriately if you ask me, and she was trying to convince Cassandra to, (she pauses and checks the area) see a movie…

MOTHER: That's not so bad, as long as your sister said no.

CATHERINE: But mother! That isn't all! She also suggested to Cassandra that she should sneak out !

MOTHER: (Gasps) Well, that certainly is an issue! I'll tell your Father!

FATHER: (Enters STAGE RIGHT) Hello Dear, I'm home!

(MOTHER goes over and hugs FATHER, and pecks him on the cheek. CASSANDRA ENTERS STAGE LEFT and sits at her spot at the table, next to MOTHER's spot. MOTHER whispers something in FATHER's ear and then they all join CASSANDRA at the table. They eat a bit. When they eat they move the fork/spoon in a mechanical motion, up to their mouth but they never actually eat anything. Everyone only smiles through this scene, only CASSANDRA shows other emotion through her eyes.)

FATHER: Cupcake! (CASSANDRA looks up) How was school?

CASSANDRA: Quite well Father, how was -

FATHER: Because I've been informed it went unexpectedly.

CASSANDRA: Then you must have been misinformed, Fath-

FATHER: Are you calling me a liar, Cassandra?

CASSANDRA: (Shocked)

FATHER: I'm going to ask you again, how was school?

CASSANDRA: Fine.

FATHER: "Fine" what?

CASSANDRA: Fine, father.

FATHER: Nothing happened?

CASSANDRA: No, father.

FATHER: Nothing troubling was said to you?

CASSANDRA says nothing.

FATHER: Cassandra?

CASSANDRA says nothing.

FATHER and MOTHER: Cassandra?

CASSANDRA says nothing.

FATHER, MOTHER and CATHERINE: Cassandra?

CASSANDRA: (Defeated) My friend, Moxie, she wanted to attend a film and was hoping I would join her. Not to worry though, I told her you and mother would not approve.

FATHER: That's my girl.

MOTHER: How is your schoolwork going, girls?

CATHERINE: I have just gotten my science report back!

FATHER and MOTHER: And?

CATHERINE: And I received an A!

FATHER: Of course, Angel, I wouldn't expect anything less of you!

MOTHER: What about you, Cassandra, dear?

CASSANDRA: Oh, well I'm still waiting to get my english paper back! But I'm sure it is an A!

FATHER: Of course, Cupcake, I wouldn't expect anything less of you!

MOTHER: It is time for bed.

(They all rise, grabbing their plates and turning to the 'sink', the lights fade on this. The lights rise on the SMITH morning routine. CATHERINE has more cracks on her face with scotch tape over a few of the larger ones.)

MOTHER: Here are your lunches.

CATHERINE: (Grabbing her lunch from MOTHER) Thank you Mother.

MOTHER: You are welcome Catherine, Have a splendid day at school!

(CATHERINE and MOTHER hug)

CASSANDRA: (Grabbing her lunch, she sounds sadder than she did the past few days) What's for lunch today, Mother?

MOTHER:(Doesn't notice) Why, peanut butter and jelly, dear.

CASSANDRA: (just going through the motions) Oh boy.

CASSANDRA AND CATHERINE: (CASSANDRA is still not as enthusiastic) And you at work Father! (The exit STAGE RIGHT)

The lights rise on MOXIE and CASSANDRA, they are holding papers and have been talking prior.)

MOXIE: I'm sorry I got you in trouble

CASSANDRA: Do not fret over it, friend! Mother and Father seem to have gotten over it, besides after I show them my grade, I'm sure they won't even remember being upset!

MOXIE: So you got an A?

CASSANDRA: I'm certain I did (getting out her paper) I worked very hard on it! I proof read 15 times, and cited all my sources and- (she looks at the paper and stops)

MOXIE: What? What did you get? (CASSANDRA is silent) Come on it can't be that bad!

CASSANDRA: (Faintly, under her breath) a B.

MOXIE: What-

CASSANDRA: (Franticly) a B! How could I of gotten a B?! I worked ever so hard! Father is going to be so disappointed in me when he finds out! What am I going to do!

MOXIE: Whoa, whoa, Cassie, calm down, ok? Everything will be fine, alr-

CASSANDRA: Fine? FINE? Everything will not be fine! I got a B!

MOXIE: So? A B is good, It's better than what I got!

CASSANDRA: (angry now) OF COURSE IT IS! THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING! A C WOULD BE 'BETTER THAN YOU GOT'! I GET A's, I DO WELL IN SCHOOL WHILE YOU STRUGGLE, BECAUSE I AM PERFECT AND YOU ARE NOT!

MOXIE: (Speechless)

CASSANDRA: (Realizing what she said) Oh, no, Moxie…. I didn't mean to go off on you like that, I mean… (Searching for words) I was only frustrated I didn't mean-

MOXIE: You know what, It's fine. You're stressed I get it.

CASSANDRA: (Confused) Are you certain?

MOXIE: (Trying to lighten the mood) Yes, Lady Cassandra, I am certain.

CASSANDRA: But, I was so-

MOXIE: Mean? Cold? Cruel? Don't worry about it, we all get that way from time to time.

CASSANDRA: But I'm not supposed to be like everyone, I'm supposed to be perfect.

MOXIE: Cassie, you are perfect, in your own way. What's hurting you is trying to be perfect in your family's way, you can't do that. No one can do that and be happy. Just be you. Quirky, smart nervous Cassie. That's perfect.

CASSANDRA: (Under her breath) That's…. Perfect?

(CASSANDRA drops and as she does the lights go black and a breaking noise is heard and MOXIE cries "Cassie!". When the lights go up CASSANDRA is on the floor surrounded by broken porcelain, CASSANDRA is no longer pale with rosy cheeks but now has a normal complexion. She is CASSIE.)

MOXIE: Cassie! (Drops down next to her) Cassie, are you ok?!

CASSIE: (Looking around,) Yes… I'm fine… (She looks at MOXIE, then hugs her) I'm much better now, thank you Moxie..

MOXIE: It's what friends are for…

(CASSIE and MOXIE EXIT. CATHERINE ENTERS STAGE UP Center(Where she was the day before), she covers her mouth. The lights fade. The lights rise on THE SMITH family dinner. Only CASSIE Is eating, everyone else is watching her, uncomfortable with her fluid movements and slight slouch. They maintain their smiles but their eyes show clear distress)

MOTHER: Cassandra, dear, could you please sit up straight?

CASSIE: (Adjusts herself) Sorry, Mother.

FATHER: Cupcake, Elbows off the table please.

CASSIE: (Adjusts herself) Sorry, Father. (She then eats like this for a moment, actually consuming her food)

FATHER: What are you doing, Cupcake?

CASSIE: What do you mean?

FATHER: You are eating out of sync with the family, and in such a barbaric way.

CASSIE: I'm just eating?

FATHER: "Just eating" what?

CASSIE: ….. Dinner?

FATHER: (Staring at CASSIE)

CASSIE: …...I'm just eating dinner… Father….

FATHER: Cupcake, is everything alright? You're acting wrong.

MOTHER: (To Father) Yes, I thought that as well, dear. (To CASSIE) What is the matter, Cassandra?

CASSIE: Nothing!

FATHER: Don't Lie, Cassandra. I don't condone Lying.

CASSIE: I'm Not!

FATHER and MOTHER: Don't Lie, Cassandra. I don't condone Lying.

CASSIE: (getting Frustrated) I told you, I'm No-

FATHER, MOTHER, and CATHERINE: Don't Lie, Cassandra. I don'-

CASSIE: (At her wits end) I'M NOT! I am FINE, okay? I feel great! I'm -

FATHER: Don't interrupt, (With a bite to it) Cupcake.

CASSIE: You interrupted me, (Mocking him) Father.

FATHER: (Shocked, along with the rest of the table.) Did you just Back talk, young lady?

CASSIE: (Silent)

FATHER: Cassandra? Answer me this instant?

CASSIE: (Silent)

CATHERINE: I bet this is about what happened at school today….

Everyone turns to CATHERINE

MOTHER: (To CASSIE) What happened at school?

CASSIE: (Silent)

FATHER: Answer your Mother.

CATHERINE: She was talking to that girl again.

FATHER and MOTHER: And?

CATHERINE: And she told Cassandra that it was ok to receive a B!

MOTHER: Why would she ever say something like that?

CATHERINE: To make her feel better about her english paper!

FATHER: (To CASSIE) What about your english paper.

CASSIE: It's nothing to worry about Fat-

CATHERINE: Cassandra received a B!

FATHER: You received a what?

CASSIE: You're just going to let her interrupt me? I thought you didn't condone that!

FATHER: Don't change the subject! How did you, receive a B?

CASSIE: Well-

FATHER: Did you not try?

CASSIE: (Offended) Of course I did! I did the best I could!

FATHER: Obviously not.

CASSIE: Father, That isn't fair! I did the best in my class!

FATHER: I don't see how that stops you from getting an A.

CASSIE: It doesn't, I'm just sayin-

FATHER: You're just saying that you're sorry and you will do better next time.

CASSIE: (Stares)

FATHER: Go on.

CASSIE: (takes in the circumstances) I did my best. I'm NOT apologizing for that.

FATHER: Excuse me?

CASSIE: I'm. Not. Sorry.

FATHER: Do not back talk me Cassandra.

CASSIE: Don't make me feel bad for not doing anything wrong Father!

FATHER: What did I say?

CASSIE: What did I say?

FATHER: (Stands) Go to your room! Without dinner!

MOTHER: Now dear, isn't that a little-

FATHER:(yelling now) I have spoken! (a crack noise is heard and FATHER turns his head away from the audience in pain, when he returns his focus on to his family once again he hold his hand to his cheek, his porcelain is cracking.) Go to your room, now.

(CASSIE gets is frustrated and runs to her room.)

MOTHER: Maybe you should talk to her, dear?

FATHER: Yes, I agree. Enjoy the rest of your dinner.

CATHERINE: Good luck, Father.

(The lights go off in the dining area but stay lit where the bedroom is. FATHER walks to CASSIE's door.)

FATHER: (Opens door) Cassandra we need to talk about your wrong behaviour.

CASSIE: Alright… I'm sorry if I upset and disappointed you, but I worked really hard on that grade, and that's not something I'll appologize for.

FATHER: I'm tired of all this backtalk from you, Cassandra.

CASSIE: I'm not back talking. Why can't you just be proud of me?

FATHER: I was proud of you, until you received a B.

CASSIE: (Frustrated) That doesn't mean I'm wrong, Father!

FATHER: (Getting upset) Don't raise your voice at me, Cassandra.

CASSIE: (Very upset) You don't even try to understand!

FATHER: I don't need too, I think I would know my own Daughter.

CASSIE: Well, you don't! You never did! All you've ever known is this.. This… Idea and you just assume that everything should and can fit into it! Well it can't! I can't! And it's ridiculous to think I should!

FATHER: I said (Slaps CASSIE) Don't raise your Voice at me! (Slaps her again, and repeats as if MOTHER joined in) Don't raise your voice at me! (Slaps her one last time, and repeats as if both MOTHER and CATHERINE have joined in) Don't Raise your voice at me!

CASSIE: (Trying not to cry, scarred)

FATHER: Time for bed Cassandra. (Picks her up and places her in bed, as if she's a doll) Think about what you have done and said, and in the morning, if you realize your error, You may be permitted to have breakfast with the rest of the family. (Turns to the door) Good night, Cassandra. (Exits the room)

CASSIE: (As he closes the door) It's Cassie.

(FATHER collapses and the lights fade as a breaking sound is heard, when the lights go off FATHER is surrounded by broken porcelain, he now has a normal complexion and an angry and aged face. He rises and continues, his movements are fluid and angry. He is CORNELIUS).

(The lights fade again and when they rise the whole house is lit, it is morning and MOTHER is setting the table for breakfast, She has some cracks on her face. She goes to get CASSIE)

MOTHER: (Knocks on CASSIE's door) Cassandra, dear, Why don't you help make your Father's lunch? You seemed to really upset him last night, and I think it may put the two of you back on good terms. (She knocks again) Cassandra? Cassandra, dear wake up. (She opens the door to find that CASSIE is gone. MOTHER finds a note. MOTHER Goes to get CORNELIUS)

MOTHER Wakes CORNELIUS and explains what happened, their voices are hushed so they don't wake is growing more and more angry until

CORNELIUS: Well, what do you expect, from a daughter of a w****

MOTHER: (Shocked, ) How dare you call me a- Do you know how hard I work? I clean the house, I make the food, and for what? I don't need to take that, dear.

CORNELIUS: (Laughs bitterly) If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have a house to clean, nor food to make!

MOTHER: Says who, might I ask!

CORNELIUS: It's pathetic that you would think anything less!

MOTHER: (At her wits end, slaps CORNELIUS) I don-

CORNELIUS: (Hit's back, but harder. He knocks MOTHER onto the bed.) Don't you disrespect me, women! Without me you would have nothing! You would be nothing! Do you understand me?! Now get up and go fix breakfast (With bite to it) Darling. (He turns from her and get ready for work.)

(Mother goes limp in the bed as Lights go down a shatter is heard. The lights rise and MOTHER has a normal complexion and a tired face, she is surrounded by broken porcelain. She is CARRIE.)

CARRIE: (Rises. She watches CORNELIUS for a moment before grabbing a bunch of her clothes)

CORNELIUS: What do you think you're doing?

CARRIE: (She heads for the door,) I'm going to stay with my Brother. I'll be gone for awhile. (She exits, STAGE RIGHT)

CORNELIUS: Fine! Who needs you!

(CATHERINE ENTERS STAGE LEFT )

CATHERINE: (Goes to her sisters room) Good morning sister! (See's CASSIE is gone, Shrugs.) (Goes to the kitchen) Good Morning Mother! (See's MOTHER is not there)

(CORNELIUS enters the kitchen)

Catherine: Oh! Good Morning Father!

CORNELIUS: Good morning, Angel.

(They cross to DOWN CENTER. They stand similar to how the play opened, san's MOTHER and CASSANDRA. CATHERINE combs her hair behind her ear, revealing terrible cracks going down the side of her face

What's left of THE SMITHS: We are the Smiths. Welcome to our perfect home.
