"I'm sorry Lady, no new jobs today."

Janna sighed. Everyone said this inn was the best place in town to find work. West Maurice was a busy port town and people were always passing through. Those people would surely need protection on the road. Janna could do that. It's early in the season, she had told Rose, I'll find us work through fall and make enough to last the whole winter. She snorted to herself, as usual the Gods had a sense of humor. Early was the problem. As she understood from listening to people talk, it would be at least a month until the big ships came through. Not much moved until then. She glanced at the innkeeper, who had his back to her, "No work." his words echoed in her mind, no work, no work. Every day the same thing. Rose can say we're fine, Janna thought, she has money from her herbs and things, but I know better. She looked at the innkeeper again, he was speaking to a man. Turning around, she leaned against the counter and looked around the common room. Should I go back upstairs? She wondered. No, Rose has someone there. She gets annoyed if I interrupt her. She heard footsteps behind her and turned around again as the innkeeper approached her.

"Aren't you a Magician?" he asked.

"You have a companion, don't you?" He didn't wait for her reply, "Will she travel with you? Or do you need to stay in town?"

"We travel together." Janna replied, curious but not letting it show in her voice.

"Hmm..." The innkeeper looked her up and down, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Could you be ready to leave in a couple days?"

"Both of you?"

He gave her a calculating look. "I might have a job for you. There's a Lady Mage who needs an escort to Suche Island. You mind going that far?"

"Hmm..." Janna said, thinking. "How much is it?" she asked. I could probably be ready to go by tomorrow if I could arrange to board the horse, Rose might want more time.

"Take that up with her. You interested?"

"Yes." Janna nodded.

"All right, I'll tell her I've got another. She wants to talk to people and then make her decision. If she agrees to meet you I'll send one of my boys around to fetch you. So stick around. If you're chosen, my fee is three coopers."

Janna nodded and shook his hand, then walked outside. She was around the corner before she allowed herself to celebrate.
