"Déjà-Vu"

There are moments when we feel as if we are reliving a past experience. There are times when we see faces we could have sworn we have seen before. There are times when a certain surreal sensation shakes us, rattles us, thrills us beyond anything we had ever dreamed of. We have all felt it at one time or another, that strange feeling poking at us, trying to get us to remember something that we have yet to experience…

As he walked down the sidewalk, at a brisk pace, he felt compelled to take a turn down a certain road. As he walked, hand sliding across the wooden picket fence to pass the time, he looked above him at the weeping willows that enveloped him in shadow. Turning again, he found himself at a crossroads he had never seen before, and that familiar spark of realization struck him, that mysterious feeling that contradicts reality, and insists that we are wrong, and that what has not happened, has happened.

Feeling suddenly uneasy, he kept on walking, even though he wanted to turn back. When he began to cross the street, he heard an approaching vehicle. Stopping, he watched as a hearse drove by. When it passed him, something most peculiar happened – his hand simply vanished. Shocked and frightened, he turned the other way and ran, desperate to escape this strange place.

After he had been running for what felt like hours, he found himself back in the same place, standing at the same crossroads. Although he tried hopelessly to convince himself that his experience had been but a strange dream, his missing hand proved otherwise. Just then, the hearse drove by once more, and as it did, took his other hand with it. This was too much to bear, and he ran, this time twice as fast, and took many twists and turns…

He had no idea how many times he had found himself back at the crossroads, and how many times the hell-bound hearse had crossed him. By this point, he had been reduced to a mere torso, robbed of arms, legs, and a portion of his face. "If I just stay here, someone will find me. All I have to do is wait patiently and calmly."

Strangely, his disappearance had not caused even the smallest fuss. In fact, nobody remembered him…
