Star Wars: Episode 1:The Phantom Menace
TITLE CARD : A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the main title, followed by
a roll up, which crawls up into infinity.
EPISODE 1 THE PHANTOM MENACE
It is a time of peace in the galaxy. The Jedi Order, who waged war with the evil Sith forty years ago, has allied itself with the Galactic Republic, which governs over hundreds of star systems, and serve as peacekeepers.
But problems are always arising. Recently, the greedy Trade Federation has refused to recognize the newly crowned queen of the planet Naboo, and cut off all trade with the planet. Leaving the small world in economic turmoil.
While the senators debate how to handle the situation, Ambassador Palpatine has secretly sent Jedi Knight, Qui-Gone Jinn and his young padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi to settle the conflict . . .
PAN DOWN to a small cruiser traveling towards NABOO'S surface
Int. Republic Cruiser – Bridge.
Obi-Wan stares out the window at the surface of Naboo. He is twenty years old and eager for adventure. His master Qui-Gon stands nearby. He is sixty, with long graying hair and a muscular frame, despite his age. He has a stern and somewhat unwelcoming demeanor.
Qui-Gon: We'll be landing soon. [Obi-Wan doesn't respond] Negotiations shouldn't take long this time. We'll be back home at the temple within a few days.
Obi-Wan: What does that matter? We'll just be sent out again soon enough anyway. Another trading dispute or tax law outcry. More negotiations, more talking. Is this all we're to be master?
Qui-Gon: What would you prefer, my padawan?
Obi-Wan: There was once a time when the Jedi were brave and powerful warriors.
Qui-Gon: You speak of the days of the Sith. Do not be naive, young one. Those were dark times. Many good Jedi fell to the dark side, and millions of lives were lost. Jedi, Sith, civilian, it didn't matter. You'd see that chaos return for your own excitement and vanity?
Obi-Wan: Forgive me, master. I meant no disrespect.
Qui-Gon: It is alright. You should just try to enjoy the peace while it is here. As Jedi we work to maintain it, but such things can be so fleeting.
A voice crackles over the intercom
Ric Olie: [Off screen] Master Qui-Gon?
Qui-Gon: What is it Captain?
Ric Olie: [Off screen] There appear to be war ships in the atmosphere.
Obi-Wan: What? Warships?
Qui-Gon: Do not engage them. Don't head for the randevue point but land at the nearest available surface.
Ric Olie: [Off screen] Understood, sir
Intercom crackles off
Obi-Wan: What was that you said about peace being fleeting?
Ext. Naboo swamp
Qui-Gon stands outside the now landed cruiser with his arms crossed. He stares at the warships in the sky with concern. The ships are not flying at the moment but hovering in place. For the moment, it is calm.]
Obi-Wan: [coming off of the ship] No luck contacting the senate. As soon as we entered the atmosphere, our communications system was jammed.
Qui-Gon: Hmmm, that is troubling. Seems we'll be on our own for this one. First things first, let's see if we can't figure out why those ships are up there.
[As soon as he says this, the warships start speeding off towards the capital city of Thebes.]
Obi-Wan: Well what are we waiting for? Let's go. [He starts to run back up into the ship]
Qui-Gon: What do you think you're doing?
Obi-Wan: We have to follow them.
Qui-Gon: No, Obi-Wan. Have you forgotten we were sent here secretly? If we're discovered now as representatives of the republic we could cause an interplanetary incident.
Obi-Wan: [intensly] So, what then? We can't just leave.
Qui-Gon: I didn't say we would. I'm only saying we must not rush into things. Using the ship would only bring attention to ourselves. We need to learn more about the situation before we make any daring moves.
Obi;Wan: Well, what do you suggest, Master?
Qui-Gon: [He ponders a minute] How far are we from Thebes?
Obi-Wan: About 40 clicks that way.
Qui-Gon: Good. I think I know who can give us the information we need, and not tip off the Trade Federation to us being here. Follow me.
Qui-Gon runs off with impressive speed for a man his age. Obi-Wan follows not far behind.
Ext. Naboo swamp
An odd, frog-like Gungan, squats holding a clam he has retrieved from the murky swamp. The shell pops open. JAR JAR's great tongue snaps out and grabs the clam, swallowing it in one gulp.
JAR JAR: Oooooh! Yummy! Yummy!
Obi-Wan: [Off screen] Hello! Excuse us, do you have a minute?
Camera spins to show Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan coming out from behind some trees
JAR JAR: Oh nooo! They find me! [He starts to run}
Obi-Wan: [Breaking into a run] Hey wait! What are you doing? Stop!
The Gungan dives down under the water, splashing a bit of water at Obi-Wan as he goes. Obi-Wan comes to a halt, surprised and confused. Qui-Gon walks up slowly behind him.
Obi-Wan: Why'd he do that, master? I only wanted to talk to him.
Qui-Gon: Perhaps he didn't realize that. We're on a hostile planet, Obi-Wan, people are likely to be a bit on edge.
Obi-Wan: Oh. [a pause] Where do you think he went?
Qui-Gon: That was Gungan. One of this planet's aquatic people. They don't associate much with the surface dwellers. But they may be able to give us some valuable information about the situation here.
Obi-Wan: What're you talking about?
Qui-Gon: Well we can't just rush in there, lightsabers blazing. We need a strategy. We need information.
Obi-Wan: But he ran away.
Qui-Gon: Gungan's never travel too far from their underwater kingdom. If we travel there we can find someone to talk to us. I hope you remembered your breather.
He pulls out a small metal device, puts it in his mouth, and dives into the lake. Obi-Wan copies him
Int. Naboo Palace—hallway
A group of battle droids march down the hallway, firing blasters. A group of palace guards are at the other end of the hallway, also firing blasters and trying to hold formation. One guard screams as he is hit.
Droid: Forward! Hurry! We have to find the Queen before she escapes!
Int. Naboo Palace—Queen's chambers
CAPTAIN PANAKA, QUEEN AMIDALA, her Governor, SIO BIBBLE, and her four handmaidens have taken shelter in her chambers. Two handmaiden is adjusting AMIDALA'S make-up in the corner, PADME and another speak in hushed voices, comforting each other. The camera focuses on BIBBLE, who is peeking out the door at the battle as an explosion goes off
BIBBLE: Are you quite sure about this, My Lady?
AMIDALA: To stop this bloodshed, I will do whatever is necessary.
PADME: You're people will not soon forget this sacrifice. Nor will I.
AMIDALA: Thank you. [To BIBBLE] We're ready.
BIBBLE: Alright, let's move. Quickly now!
Everyone runs out of the room
EXT. NABOO LAKE - UNDERWATER
QUI-GON and OBI-WAN swim behind JAR JAR, who is very much at home in the water. Down they swim into murky depths. In the distance the glow of Otoh Gunga, an underwater city made up of large bubbles, becomes more distinct. They approach the strange, art nouveau habitat. JAR JAR swims magically through one of the bubble membranes, which seals behind him. OBI-WAN and QUI-GON follow.
INT. OTOH GUNGA - CITY SQUARE
GUNGANS in the square scatter when they see the strange JEDI. Four GUARDS armed with long electro-poles ride two-legged KAADUS into the square. The GUARDS, led by CAPTAIN TARPALS, point their lethal poles at the dripping trio. The Gungan civilians all exchange worried glances and whisper in frightened tones. Parents pull their children closer.
Obi-Wan: [Realizing they are afraid of them] Don't worry. We're here to help! We're Jedi, see?
[He holds out his lightsaber handle as proof, but the Gungans scream and flee in a panic. Soon, only CAPTAIN TARPALS and the GAURDS remain. Obi-Wan is left with his mouth hanging open]
CAPTAIN TARPALS: Yousa outlanders. Yousa dangerous. Yousa in big trouble. [He and his men encircle QUI-GON and OBI-WAN, pointing their lethal poles mencingly]
Qui-Gon: We are not dangerous.
Captian Tarpals: They no dangerous.
Qui-Gon: We are here to help.
Cpatiain Tarpals: They here to help.
Qui-Gon: You will take us to your leader.
Captain Tarpals: We will taken them to Boss.
Captain Tarpals turns his Kaadus around and marches onward, the guards follow suit. Qui-Gon gestures to Obi-Wan and the two follow behind them on foot
Obi-Wan: [Quietly, to Qui-Gon] I thought you disapproved of using our mind-trick, master?
Qui-Gon: [In an equally hushed tone] We can't afford to be wasting any time right now.
Obi-Wan: So I was right?
Qui-Gon: I didn't say that.
INT. OTOH GUNGA - HIGH TOWER BOARD ROOM
The Bosses' Board Room has bubble walls, with small lighted fish swimming around outside like moving stars. A long circular judge's bench filled with GUNGAN OFFICIALS dominates the room. OBI-WAN and QUI-GON stand facing BOSS NASS, who sits on a bench higher than the others.
Boss Nass: You cannot be here. Surface dwellers no allowed!
Qui-Gon: I assure you, your majesty, we'll be out of here as quickly as we can. We only want to know why there are warships above.
Boss Nass: Bah! Dee outlander's problems. They tryna dake over da planet. they sen mackineeks to attack us dree weeks ago. But They no good in da wata, en we fight good. Den I tells da-
Obi-Wan: Wait! You said this happened three weeks ago! The war ships have been here that long?
[Qui-Gon sends his student an angry glare for interrupting. Obi-Won looks at the floor sheepishly in return. Boss Nass, however, doesn't seem to care and continues on]
Boss Nass: Coulda be longer. I only knows when they attacks us. We don interfere with the outlander's affairs.
Qui-Gon: I see. [taking out a small bag of Republic Credits] I don't suppose you'd be willing to provide us a transport to the capital? Our mission just became very dire indeed.
Boss Nass: [Eying the credits like a child eyes candy] Hmm, you driva hard bargain. But alright. Dake dee sub out back. Justa don' scratch it.
[Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan nod and hurry out of the throne room]
A droid invasion force moves out of the swamp and onto a grassy plain OOM-9, in his tank, looks out over the vast DROID ARMY marching through the streets. RUNE and NUTE stand next to the tank.
RUNE: Our master will be pleased to hear of our progress.
NUTE: Our progress is meaningless if it does not deliver a victory. I want that queen on her knees before me by day's end!
OOM-9: We've captured most of the city already, sir. The palace has been especially well fortified and delivered a stiff resistance. But if we continue at this rate, we should—
OOM-9 is interrupted by a transmission from 3B3
OOM-9: [Con't] What? What is it?
3B3: Sir, we've captured the Queen.
OOM-9/NUTE: [At the same time] What?
3B3: She surrendered, sir. The planet is ours!
RUNE: Just as we thought. She is nothing more than a fragile little girl after all.
NUTE: Girl or no, it is critical she be kept alive. We'll need her to legitimize our occupation here. Otherwise, we'll be facing war with the Republic.
OOM-9: You heard the man. Make sure the Queen is kept alive and safe. Transport her to the dungeons.
EXT. THEED - Streets – DAY
We see some Naboo being escorted at gunpoint by droids to the city center, where the Trade Fedoration will force all the citizens of Theed to listen to a speech about their victory.
INT. Palace Dungens
Padme stares through a small window up at the feet of the citizens being forced into the town square. Her face is full of concern. Queen Amidala, still in full makeup and robes, places a hand on her shoulder and guides her to sit down against the wall
Queen Amidala: Worrying won't solve anything. The situation's out of our hands now.
Padme: But then what should I do? What can I do?
Queen Amidala: Hope. And have faith in the Republic.
Ext. Theed streets
A manhole cover in a shadowy ally within sight of the citizens being transported pops open. Obi-Wan pokes his head out and checks if anyone's around. Since there isn't, he climbs up and helps Qui-Gon up.
Obi-Wan: [While helping Qui-Gon] How'd you know about the sewer tunnels master?
Qui-Gon: Many battles between the Jedi and Sith were fought on Naboo. We used to use the sewers for sneak attacks. [As he talks, Qui-Gon surveys the area, presses his back against the side of a building and moves along stealthily. Obi-Wan follows his example, but with less caution and grace]
[As they reach the end of the alley, they see the citizens being marched towards the city square. The droids form a perimeter around the citizens. One man trips and falls as they watch.]
M47: [pointing his blaster at the man] C'mon. Get up. Move it.
[As he watches, Obi-Wan's hand wanders to his lightsaber handle. He looks to his master, who he stands opposite of, but Qui-Gin shakes his head.]
Obi-Wan: [Mouthing] What? Why not?
Qui-Gon: [mouthing] It'll give us away.
Obi-Wan's face sours. He hesitates for a moment, then ignites his lightsaber and rushes out cutting off the head of the nearest droids as he goes.
G83: Is that a Jedi?
TC12: Can't be, Jedi don't fight.
G83: Who cares, blast him!
Three droids open fire of Obi-Wan, but he deflects two of the blasts back at the droids, destroying them and cuts the third in half. He then uses the force to lift the droids across from him and smash them against the building, causing them to explode. Now all that's left are the droids bringing up the rear.
P98: Open fire!
The droids open fire. Obi-Wan cannot cover such a wide area alone. But Qui-Gon jumps in and provides support.
Qui-Gon: Well, since we're doing this the subtle way…
Obi-Wan: [to the Naboo] Hurry! Run! We'll cover you.
The Naboo flee and the droids open fire. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon deflect the blasts but one slips through and hit a woman on the shoulder, she cries out and collapses in pain. A close up of Obi-Wan as he is momentarily frozen in shock. He instinctively moves the help her, leaving Qui-Gon to take out the rest of the droids.
Obi-Wan: [Kneeling beside the woman. He feels guilty for the injury] I'm so sorry! Are you alright?
Woman: [hisses in pain as she clutches her shoulder manages to sit up. Her voice is thick with pain] I think so. [She tries to move her arm and cries out in pain again. With Obi-Wan's help, she manages to stand]
Man: She'll need a medical droid. Let me take her.
Qui-Gon: Tell me, where's the Naboo military?
Man: They were defeated. We were completely overrun in a surprise attack. The Queen's just surrendered.
Qui-Gon: I see. Thank you very much.
[They leave. Qui-Gon puts a hand to his chin thoughfully]
Obi-Wan: Master I- [Qui-Gon holds up a hand and Obi-Wan falls silent]
Qui-Gon: The Galactic Senate knew nothing about this invasion. If the Naboo have already surrendered, the only way they can re-gain their planet is to have the Queen speak with the senate directly. And convince them this was not a fair fight.
Obi-Wan: What're we going to do?
Qui-Gon: Break her out and escort her to Coriscant of course! She can't very well address the senate from a prison cell. Now come on, let's see if I remember where the Palace Dungeons are.
A long shot of the dungeon cells as a small amount of sunlight filter in from above. The Queen, her handmaidens, Silo Bibble, and Captain Packard have been separated into two cells. Silo Bible sits cradling his head, Captain Pickard stares out the small window, deep in thought, Padme and AMIDALA exchange worried glances. Suddenly there is a loud clang as the bars from the window of a cell on the opposite side of the dungeon fall of mysteriously, the edges red hot and melted. The camera pans up to a upward angle of Qui-Gon jumping into a cell on the opposite side of the dungeon from the window, Obi-Wan follows after. The others look on in surprise and confusion.
Qui-Gon: [Pleasantly] Good afternoon! I assume one of you is Queen AMIDALA, correct?
AMIDALA: [a bit hesitant] I am.
Qui-Gon: Pleasure to meet you, your highness. I am Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi knight, and this is my padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi. We're here to rescue you.
Padme: Well, what are you waiting for? Get us out of here!
Obi-Wan takes out his lightsaber and quickly cuts a door out of the cell bars and kicks it down. It makes a loud clang as it hits the floor.
Int. Entrance to Palace Dungeons
A few droids have been placed on guard duty outside the dungeons. They hear the clang of the cell door hitting the floor ring out.
FG55: Hey! Did you hear that?
Q4X7: Eh, it's probably nothing
Padme: Do you want to get us caught?
Obi-Wan: [exiting the cell behind Qui-Gone] You're right, we should just leave you here.
AMIDALA: Please, just hurry.
Qui-Gon: We'll use the force this time to lower the bars down slowly. Now, stand back, please. [They do and Qui-Gon cuts a hole in one cell, while Obi-Wan cuts a hole in the other. They use the force to lower the cell bars gently to the floor without making a sound]
Obi-Wan: Careful around the edges, they're very hot.
Padme: [walking briskly out of the cell, in an irritated tone] Yes I can see that.
Obi-Wan looks shocked and a bit offended at Padme's lack of gratitude. Qui-Gon, however, seems to either not notice or care.
AMIDALA: Thank you, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, we are in your debt.
Qui-Gon: Don't thank us yet, my lady, the battle's only half over.
Bibble: What will we do now?
Captain Panaka: Retake the palace of course.
Qui-Gon: [shaking his head] No. That won't be possible.
Obi-Wan: Why not?
Qui-Gon: Right now Theed is filled with hundreds, if not thousands of droids. If we attack the palace they'd all come rushing in and overwhelm us. There is no way we can take on that many droids with just two Jedi. Your Highness, under the circumstances, I suggest you come to Coruscant with us.
AMIDALA: Thank you, but my place is here with my people.
QUI-GON: They will kill you if you stay.
BIBBLE: They wouldn't dare.
CAPT. PANAKA: They need her to legitimize their invasion here. They can't afford to kill her.
QUI-GON: The situation here is not what it seems. There is something else behind all this, Your Highness. There is no logic in the Federation's move here. If they don't kill you.
[AMIDALA looks conflicted, unsure of what to do]
AMIDALA: Either choice presents a great risk...to all of us..
Padme: Your highness, if I may, he's right. We won't even be able to take back the palace, dare even dream of all Naboo with the forces we have now. But if we present our case to the senate, and they agree to send military aid, the Federation would be finished.
BIBBLE: Your Highness, I will stay here and do what I can...They'll have to retain the Council of Governors to maintain control. But you must leave...
QUI-GON: If you are to leave, Your Highness, it must be now.
AMIDALA: Then I will plead our case before the Senate. (to Bibble) Be careful, Governor.
Int. Entrance to Palace Dungeons
FG55: But what if the prisoners are escaping?
Q4X7: That's ridiculous! Escape is impossible!
FG55: How can you be so sure?
Q4X7: Alright, if it will keep you quiet we'll check. Okay?
[Q4X7 unlocks the door and opens it and sees Bibble hoisting one of the handmaidens up towards the window where Obi-Wan reaches down from the street to help her up. One more handmaiden waits in the corner, everyone else is already on the street.]
Q4X7: Hey! The prisoners are escaping!
[The droids open fire. A handmaiden trying to escape is hit. She cries out in pain and falls down. Obi-Wan pulls back his hand and the two parties are cut off.]
Ext—Theed street—outside palace dungeon
Padme instinctively falls on all fours and reaches for the window.
AMIDALA: [grabbing Padme's shoulder and pulling her away from the window and onto her knees] Leave them!
AMIDALA: Padme, you must!
Padme: [takes a moment to steel herself and then stands] [to Qui-Gon] Where to now?
Qui-Gon: The sewers.
Amidala: The sewers?!
Obi-Wan: You have another idea?
Padme: The sewers will work fine. Let's hurry.
They all run off down the alleyway
Int. Palace Dungeons
Close up of FG55 as he talks into a communicator
FG55: The queen has escaped! Sweep the surrounding area!
Ext. Theed alleyway
[Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Padme, Queen AMIDALA, and Captain Packard hurry along,
looking for a manhole cover. Obi-Wan spots one in the distance.]
Obi-Wan: [points] There!
They all race to the manhole cover but before they reach it, a destroyer bot appears from the end of the alley. Obi-Wan and Queen AMIDALA look behind them and see another one there too. They are trapped.
Captain Panaka: Destroyers! [He takes out his blaster and fires, but his shots are absorbed by the destroyer's shields]
[Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan ignite their lightsabers. Padme is on the ground lifting the manhole cover, a destroyer tries to shoot her, to stop her from escaping, but Padme instinctively uses the cover as a shield. The camera focuses on her face, the cover black and smoking where the blast hit]
Qui-Gon: [deflecting blasts] You'd better hurry, your highness.
[The others escape into the sewers leaving Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to deal with the destroyers. They each take one on opposite ends of the alley.]
Int. Naboo Sewers
[Padme drops into the disgusting water and gags at the smell. She pulls the front of her shirt to her nose and begins to move with the others.]
Ext. Theed alleyway
[Qui-Gon both dodges and deflects blasts as he works his way closer swiftly, with the ease and grace of someone who has done this a million times. He deactivates his lightsaber, flips over the droid and lands behind it with grace. He then calmly, slowly, reaches his lightsaber handle inside the destroyer shield and ignites it, destroying the droid. Obi-Wan, however, is clearly feeling the strain. He depends entirely on deflection to protect himself. Once close enough, he also deactivates his lightsaber but rather then flipping over the droid he just runs around it. When he initially tries to get his handle inside the shield he moves too quickly and the shield deflects it. As the destroyer starts to turn around, he dives to the side and, this time being much more careful, inserts his lightsaber handle and ignites it, killing the droid. Qui-Gon simply nods to his padawan before jumping down the manhole. Obi-Wan follows and takes to time to replace the burnt cover]
Ext. Naboo Sewers
[Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon reach the end of the sewer and emerge on a rocky beach. Their sub is parked in the water. The others are already climbing inside]
Ext. Naboo Swamp
[We see the group hurrying onto the Republic Cruiser and hear the engines fire. The ship lifts off the ground.]
Int. Republic Cruiser—Living area
[The camera pans around the cruiser as we see Captain Panaka, Obi-Wan, Padme, and Queen AMIDALA have gathered in a comfy living area. Obi-Wan is leaning against a wall, mulling over the events of the day, the injured woman and his struggle with the destroyer haunt him. He feels he failed. Captain Panaka is happy to take a load off and is relaxing on the couch, feeling a great weight off his shoulders. Queen AMIDALA and Padme stare out the window at the Naboo landscape, knowing they are about to leave their home in its desperate hour. Cut to a shot of the Naboo landscape as it grows larger, and individual things become smaller and more indistinguishable.]
Int. Naboo Palace
[Nute digs through a chest of jewelry, silks, and other valuables. Rune looks out the window at the sky, looking concerned]
Nute: [Laughing] All these riches just waiting to fall into my hands. I told you this job would be one of the easiest we've ever had.
Rune: Hmm, I still don't like working with that man. I don't think he can be trusted.
Nute: Well, my friend, everything went as he said it would. And one way or another we have all the riches we were promised. Who cares about the means with results like these.
Rune: [he is not convinced] Hmm
S26: [enters] Sir! The Queen has escaped!
Rune: What? How?
S26: She was assisted by two Jedi.
Rune: Jedi? The Republic must have sent them. Scour the skies for a republic ship and shoot it down.
S26: But sir, the Queen could be—
Rune: That's a risk I'll take!
S26: Yes, sir.
Nute: If she gets away and our employer finds out ...
A superwide shot shows us the skyline of the city of Theeds as three Trade Federation ships rise into the sky and fly off.
Int. Republic Cruiser—cockpit
Qui-Gon: Set our course for Curiscant, captain.
Captain: Yes, sir [As Qui-Gon is an out to leave, there is a loud beep from the radar] Sir, it appears we're being pursued by three Federation ships
Qui-Gon: Then we'll have to outrun them! I'll inform the others.
[Wide shot of the two ships from the point of view of a Trade Federation ship, showing the distance between them and the Republic Cruiser as the Trade Federation ships start to fire]
Int. Republic Cruiser—Cockpitt
[The entire room shakes violently as the ship is hit. Captain Panaka, who is entering the cockpit, is thrown off balance and nearly falls.]
Captain Panaka: What was that?
Ric Olie: We've been hit, sir.
Captain Panaka: [Slipping into a co-pilots chair] I can see that! Evasive action! Power the shields!
Qui-Gon: [looking at a monitor] the shield generators damaged!
[Another violent shake as the ship is hit again]
Int. Republic Cruiser—living area
[Queen Amidala buries her face in Padme's shoulder in fear as the cabin shakes around them.]
Padme: What's that idiot doing in there, they're going to blast us out of the air!
[Obi-Wan rushes to the window and assess the distance between them and the Trade Federation ships. He is struck with an idea and hurries out of the room]
Padme: Where are you going?
Int. Republic Cruiser—cockpitt
Captain Panaka: Aren't there any weapons on this thing?
Qui-Gon: We're diplomats, why would we have weapons?
Captain Panaka: Well maybe in case someone's firing at you. Alright divert all remaining power to the engines! We have to make it out of the atmosphere.
Obi-Wan: [rushing in] Master! Come with me, I have an idea.
[Before Qui-Gon can even say anything, Obi-Wan runs back towards the living area. Qui-Gon is a bit taken aback but hurries after him.]
Captain Panaka: Prepare to jump to hyperdrive as soon as we leave the atmosphere!
Ric Olie: Hyperdrive? But sir, the navi-computer's been damaged! There's no telling how far we'll make or where we'll turn up.
Captain Pakard: When it comes to her highness's safety I take no prisoners, understand?
Ric Olie: Yes sir.
Int. Republic Cruiser—Living area
[Obi-Wan runs into the room a second before Qui-Gon and gestures rapidly for him to follow him to the window]
Qui-Gon: What's this about? What are you thinking, Padawan?
Obi-Wan: [A little out of breath] We're going to be the shields.
Qui-Gon: ... I like your thinking.
[As the Trade Federation ships fire their canons again, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan hold us their hands and use the force imitate a wall, which the missile explodes against. Then, with effort, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon disperse the explosion away from their ship, keeping them safe]
[Side-view long shot of the Republic Cruiser speeding along as the sky around them fades and then disappears suddenly, like it's been ripped away. Being replaced by outer space. A holding, straight shot of the cruiser as it momentarily floats against the void.]
Int. Republic Cruiser—living area
[Close up of Obi-Wan's face as he feels a great weight lift off his shoulders. Qui-Gon claps a hand on Obi-Wan's shoulder]
Qui-Gon: Good thinking, my Padawan.
Int. Republic Cruiser—cockpit
Ric Olie: We've left the atmosphere, Sir.
Captain Panaka: Jump to hyperdrive. Immediately!
[Shot of Captain manning the controls as he makes the jump. A shot from behind Panaka's chair as the stars blur and the jump is made. Shot of Panka as he watches.]
Captain Panaka: I can only hope we end up somewhere far away from here.
