We hold broken dreams
in scarred hands.
The pool of stars
that reflected in your eyes
has worn away.
Instead, nightmares and desperation
rip away at who you seemed to be,
at who you could've become.
You're no longer there
even as you sit next to me.
Unanswered questions swirl
in the space between us.
These monsters that haunt you,
the bruises you want to hide,
the fear that coils in your mind
was fabricated by lies and illusions
of a past you can't let go of.
I stand besides you in trying solace,
Muttering soft words and promises.
And your smiles, unsure and contrived,
Only reminds me of the fractured mask
you place to cover a jaded exterior.
