A/N: Sorry for many months of silence; I've been rewriting Death's Son. But I thought about how long I hadn't posted anything, and thought, I might as well post something.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Her heart hammered away in her chest, loud knocks that shook her ribcage and jammed her throat.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Seira gripped the door handle, her eyes wide and her muscles tense. Her knuckles turned white as she squeezed the cold metal. The edges of her vision were failing her, blurring in and out repetitively. There was silence on the other side of the door, unlike earlier, where the loud noise of something glass breaking had echoed throughout the house, shattering her heart along with it. Seira held a knife in her left hand, and the blade flashed at her hungrily. It reflected her eyes, wide and full with terror and fear of what lay on the other side of the door. The knife was only for protection, except she didn't exactly want to use it. Time seemed frozen, and for a moment she stood motionless by the door, her pulse throbbing harder than it ever had before.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

It was going to be fine. She would open the door to find her brother, sleeping peacefully, and then he would wake up and tell her to go to sleep. Everything was fine.
But then... why was she so scared?

Thud. Thud. Thud.

There was nothing else to do. She would have to open the door. Open the door, she ordered herself. Still, her body did not move. OPEN THE DOOR, Seira screamed internally, and all of her emotions churned as if in a blender, until she couldn't tell anything apart.
Breaking the moment, Seira wrenched back the door, which she had been gripping so long to. As if it were the only thing tying her back to the real world. And it was, at that point. She could have chosen to not open the door. She could have chosen to run. And when at that point, she wished she had. The door creaked open, light spilling into the room, to show what had happened.

Thud. Thud. Thu-

A scream cut through the sound of her beating heart, and she realised the shriek had forced its way out of her mouth. Her feet were paralysed to the spot, and she struggled to remove the imaginary bonds. An inhuman creature loomed over her. It was tall- impossibly so, and eyes bulged out of its head where its face should have been. They swirled in their sockets, staring, ever watching. A long slit above the thing's chin appeared to be a mouth, but some sort of dark substance was bubbling as it spilled out.

But Seira was more drawn to what was on the floor. A body of a boy. Just the body. The head had been forcefully wrenched off, and you could even see where the skin had been torn asunder if you looked close enough. A small speck of white bone was poking out amongst the gore, and the carpet was stained red.

The creature stretched its elongated hand- no, claw, and reached towards Seira. She could not move. The knife in her hand felt hot and slippery with her sweat. But what would a knife do against this thing? What would it do?! All around her, darkness closed in.

The sound of her heartbeat could be no longer heard.
