Liam was sound asleep when he heard his phone ring and decided to ignore it. He rolled over and went back to sleep. He let out a small sigh of relief when the phone stopped ringing. He had a big test in Econ tomorrow and he needed his sleep. It then started again. This time Liam woke up. He picked it up without looking at the screen.
"This had better be good," he said as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. All he heard on the other end was someone sobbing. He sat up straight now fully alert. "Kayden?"
"Liam…" his brother said his voice wavering.
"Kayden?" Liam asked again. "What's wrong?"
"It's Dad," Kayden said.
"What's wrong with Dad?" Liam asked his heart pounding in his chest. He did not like the sound of his younger brother's voice.
"No," Kayden said with a small hiccup. "I think he's trying to kill me."
"Wha..." Liam asked now completely confused. Their dad had a temper sure, but he couldn't picture him trying to hurt Kayden. That was until he heard shouting and the sound of something breaking.
"Oh god," Kayden said with another sob.
"Kayden, where are you?" Liam asked as he got off his bed and started looking for his car keys.
"In my bedroom closet," Kayden said his voice quiet. "I don't know what he's going to do if he finds me."
"Can you get out of the house and go to the neighbors?" Liam asked as he put on his coat.
"I don't think so," Kayden answered.
"Then stay there and call 911," Liam told him.
"Liam, I'm so scared," Kayden said with another sob.
"It's going to be alright," Liam said hoping to calm his brother some. "I'm on my way. Just hang in there. Now call 911. Can you do that for me?"
"Yeah," Kayden said with a sniff.
"I'll be there as soon as I can," Liam told him.
"Okay," Kayden said and then ended the phone call.
Liam's hands were shaking as he opened his bedroom door. He didn't know what was going on with his family, but he had never been so scared in his entire life. He walked into the living room and saw his two roommates sitting on the couch. Gabriel was watching a movie while Sean had a book in his lap. The three of them met in their freshmen year and found a cheap house to rent instead of living in the dorms.
"Is something wrong?" Sean asked. Sean was slightly shorter than him and Gabriel. He was slim with short, wavy, dark brown hair and bedroom brown eyes.
"Yeah, I need to go home. Something bad happened," Liam said as he made his way to the front door.
"What happened?" Gabriel his other roommate asked. Gabriel was the same height as him being six feet. He had straight dishwater blonde hair that he usually kept back in a ponytail and hazel eyes.
"I don't know," Liam said as he tried to keep his voice calm. "Kayden called me in a panic and…Dad he…"
"Do you want me to go with you?" Sean offered.
"No, I need you to explain to our Econ professor that I had a family emergency and see if he'll let me take the test at another time," Liam explained.
"Sure thing," Sean said with a small frown.
"What about me. I can go with you. I don't have any classes tomorrow," Gabriel said.
"It's alright," Liam said with a shake of his head.
"You do realize that you're shaking," Gabriel pointed out.
"I'll be fine. It's only a one-hour drive. I just…I need to go," Liam told them.
"I know, and you are in no shape to drive. Give me the keys," Gabriel said. Before Liam had time to protest Gabriel had ripped the keys right out of his hand. "Let's go."
"Be sure to call me when you get the chance," Sean told them.
"We will," Gabriel said as he led Liam from the house.
The next hour was the longest of Liam's life and all of these wild thoughts kept going through his head. The top one being why their dad would go after Kayden. He shook his head. He would worry about that later.
"You doing okay?" Gabriel asked him.
"No," Liam answered and chewed his bottom lip nervously. "I need to get home."
"I'll get you there," Gabriel reassured him.
Right before they even reached his house they saw bright flashing lights and Liam's heart plummeted. He knew that he told Kayden to call 911, but to see the result of that was jarring. There were two police cars and one ambulance. Not able to get in his driveway because of the ambulance Gabriel parked across the street. They quickly got out of the car and ran to his house. He saw his dad in one of the cop cars, his mom standing in the doorway of the house crying, and his little brother sitting in the back of the ambulance. He didn't know where to go first, but then Kayden looked up at him. The broken look in his baby brother's eyes decided it for him. Liam rushed over to him.
"Liam!" Kayden shouted as he ran over to him. Liam wrapped his arms around him; the top of Kayden's head just brushing his chin. His brother had always been on the small side.
"It's going to be okay," Liam told him. As an answer Kayden just sobbed into his chest.
"I'll go and check on your mom," Gabriel said as he patted him on the shoulder. Liam nodded in thanks.
After Gabriel had left Liam saw a police officer coming towards them. He tried to pull out of the death grip that Kayden had him in, but his brother wouldn't let go.
"Excuse me sir, but I need to know who you are," the officer asked him.
"I'm Kayden's older brother Liam Fletcher," Liam told the man. "Do you mind telling me what's going on."
"Wish I could, but we are getting conflicting stories. From the way things look it seems your father attacked your brother," the officer said and then sighed. "Social Services have been called because of it." Kayden gripped him tighter when he heard that.
"Was that really necessary?" Liam asked.
"Your brother is only a minor," the cop said. "We are also going to need to get a statement from him."
"But not before he's checked out at the hospital," a paramedic said as she glared at the cop. "He has a gash on his arm that needs stitches and there is a chance that he's in shock."
"Alright," Liam said this time able to get Kayden to let go of him. He then led it brother over to the ambulance.
"I don't want to go," Kayden said as he held onto his arm; Liam noticing for the first time the bloody bandage wrapped around his brother's left arm.
"Can I go with him?" Liam asked.
"I'm afraid not," the paramedic said.
"I'll follow you and meet you there," Liam said as he placed a kiss on top of Kayden's head. "It will be alright." His brother didn't say anything, but he nodded. Liam watched as they loaded his brother in the ambulance and drove away. His heart ached at the sight.
He looked over at his house noticing that the front door was closed and there was no sign of his mother; Gabriel was slowly making his way over to him looking troubled.
"How's Kayden?" Gabriel asked his hands in his pockets.
"Really upset. He barely spoke. Then they had to take him to the hospital to get stitches," Liam said as he tried to keep his voice from shaking. "How's my mom?"
"All she kept saying was that it was Kayden's fault," Gabriel told him. "She went back into the house after they drove off your dad. She said that she wanted nothing to do with Kayden."
"Damnit!" Liam shouted. "How can it be his fault. Kayden just turned fifteen. What could he have done to make Dad attack him and for Mom to turn her back on him?"
"I don't know," Gabriel with a shake of his head.
"We better go to the hospital," Liam said as he ran a hand through his hair. "I told him that we would follow."
"Let's go then," Gabriel said as he started to walk to the car. Liam glanced back at the house to see his mom looking out the window at him. Knowing that he needed to go he turned his back on her and headed to the car. He needed to take care of Kaden first.
